So, I just watched episode 9, and I really think this show is starting to go above and beyond what I expected it to be...I think it should be at least in the low 8s. Why is it a FRIGGIN 7.18?!

Sure, I'm really enjoying this show and would rate it higher than that, but for some reason different people have different opinions. And it's not even really a low score.

I think it has to do with the type of humor this anime has. In order to understand this humor you basically need to not only understand satire, but also appreciate it as humorous... otherwise people just see characters that over react in the most exaggerated way possible.

Also, to add some encouragement, the score may go up after the dub is done since its slightly easier to catch onto satire when you can hear the voice fluctuations (plus I think the dub is actually super good and I usually hate dubs)

I agree with you my dear friend. In my eyes Nanbaka is something new colorful and different.

This is not satire. This is a cheap parody at best. Regardless of whether you like the humour or not - note, I didn't laugh a single time in 12 episodes and think it's absolutely boring - they add a lot of content that doesn't seem to fit at all. At first they pretended to be just a comedy and I was asking myself how they would fill 13 episodes. Then they switched to random events. More recently they did tons of backround story, flashbacks etc. I don't really know why I should care about any of that stuff if at the same time the show suggests I shouldn't take it serious.

Comedy wasn't decent (at least for me) and the drama felt awkward and it felt that they just added it without that much thought; it felt really random.

Satire is defined as the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.
I'm pretty sure this anime is a satire on most anime tropes and stereotypes, but to each their own. I won't debate it any further than this cause I'm lazy :P.

I have marked the important part for you. ;) That's why it is a parody. It plays on anime specific tropes but doesn't provide any subtext or play on political, social or environmental issues.

It is insanely overrated. Watched few episodes, and it is unbelievably bad. No story, boring unlikable characters, comedy is not funny at all.

Prison school is 10x times better than this garbage

Yep,
Prison School is a comedy but Nanbaka throws in these really chitty serious moments. Take only best funny moments from Nanbaka, then it would deserve the rating it has right now.

As someone who dropped the show around where you are, maybe my point of view can explain why.
First of all, comedy is highly subjective and since it is a comedy for most of the beginning, finding it unfunny means a drop and a low score.
Getting closer to my problems, the shift to a more serious tone is what made me drop it. For an anime to shift tones mid-arc is going to make some people who came to it because of the comedy to drop it.
The random ninja episode in the middle of the arc, mid-fight doesn't help ethier. It may have been in the manga like that, but the anime can deviate and change things to make it flow better, see Jojo Part 4 to see an example of it.

While I gave this anime an 8, I think it should be somewhere between a 7.5 and an 8. Not amazing, but certainly better than fanservicey shows like Keijo!!! and yes, even Prison School.

I LOVE it when a comedy anime goes from funny to serious...take Gintama for example (I see that it's in your favorites, as well as mine). Adding seriousness to a gag manga/anime gives it meaning, right??? Of course, comedy-wise, this pales in comparison to Gintama XD

I have high hopes on Nanbaka when it was announced that Shinji Takamatsu was the one directing the series but I guess I expect too much. The plot on the second half was interesting though and I still looking forward on to the season 2 but the comedy was off It's not like what he has done on Sakamoto desu ga, Nichibros and Gintama. It's not that bad nor good either a 7 is the highest that i can give.

I never enjoyed the comedy. It felt too bright and random and wacky. They started things off at this wild pace, never establishing a baseline of expectation to later betray. Setup is a big part of comedy and I think Nanbaka often ignored the setup. They even punctuated the dramatic bits with "okay we're going back to lighthearted comedy now" which kills any gag potential they had finally built up.

Hey, if you enjoyed it that's fine. Everyone needs an underrated show in their life.

To each their own. I came for a gag anime and then it decided to change that.
If I had to say why it didn't work like Gintama for me:
The serious parts focused on my least favourite character. Juugo to me felt like an edgelord who tried too hard to be cool. His defining characteristic is that he is naturally good at escaping and doesn't really have a funny quirk like the other 3.
The serious also came mid-arc, at least with Gintama you get the serious feeling at the beginning of an arc. Nanbaka was like G Gundam references one moment then right after Juugo is in a life or death struggle with crazy arm spike powers.
Gintama also had single serious episodes/mini-arcs before a full-blown arc, Nanbaka was like 99% comedy (the 1% was the tiny bit of foreshadowing in the beginning) then the serious Juugo story. In fact, if the ninja's backstory episode was before the tournament, not only would it flow better, give Juugo some characterism (not right before it was relevant) but it would show Nanbaka as not 100% comedy which would make the transition smoother.

Idk I enjoyed this show....but I don't know if I would give it an 8.

I think a 7 is actually pretty accurate. Its an enjoyable show...with some amusing characters. Also Nico is fucking adorable as hell. With that said...the show seams to lack direction. Its a comedy one minute, action the next, and sometimes it feels more like a drama. It does all three very well, but isn't great at any of them either.

Lets see what they do with the second season though. For now I'm giving it a 7.

I think it's a matter of not getting what you expect. The first couple of episodes delivered pretty much exactly what I thought the series would be and I rated them accordingly. I was looking for a silly goofy gag anime and that's exactly what I got. Then they decided to switch gears and implemented (what I consider to be) a fairly half-assed plot. Since then it has bounced back and forth from gag anime to fighting/martial arts anime to serious/seinen anime. It can't really decide what niche it wants to fall into and I know that is what turned me off to it. If it had picked one style and stuck with it I think it would have worked. But it was just too fragmented to really be fulfilling. Don't get me wrong...it wasn't terrible. But I only scored it a 6/10 for the reasons I just listed.

I didn't like the serious parts and the plot wasn't the best, if it had stayed on the gags and comedy I would've agreed with you.

You basically answered your own question. You like it a lot and others don't, therefore the rating is as it is. Simple as that.
You're a louse, Roger Smith. - R. Dorothy Wayneright

Well, I'm back on Gintama, and now that I've been re-introduced to some QUALITY anime, I think this show has an appropriate rating. Still, I'm not going to drop it, since it has its entertaining moments.

I guess it got what it deserves. I started watching this anime as a comedy genre. But it got into some kind of story that doesn't match with it. But it was okay to kill some time though.
