Damn, just when I thought things may be going in the right path...an imminent tragedy about to happen. I sure hope this doesn't end up in an accident.
I was obviously too idealistic last chapter. Even the dense and idealistic Tatsuhiko knew it was too late for Hideyoshi to face the consequences and for things to get better. Just like it was for Ageha. It was too late for both of them. What the actual hell. At least last arc had a somewhat happy ending. Everything involved in this one turned to shit. Tatsuhiko's day has been awful, from Ageha and the stabbing to the brutalization of the club to this meeting with Hideyoshi.
Hideyoshi was an odd character, I didn't know if I'd like him, but from this single confrontation I grew to really appreciate him. His admiration for Tatsuhiko turned into envy and all he wanted was his resolve, his body, his strength. In his life he had no strength, he had nothing, he was abandoned by all, he learned not to trust people. So, for him to pursue power in this world, to use Tatsuhiko as a personal icon of strength he felt he could climb that. You could see in little moments the 'real' Hideyoshi come out but it was after he was beaten, and his hair was messy, that his eyes were nothing more than sad, confused, introspective, and moved. He was saved yet again by Tatsuhiko, even through all of the awful things Hideyoshi did to him, even though he was claimed to have done EVIL and that he deserved the consequences of his actions. Tatsuhiko had sympathy for Hideyoshi and among all else he didn't want anymore cruelty to happen. He knows this little brat and he knows where he's coming from, he's a sad little kid in his heart fighting to stay on top.
But like we saw he had a relationship with Yousuke, and here Tatsuhiko showed him that someone will look out for him in this world even though he's done such awful things. He cried, it definitely moved him. But one instance like that or a small friendship with Yousuke isn't enough to change how someone rationalizes their existence, so upon reflection he decided that it's not enough. That he only knows one way to live, he's not strong enough to leap the gap like Tatsuhiko did. So, he fixes his hair and his 'real self' vanishes. Hideyoshi is human, he cannot be saved just like that, just like how Ageha couldn't be. And in the brief moments he shows his incredibly human reluctance to change we see a man in a hood emerging in the crowd. I knew it was going to happen as I saw him but it still killed my heart. As soon as we saw a little hope in Hideyoshi and the foreshadowing that he was still going to play an antagonizing role, he gets pushed, maybe by someone else involved in the foreign drug source.
I guess I was so sure the mangaka couldn't just kill him like that, but there's no way he's living, right? And after such horrible pointless things happened to the club, to Ageha, and now to Hideyoshi, this arc has ended so meaninglessly. Even Tatsuhiko broke. After such a sight, after so much cruelty, he had enough, he didn't want to end it with one more sad death. One more hopeless case of futility. But even that wasn't enough. His line "this is too much for me today..." got to me. He's being haunted by his failure. Then in an angry sadness he beat an old classmate of his to near death, setting him up to be taken to the yakuza and killed. It was like, he saw the 'real Hideyoshi' deep down and he just wanted to salvage one person today, to not continue with the horrors the day had for him.
I thought the last arc was great but this, from the scout battle until now established and built up a villain from nothing and made him sympathetic, and to me likable through all his disgusting actions. It introduced a Ageha and pushed Tatsuhiko to new lows. It put peoples lives in his hands and refused to let him save a single one. It was definitely emotionally powerful and the drug plotline(which I have to assume will be ongoing) was interesting, it even showed our main characters being absolute monsters crushing those who oppose them without mercy. To further all this we got an explicit look on the morality of what Tatsuhiko and Burst is doing. It was powerful and even though I liked the succinctness of the first arc ending with Mako saving Tatsuhiko, this one blew my expectations out of the water. This kind of nihilistic, futile sadness is my weakness. I have never been made this sad from a manga before! I feel so much for my baby Tatsuhiko and this horrible world he exists in.
Like he put it. It's all over but our head is filled with what happened tonight. Or at least mine is.
I'm really glad that Hideyoshi got that kindness that he doubted in the end. He had to wonder why Tatsuhiko cared about Ageha. Well, somehow, he believes in you too. It may have ended poorly but there was a happy moment in there. One that shook Hideyoshi, which makes his moment of realization that he's about to die hurt so much more. Those final pages are burned into my head..
And now with the Yokohama knowledge that it was almost certainly Yousuke who pushed him it hits even harder. There's still immense mystery around it, but with the final translated chapter tying all the way back and asking "why did you kill Hideyoshi", well, it's a shame it stopped right there!!! How Hayama convinced him is curious. Hayama has been responsible for the death of two people and the psychological destruction of another, huh?
Also, when I first read this, the death of Hideyoshi felt like pure cruel, nihilism. And, while that is not completely untrue, like with most of these kinds of horrendous moments, thematically it's a different story. His death is always sad, the ripping away of his opportunity to grow hurts. But it was enough to challenge Tatsuhiko and teach him how to get past the cold and unfair challenges life can throw at you. As with most of what's in this manga, it can be unfair, but how we deal with that unfairness and grow is what matters. Facing the failure to save a friend and coming out of it a better person goes a long way for Tatsuhiko's way.
