I feel like this manga could've been great if the story was spread over 3 volumes:
Volume 1: Tomoi feels out of place in Japan, and is planning to leave the country for good. Tomoi's family is furious, as they planned a marriage for him, but he refuses and tells them it's his life to go about. As well, his friend doesn't want him to leave because of their strong bond. Tomoi tests the waters by stating he's gay. Thus, he flirts with his friend to make him stand up for himself and get his woman, giving Tomoi the chance to escape to America.
Volume 2:Now in NYC working as a doctor, he has a quick fling with Rickert, who breaks off with him due to the AIDs scare (foreshadowing the disease). Rickert goes back to Germany like in the book. Gets with Marvin, emotional bond strengthens, and ending his eventual demise like in the story. Heartbroken, he signs himself to be stationed in Pakistan, uncaring for his own life.
Volume 3:Story starts in Pakistan, and Tomoi eventually strengthens his bond with the locals, decides to cut off from America and head to Afghanistan illegally like in the manga. Meets Smith and Adel, and a father-daughter grows. Tomoi doesn't care about his life anymore, but Adel shows him importance of life like back in his old days with Marvin. Tomoi gets over his discomfort of woman (but he's still gay). Rest of the manga continues the same way the manga did.
If the events were structured a little bit differently, as well as giving several characters more panels dedicated to them (especially Marvin), this would've been even better. I felt the events unfolding were a bit disjointed, like when Tomoi went back to Japan in the beginning of this vol. Though the story is damn good, but could've worked about it better. Heck, if it was 2 volumes total like the instance here, one could combine the first 2 vol together, with the story in Japan only covering a ch or two (out of five ch). |
