THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Seems they are adapting from chapter 39 with Rei and Shimada. I really like the character chemistry between the two and the anime captured the magic of their characters pretty well. The way they also talk about the mejin (Soya) was interesting with the hare-turtle story analogy by Shimada.

The episode had a good atmospheric feel and nice usage of soundtrack imo. Good stuff.

I think Shimada has the same illness Nikado has.

Something with these drawings are insane man! Who is doing all these detailed drawings. This weeks episode had some great highlights visually. I am extremely pleased with this.

3 more episodes left I believe i will give this series a 9/10.

Shimada's story: the episode. Can he manage even one win over silver-haired Rei, ailing as he is? I doubt it, but we'll see.

Sigh, yet another episode with little to in this case no screen time for the sisters. :( I get that Rei is the mc and it's his story, I really do, but they've been sorely missed in the second half of this series. :(

Maybe it's just me who WANTS to see it like this, but is Rei seeing Shimada as a new father figure? Especially that line at the beginning of the episode implied this. Really like the two together.

SHAFT is truly ramping it up with visual keys.

There it is, a comparison between Rei and Souya. Can't wait to see more of Souya, we could see here once again in one little scene how likable this man seems to be, helping out Shimada (and i'm pretty sure that he came to him seeing how unwell he felt)

Good episode as always.

Lot of great visuals this episode, Shaft on fire. xD
Shimada's backstory was great, the guy really worked hard to make it to where he is today.

I really like how Rei and Shimada's relationship is growing, It's nice to see that Rei has a lot of respect for him, he's even caring for him.

I hope Shimada can win at least one game. :(
Interested in learning more about Souya, interesting to note that Shimada think Souya and Rei have similar viewpoints on things.

Lots of focus on Shimada this episode, and that definitely made it one of the stronger episodes in recent weeks. It's good to see his and Rei's relationship growing in the way that it is, but it's also interesting how Shimada compares Rei to Souya. Of course, I doubt that'll be enough for him to be able to win (not least because of stomach pains), but I'd really like to see him win at least one match against Souya. I'm also eager to see more of Souya himself, cos the comparison to Rei makes me wonder about his own circumstances.

Nice to know more about Shimada. He's trying his best to make his elders proud. The visuals was good. His chemistry with Rei was great. It's very nice of Rei to take care of him. Those stomach pains looks painful. I hope Shimada wins his match.

A lot of focus on Shimada this week, with his backstory as well as him dealing with stomach pain. I felt really bad for him in this episode, he didn't look good at all. It was nice to see more interaction between him and Rei.

Again, another really good episode. This show just brings it week after week. Loved seeing Rei and Shimada grow closer and help each other improve before the big match--hoping that Shimada can pull out a win. His flashback at the beginning of the episode was really well-handled and does a really good job of contextualizing what exactly is on the line when he says he wants to avoid straight losses.

5/5 -- still the best show of this season and last.

He sure is. I have been in love with him since he first made the scene. Sexy voice ... smooth and languid and just damn sexy. He may be sickly but he's a long, lean sexy man machine.

He needs the love of a good woman who will keep the fires burning, warm his bed at night or any time of the day. Whatever he wants! I will gladly volunteer. He needs to made love to and often, with home cooked meals, tummy rubs, and hugs and smooches galore.

I want to love him lots too up while he whispers naughty things into my ear. <3

Loved the episode. Amazing visuals as well :D

Shimada, what a guy. Put in a lot of hard work to get where he is today with him struggling with his stomach pains. Great backstory overall. I do hope he gets atleast one win against Souya. Feel bad for him :( Felt even more bad when the Chairman completely put him down. xD That guy is savage as fuck hahah xDD

Only 3 more episodes left. Nooooooo. I want moreee. I love this show so much T_T

I liked Shimada since the first time he appeared, but the show has really made me like him a lot, and his backstory only made it better. The guy sure deserves respect, going from a kid who grow in a rural area to a shogi prodigy through hard work and perseverance. I'm totally rooting for him.
However, that stomach pain make me worried about him. If he had it since he was 10, that's something big :(
I also liked how much Rei cares about him, like if he was an actual relative of him. And to think he was the same guy who rekted him hard five episodes ago...

Souya has remained very mysterious through the series, I actually want to know more about him (although with only three episodes left, I really doubt we are going to see something of him for the moment).
On an unrelated note, the animation in the scene when Shimada mentions that, despite how hard he tried he could never reach Souya was really stunning.

The president of the shogi association is a total savage, lmao. And poor Smith, his cat NTR'd him :(

Shimada's past was very fascinating for me. Considering that he was living in the countryside where the population was mostly elderly people and few kids his age, Shogi was something fresh from his daily routine.

With hard work and such kind support from his friends and the elderly, he climbed the ranking ladder to where he is today. This has given another insight as to why he wants to play in his hometown so badly, to show his supporters back home just how far he has come from when he first started out playing Shogi.

However for that dream to happen, he needs to win against Souya twice in a row and with his stomach pains causing him problems, it's going to be a even harder hurdle for Shimada to jump over. I hope he can finally win against Souya this time! =D

Also, great job to SHAFT for their excellent visuals and soundtrack in this episode. They really did outdo themselves for this episode. =)

It sucks to be Smith though. It sounds like his cat was warming up to its caretaker more than it ever did to him! XD

Another great episode. Even if it was just a prelude to Shimada's big match. As long as they actually show the match next time, I'm okay with it. Rei and Shimada's relationship is pretty interesting. Hell, with all the development he's gotten in the last few episodes just Shimada by himself is pretty interesting. His opening autobiographical narration was spell binding. And I liked his reasoning for wanting to practice with Kiriyama. It seems pretty obvious that Soya is at least supposed to represent a possible future for Rei. I did think how Kiriyama ended up at the Lion King match was kind of under explained. As was the absence of Nikaidou who's mostly just doted on Shimada for the past few episodes. Still another gripping and slickly animated episode. Can't wait for the next. Sad we're so near the end though.

I think this episode made me really love Shimada, even more than I already did :P Coming from a small village and being encouraged by the elderly people there, he joins the big leagues only to find that he's a big fish in a small pond. What I really admire about him is that even though Souya is so far ahead of him, he still has the strength and determination to keep on improving. Just taking practicing when he's clearly not feeling well - his stomach problems sound so painful! :( I think this has helped Rei a lot too, having someone like that to look up to and not to mention him sort of thinking like Souya. Seeing Rei be so caring was really nice to watch. I really like their relationship :') I really want Shimada to pull out a win here but I really don't know if he can given his circumstances ... ah man! I don't want this show to end but there are only 3 episodes left so I guess probably they won't get to all 7 games :( Looking forward to the fourth match!

fun to hear Shimada's small town backstory. Stomachaches suck.
Rei's growth been quite a thing. He's been aware he was selfish, only worrying about his troubles, until Nikaido showed him maturity, then attitude/dealing with sister changed gradually, and now he's taking care of Shimada like a mother.

And now the arc in Kyoto begins for the Lion competition.

I like this episode in that in addition to focusing on the buildup for the match also looks at the background story for the two sides as well. The town where Shimada grew up in sure was desolate. So thats how he was introduced to Shogi eh. When compared to the likes of games, manga's and books Shogi can last for much longer. Its no wonder that Shogi captivated Shimada so much. His skill sure developed quickly after only learning about it though. To be able to beat adults at just second grade is pretty impressive. From a small town past time to playing in the big city thats pretty impressive growth. But to be able to go to the big city Shimada really had to work hard taking several jobs day and night to gather the funds needed. But as a result he developed problems with his stomach eh. Compared to what he seen in the village i guess Tokyo would be different in that the players here would have a higher degree in skill than what Shimada had seen back in the village. Its nice that the people of his village though continue to support him though. Apart from wanting to prove himself Shimada also didn't want to fail because of the faith the people of the village had in him. To get so far yet also develop problems with the stomach though.

Still its impressive how far Shimada has gotten and how he got into Shogi as well.
Its nice to see Rei taking care of Shimada though. Hmm so Rei still remembers his birth parents fondly eh. He must miss them a lot. Lol realizing that your move could be countered like that when he's asleep lol thats sure to stop you from sleeping again that night. Thats exactly the reason why its a good idea for him to not think of anything and get some true rest though. But lol its just like Shimada to not rest and instead focus on on practicing eh. Since Rei is a c rank and Shimada is a a rank i do wonder whether Shimada learns anything in their matches. But i would say that he does because each person in Shogi and indeed in any other game plays differently to each other and have different approaches to deal with varying situations. So Shimada does also learn from Rei as well even if Rei is lower than him in rank. Hmm Shimada see's himself as a tortoise while Souya is a bird eh. Souya sounds like a true master in that he never lets down his guard and keeps practicing while also being calm and collected during matches instead of being overconfident. Still despite Souya's skill being obviously ahead of you its nice to see Shimada not giving up and still try his best in their matches. Its nice to see Rei actually take care of Shimada though. Seeing that banner at the station of his home village though really tells you how much faith they have of you and in turn motivate you to fight ever harder. Even in that state Shimada still insists in practicing eh. Thats some determination. Lol the chairmen is as eccentric as ever eh. Lol Rei being told he acts like a mother. Souya seems rather unreliable in tournaments lol. Shimada really needs to learn to take care of himself though. But duty is far more important i guess. Man the chairmen can be real inconsiderate eh. Smith and his cat though are always so funny. This should be a interesting match.

God this is a good anime. It's really amazing that the writing took this route, which is to have the protagonist grow from becoming close with and watching someone play shogi, rather than having him work at it himself. Very interesting, because it also shows how he interacts in relationships and how it improves. This anime isnt really about how good he is at shogi, and that's what I really like about it.

Smith's cat problems were really funny.

Shimada is such a complicated character. I really respect his motivations for wanting to be a Meijin to bring pride to the village and his fears of Souya, someone admittedly leagues beyond what his skill level will ever be at yet is the same age as himself. The relationship that is getting developed between him and Rei is really wholesome too, which I am enjoying. I hope he's able to win this match.

Rei and Shimada's relationship really feels like one that a master and student has, even though Rei is much more similiar to Souya

Shimada has come a long way with hard work alone, trying to have at least one match at his hometown against Souya who he knows is in a whole different realm even though they are the same age

How old is Shimada? He looks 50 yrs old lol Souya is so cool! He doesn't get bored if he's already too good in shogi?
