So I recently finished the Planetes anime and I loved it!... But for some reason I felt like it ended too soon and parts of the story where left out. So i just started reading the manga and wow!..... its wayyy deeper. We get to see more layers Hatchimaki internal struggle and we also get to see Tanabes backstory and her childhood. We also get to see more character development of the Jupiter team and what happens when they leave earth....Heck, Hatchimaki even grows facial hair in the manga!

I highly recommend reading the manga if you haven't yet. It really flushes things out and its alot darker themed

I think that it's good to know both versions, since both have their strong points, for example Tanabe and Hachimaki relation development is better displayed in the anime and anime has more interesting characters. I agree that manga is better, but actually they are two different (but alike) stories which complement themselves.
