Do I have to watch The Tatami Galaxy first if I want to watch The Night is Short, Walk on Girl?

I ended up downloading the movie but I only noticed it shares characters from The Tatami Galaxy. So do I have to watch the TV anime in order to understand the story of the movie?

No, you don't. It has some same characters, but you don't need to watch The Tatami Galaxy to understand it.

(But you should watch The tatami galaxy because it's really damn good)

I would still recommend watching The Tatami Galaxy first, there are many references scattered through the movie that might add a little extra. Getting used to Yuasa's style here might help as well.

while not required i'd say the viewing experience is greatly enhanced by having previously seen TTG.
