I just read this novel. It is a prequel from Mai's perspective where she meets Makoto and Minoru then they participate in a game on an island said to be similar to the American show "Kid Nation".
Gives depth to the characters' backgrounds, and is interesting, but doesn't have that much to do with the concepts of Perfect Crimes. Also the three members of PCP seemed to be more like equals in what we saw in Bakuman, but here Makoto is much smarter than the others.
The rival character Akechi is also in the story and participates in the game, but events depicted here and in his character background contradict what is known in the manga scenes depicted in Bakuman.
- It is mentioned he has a past history with Makoto, who is his intellectual rival.
- In the aforementioned island game, Makoto, Minoru and Mai participate under the team name PCP (Pretty Cute Pupies). There is no way he would not suspect the 3 were PCP committing Perfect Crimes later on.
