I don't think this counts since they don't get this dark. Even in the case of strike witches and girls und panzer.

I think what it reminds me most of is Tim Burton's Batman and Robin. Think about it. You've got an over-the-top reimagining of famous city, and a group of shadow heroes who live double lives and keep the peace under the cover of darkness. Why Batman and Robin speciically? Because, like that move, Princess Principal is so full of over-the-top cheese that I think it's somewhere on the So-Bad-It's-Good spectrum

Batman & Robin was Joel Schumacher though, Tim Burton only directed the first 2 (Batman and Batman Returns), but I get the point. The super gadgets (especially Ange's) is definitely something of a powerless (but sticking rich) superhero like Batman, and the multiple tiers of highways of steampunk London has some reminiscence of Gotham, at least of the 90's Batman's of Gotham.

But I can't believe no one has mentioned the obvious: James Bond. He also has super gadgets, a recurring supervillain - in this case, the Duke of Normandy -, a relationship with a woman seemingly (or not) on the enemy's side - Ange and the Princess's relationship -, and the license to kill. Not to mention James Bond is as British as he gets.

I should mention James bond, but the story here is quite good. Glad to see everyone actually get flush out. I don't think it is over the top chessy, but moreso these girls are really smooth.

Cute spy girls doing cute spy things.
Because anything that says cute is nearly in a hail gunfire from pissed off enemy soldiers.

Reminds me of joker game which was equally as boring except this has cute girls instead of bishies.
From what I know that show had other problems and kind of didn't seem to get the spy genre. This show gets it. It gets it very well.

It reminded me of H.G. Wells (because the anime is a "cavorite-punk") and far away from La Brigade Chimérique (a french "radium-punk" comic series and role-playing game).

@MasterHavik "didn't get the spy genre"
Really? I doubt it.
But yes, it had a BIG problem: by compressing a whole short story in each single episode (usually) because it was based on anthology novels, it relied heavily (almost every episode actually) on a character hired to narrate a good deal of events taking place during the episode but skipped (not shown).
Though, for many people, it was terrible because it lacked a red thread/line tying together all episodes. I must say that the "lack" of a shared intrigue wasn't detrimental, it was supposed to be like this from the beginning when they announced wich novels of the trilogy would be adapted.
edit @MasterHavik : My bad, I didn't understand. ^^'

@gomennasai In my mind, Cobra is so close to James Bond that I couldn't even imagine that. But now, I guess it can be worked out.

Sora No Woto gets a lot darker than this show ever did, and is overall a lot better.
