A topic often debated within the anime community, do you think the Japanese Subs or English Dubs are better? What are good examples of well made/poorly made English Dubs or Japanese Subs?

Japanese 'subs' or English Dubs?
Don't you mean Japanese dubs + sub or English dubs?

OT: I prefer the Japanese dubs, since Japan has some really talented voice actors. I still appreciate the work of English dub VAs though.

I usually prefer Japanese dub + English subs, but there are a few that I prefer the English dub. These include B gata H kei (because of the English writers' localization of the humor), Spice and Wolf (because in the Japanese dub, Holo sounds like a 5-year-old), Panty and Stocking (the characters just seem to fit better with English voices), and Highschool DxD (because Jamie Marchi's voice acting makes my ovaries explode). Other than those few I prefer Japanese voice acting. C:

If it has an English dub I'll watch it that way, but if it's only subbed and it really interests me then I'll go with the sub. In short, I like both.

I'm a purist about this topic... if it's anime it has to be subbed. In English preferably! If it's a english spoken movie or series it has to be in English.
Although there are good anime dubs out there, I'm sure... I'm a sucker for original languages on the series I watch.

A good example to justify my fobia with dubs although really old since I avoid anime dubs like the plague... would be the Dubbed version of Excel Saga! Imagine a really really fast speaking japanese voice actress like Kotono Mitsuishi being dubbed by an amateur voice actress who doesn't really fit with the MC's personality. It's an abomination ^^;

I personally prefer Japaneses dub+English sub when watching anime.

-When you watch it in Japaneses dub+English sub, I feel like you can kind of improving your reading in English (that's me... I don't read books but don't mind reading the English sub) and at the same time, you can learn a little bit Japaneses from it.

-And when an anime is English dub, I find that a lot of times the voices from voice actor does not fit well with the characters (ex: Fairy Tail, I feel like the English voice for Happy is way too high and Levy's voice sounded like a very mature women that would not fit her character...)

I really appreciate the English dub tho bc it's really fun when you watch Japaneses dub then English dub and compare them ^-^

Same as most of other people, I prefer Jap dub+(not english though) polish sub. Although there are few exceptions like shaman king and ghibli movies.

I definitely appreciate a good English dub, but part of why I like anime is because I'm interested in Japan, and the language is so pretty to me.
Also, when they English dub it, they change the script to fit the English language better, so things can get lost in translation if you're watching a more slice-of-life series.

In short, I almost always prefer sub.

I prefer Japanese dub, English Subs. But there are those anime that I started watching with English Dubs (for various reasons) and so I stick to it because I don't like changing in the middle of the series

I just wrote a long answer on Quora on "Why people hate dubbed anime?"

I don't think it'd make much sense to retype or copy. So, here is the link -

For me it depends, lately I'll immediately go to the Japanese dub before English not necessarily because I prefer the Japanese but because the odds of it being a good dub are higher than the other way around. However there are times where I prefer the English to the Japaneses.
Cowboy Bebop & Black Lagoon are two big examples where I prefer the English over the Japanese. I also prefer FMA and Inuyasha in English as well but that's mostly due to hearing the English first because of Adult Swim.

Personally, I think Japanese subs are better. Dubs try to American-ise an original work and it just doesn't go well with anime. A good example of a good dub (That's well known) is Death Note. In the English dub for Death Note, a lot of the lines are kept similar to the original, and even the Kira laugh sounds amazing xD A good example of a bad dub (Also well known) is Mirai Nikki. The main characters, Amano Yukiteru and Gasai Yuno, are supposed to be middle schoolers, so about 14. But both sound as if they're 30! xD
In my opinion, subs are better, by far. It's only the odd dub that actually sounds good.

I usually watch sub but when it comes to shows like Black Butler where its set in Victorian England I'll watch it dubbed just cause it just adds more to it for me, I dunno.

I prefer subbed usually, with the exception of Studio Ghibli movies. and Kill la Kill dubbed is great too. One bad example that I can think of is Great Teacher Onizuka, that anime dubbed is so bad, it sounds like Dora the Explorer or some kids cartoon show like that.

Subs. i much prefer the japanese voice actors. however, the dub for Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind was very good and featured some voice actors i really like, same with Whisper of the Heart. but for like Zankyou no Terror the dub was really offputting, the actors voices were really annoyiing. same with gary in pokemon. i hate his voice.

I honestly like dub and sub equally. Some anime I watch in sub, some I watch in dub. Bottom line is that if the voice acting is good, it's good. That goes for both versions.

I prefer English sub ten times more than English dub, but I still watch English dub in rare occasions.
