Watched this because of Crunchyroll passport. Should I stick with it or switch to the original?

Basically, as the title says: I watched this because of the Crunchyroll passport thing and liked it. However, after looking at screenshots of the original, I much prefer the art style. Should I switch and watch that one first? OR, should I watch this first, since I won't have high expectations set by the original, and then watch the original after? Thoughts?

You can watch the one that appeal to you the most. But since you liked the new version, you could finish this first and then watch the older version. Both versions are good, but they each have their own value which make them enjoyable.

Honestly both of them are good in their own accord (I don't get the hate for the remake since while it isn't as great compared to the original. It's still good imo), so you choose whatever you want to go, it doesn't change much honestly if you pick the original or the remake.

when was the last time you watched the 2003 series?

they are barely comparable

this series is flat talking heads and looks like SAO and is completely incoherent tonally because the episodes were decided by a poll

the 2003 series is dark and eerie and existential with crazy sound design and interesting cinematography and it has an actual kind of narrative

2015. Pretty much 2 years ago. And my memory is rather fresh with the show.

You do realize that the show is pretty much different in terms of tone because of the staff right? You can't really replicate that very easily.

I think its still good because it still brings that interesting narrative that I liked about the original, and it doesn't have to replicate or be as equal as the original... because to be honest, that's just being a blatant copy rather than the director's way of doing things. :T

But of course, this is just a silly opinion of mine.

I mean the issue is that the new series doesn't really... have directing

It's just a bunch of really basic storyboards scripted to the novel verbatim with no interesting audiovisual choices. it would be one thing if they were like uhhhh Gunbuster and Diebuster where they're both great but are completely different visions. But this feels like trading in a car for a gokart

Tbh I don't think it looks basic. I don't think its great, don't get me wrong. Visuals are good in itself but it needs some working (besides you can't really adapt an style from the past either).

This isn't bad by any means honestly though. I think both shows have their strengths and downs. Since the original had its downs as well (I remembered that back when I watched it I wasn't used to the pacing in the beginning, but then I got used to it later on).

From a non-biased point of view both are worth watching, although it would probably make sense to watch the 2003 ones first since you can finish all episodes in one go rather than waiting.

From what I've watched so far (only the early episodes of each season), the story quality is pretty much the same, but the animation quality and overall "vibe" is different.

2003 Has a eerie feel, mainly due to the old washed-out animation. Kino seems slightly more cutesy and softer. 2017 Has cleaner, brighter visuals and a more dour Kino.

Having no nostalgic attachment to the series I'm rather perplexed by the aggressive opinions and derogatory comments by watchers of the old series. It's excessive and unwarranted. Probably scaring off quite a few interested viewers too.

Finish the new one first, then the old one. Both had different tone and vision. Especially, when it comes to the main character's personality.

I'm not really trying to debate quality, and honestly, I can almost guarantee I'll prefer the original. I'm just thinking - should I watch the one I know I'll like more first to get the better experience, or should I watch this one first so it won't be ruined by high expectations?

I'd say the new one first, so you can understand Kino's personality better rather than watching 2003 first and being disillusioned when watching the 2017 with kino being selfish pragmatist instead of pacifist neutral observer (like majority of 2003 fan who never touched the LN).

Of course you can watch the 2003 first so long you don't forget that Kino isn't as nice as the 2003 anime paint her to be.
