After my friend said this to me I asked him if it was ok if I payed a few guys to beat his dog to death and turn it into pet food. He got mad and said "no, and don't call him an 'it'." I said well a corpse is an 'it.' Then I asked if he would have a problem with me paying some guys to beat his neighbors' dogs to death instead. The conversation pretty much ended there because he wasn't in a humorous mood and other ppl showed up so I dropped it. My analogy did not come across well. How can I more delicately explain why his point (topic title) is BS?

Fist of all, that's a load of ****. People always care about if you're vegan unless they're overwhelmingly positive or blissfully ignorant. It's like they're personally offended. I think it's 'cause they know they're wrong on some level. In my experience, if you get confrontational then they get defensive. I guess they kind of need to know you're on their side.

It might be worth mentioning that pigs are smarter than dogs. You could also compare animal intelligence to baby intelligence.

I guess you kind of have to separate it using something with historical significance, for instance, slavery.

tbh you don't even have to get into morality when it comes to this one.

eating animal products > supporting animal agriculture ( = source of major CO2 emissions, leading cause of deforestation etc) > contributing to environment degradation big time

env degradation affects everyone. so yeah, it's normal to care about someone's actions that directly contribute to something that endangers your own future.

Funnily enough, eating animals or supporting the exploitation of animals in general, hardly qualifies as a personal choice.

First of all, it's usually the case that these actions are the result of upbringing and normalization; it's simply what is normal for people, and so they never chose anything in the first place and most are never really confronted about it, and so never really question it or consider the consequences of those actions.

Second of all, of course, are the far reaching effects that result from animal agriculture. The deforestation of rainforests, the significant contributions to climate change, the resulting waste that more often or not finds its way into our water, and so on.

As has been mentioned, this affects everyone, and our planet as a whole, negatively. It also greatly affects one's own health negatively with even children developing fatty streaks in their blood vessels earlier and earlier in life. Our oceans are currently predicted to be dead as early as 2048 if things continue as they are, and that alone is a huge issue that needs to be addressed soon.

Subjugating our fellow earthlings to this nonsense is just cruel, backwards, unnecessary, and stupid.
