"If I watch Outlaw Star now, people are going to get on my case to watch shit like Tenchi Muyo."
~Pat, Super Best Friendcast ep. 22

What we're watching: the original 6-episode Tenchi Muyo OVA. It tells a complete story, at about the pace of a movie, and is probably the strongest part of the franchise. https://myanimelist.net/anime/539/Tenchi_Muyou_Ryououki
(Though it may not be my personal favorite part)

Where: It was on Crunchyroll, until their partnership with Funimation ended a couple of months ago. It's available on Funimation free+ads or with a paid subscription (in the regions they actually serve); otherwise, you know what to do. :P

EDIT: Change of plan; we will now be doing a weekly stream simulwatch. To be ready to watch, be sure to follow the instructions and install the script linked here: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1735564 (Cytube channel link is also there)

When: Scheduled time is Tuesdays around 7:25 PM EST (or Wednesday 12:25 AM GMT), after Wataten. If you plan to join for Tenchi then please let me know to wait for you.

Remaining schedule:

Episode 3 - January 15
Episode 4 - January 22
Episode 5 - January 29
Episode 6 - February 5

Why: I'd suggest watching the OP; it represents the show quite well.
https://youtu.be/ZSf8tO7QIDc?t=18 The reason why I still have a high opinion of Tenchi Muyo is its world. It's science fantasy, with fairly distinctive magic-tech and one gimmick in particular which may be unique in anime/manga. Overall, the most similar world/tech I've seen so far is probably Nanoha.

But Tenchi Muyo is most recognized as a ~notable historical artifact~ for being one of the first harem anime. Ironically MAL doesn't have the harem tag on the first OVA - earliest harem titles recognized by MAL: https://myanimelist.net/anime/genre/35/Harem?page=4

User Gorchestopher H writes here: "Technically the genre-defining Harem Anime/Manga is Tenchi Muyo." "Unlike Ranma 1/2 where [the MC is] technically 'engaged' to many girls, Tenchi is actually stuck in a house filled with women who basically vie for his favor. Tenchi Muyo took that final step to differentiate itself from an anime that happens to have a character that everyone likes, into a coined harem anime as we know them today."

It's like that;
and that's the way it is.
~Run-DMC

The harem aspect certainly drew me in when I was twelve and this was my first anime, but that "Wow, the girls actually want the guy in this show" appeal wore off after a few cour of catfights, even back then. Still, I am hoping to like some of the girls more this time, with their original voices. I watched Tenchi dubbed in 2000 and in 2009.

"Tenchi Muyo was the gateway drug to hentai for a lot of kids."

[No Need for] Another Guide to Tenchi Muyo
No exaggeration, this franchise is one of the most confusing I've seen. I'm not even sure how many separate timelines/universes there are, and I don't mean in a Dragon Ball sense; I mean with most there is no in-world connection between them at all. It's been rebooted over and over.

At time of posting, r/anime's Watch Order Wiki directs to this image chart with unnecessarily tiny text, but I'd like to redo and update it in text here, with links to each item. The main page of this club has a more detailed rundown, including plot synopses.

I'm writing the -ou as -o, because "Muyo" is the romanization I've been used to for two decades.

The first continuity, the "Kajishima Canon" (leftmost on the image chart), goes like this:

1. Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA series 1 (1992) https://myanimelist.net/anime/539/Tenchi_Muyou_Ryououki
+ Festival special (1993) https://myanimelist.net/anime/1146/Tenchi_Muyou_Ryououki__Omatsuri_Zenjitsu_no_Yoru

2. Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA series 2 (1994) https://myanimelist.net/anime/540/Tenchi_Muyou_Ryououki_2nd_Season

All of the above were released in the west under the shortened title, "Tenchi Muyo."

3. Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA series 3 (2003) https://myanimelist.net/anime/541/Tenchi_Muyou_Ryououki_3rd_Season
+ https://myanimelist.net/anime/1147/Tenchi_Muyou_Ryououki_3rd_Season__Tenchi_Seirou_naredo_Namitakashi
This was released in the west as "Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki," the Japanese title of the original OVA, causing much confusion; people to this day still sometimes try to start the series at the beginning, and accidentally start this instead.

OVA 3 is controversial and low-rated compared to the 90's originals, but it's still unanimously better than this:

4. Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA series 4 (2016) https://myanimelist.net/anime/31861/Tenchi_Muyou_Ryououki_4th_Season

Well, I'm not a fan of FLCL, but I'm pretty sure those sequels will have a lot of things happening in them. ii na
The climactic final episode of that went as follows:
nDroae said:
Episode outline:

• Women having committee meeting
• Women having committee meeting in bikinis
• Women having committee meeting naked
• Women having committee meeting in sleepwear

OVA 4's main purpose turned out to be to connect Tenchi Muyo OVAs 1-3 to two spinoff series set in the same continuity, which had come out years before and didn't really need or deserve any such setup in 2016.

5. Tenchi Muyo! GXP (2002) https://myanimelist.net/anime/1133/Tenchi_Muyou_GXP
Seems many didn't like this as much as I did. It has an all-new main cast, including a new main boy, making the "Tenchi Muyo" title false advertising (except in the sense that this spinoff literally has "no need for Tenchi," which is the most common translation of "Tenchi muyo"). It also has more ecchi than Tenchi Muyo ever did.

6. Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari / Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar (2009)
https://myanimelist.net/anime/5781/Isekai_no_Seikishi_Monogatari
Another all-new cast. Look at that 8.00 score, from many more people than the original Tenchi OVA; I think this must be the highest-rated Tenchi-related anime on MAL. I DIDN'T like it! ;P This was the first anime I ever picked up as it was coming out in Japan; however, I dropped it halfway through, and didn't finish it until 2015. Sometimes cited as an example of "an actually good isekai harem," but I found it boring. I'd much rather rewatch Smartphone than this - and I will. Can't stop me.

With the second continuity, "Negishi Continuity" in the image chart, I'm not at all convinced there is any connection betwen its parts, though that's the official position.

1. Tenchi Muyo (TV, 1995) https://myanimelist.net/anime/696/Tenchi_Muyou
Released in the west as Tenchi Universe. That's right; original OVA 3's English title was the same as OVA 1's Japanese title, while OVA 1's English title was the same as this TV version's Japanese title. It's a MESS I tell you. At least it's still not as bad as having three movies called "Halloween" and two called "Halloween II" all within the same language.

Tenchi Universe was my actual first anime, unless you count one episode of Superbook. It introduced my "first waifu," Kiyone, though I would also have been happy with a victory for Aeka/Ayeka, who was in the original OVA. The story is an extended adaptation of the first OVA series, with the same villain.

2. Tenchi Muyo! in Love (1996) https://myanimelist.net/anime/1006/Tenchi_Muyou_in_Love
3. Tenchi Muyo! in Love 2 (1999) https://myanimelist.net/anime/1144/Tenchi_Muyou_in_Love_2__Haruka_Naru_Omoi

As far as I'm concerned, these movies might as well be in their own universe, at least based on my one watch in 2010. And they definitely didn't make the impression of deserving the title "In Love!"

On the topic of movies, there's another one which came out between the two "In Love" movies, but is unrelated to either. Instead, it's an alternate sequel to the original OVA series. And it's pretty bad.

Tenchi Muyo! Midsummer's Eve (1997) https://myanimelist.net/anime/1101/Tenchi_Muyou_Manatsu_no_Eve
Released in the west as "Tenchi the Movie 2: The Daughter of Darkness." But then the actual Tenchi Muyo! in Love 2 came out, and was renamed "Tenchi Muyo Movie 3: Tenchi Forever."

Midsummer's Eve does have an amazing soundtrack by Ko Otani, composer of Shadow of the Colossus, Haibane Renmei, and Gundam Wing: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1744263

The third continuity (not counting the movies) is a single 2-cour TV series:

Shin Tenchi Muyo (1997) https://myanimelist.net/anime/538/Shin_Tenchi_Muyou
Released in the west as Tenchi in Tokyo, this was my first major overall disappointment in anime; this turned out to be the majority view. Rather than using the reboot to grant victory to a different original girl, it introduced a new normie girl and pushed her to win. I never rewatched it, and the top review by kiriska made me think I should; so this time I will, after I rewatch Tenchi Universe.

The fourth continuity is the shortest:

Ai Tenchi Muyo (2014) https://myanimelist.net/anime/24699/Ai_Tenchi_Muyou
This short series introduced a whole harem of new girls, including another new victor, but I was able to accept and enjoy it for what it was. Certainly much better than OVA series 4.

Other spinoffs:

Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure (1999) https://myanimelist.net/anime/992/Dual_Parallel_Trouble_Adventures
The creator of Tenchi ripped off Evangelion, apparently, but made it more pleasant. Wikipedia goes into detail about its connection to Tenchi. I've known about this show for a decade but have never seen it; I think I'll watch it after I'm done rewatching all the Tenchi.

Photon: The Idiot Adventures (1997) https://myanimelist.net/anime/1944/Photon
I had never heard of this until I read this group's main page. It is a Masaki Kajishima creation, but I don't see any mention of connecting easter eggs like Dual has; still, I suppose it can easily be considered another part of his multiverse.

Tenchi Muyo! Mihoshi Special (1994) https://myanimelist.net/anime/2725/Tenchi_Muyou__Galaxy_Police_Mihoshi_Space_Adventure
Lonely OVA that doesn't fit in any continuity.

There are various "Pretty Sammy" series, featuring one of the original series' characters as a magical girl. I've only seen the first 3-episode OVA, which was not very good. I wouldn't mind checking out the others, but I'd much rather spend that time on PreCure instead.
1995 https://myanimelist.net/anime/1918/Mahou_Shoujo_Pretty_Sammy
1996 https://myanimelist.net/anime/1502/Mahou_Shoujo_Pretty_Sammy_1996
2006 https://myanimelist.net/anime/1881/Sasami__Mahou_Shoujo_Club
2006 https://myanimelist.net/anime/1882/Sasami__Mahou_Shoujo_Club_2

Also planning to watch for the first time later on:
One of the first ever isekai anime, El Hazard: The Magnificent World (1995) https://myanimelist.net/anime/117/El_Hazard__The_Magnificent_World
Never seen it. Has music by original Tenchi Muyo composer Seikou Nagaoka, which I'm keen to hear.

And... Outlaw Star. (1998) https://myanimelist.net/anime/400/Seihou_Bukyou_Outlaw_Star
I was one of many who caught this when it premiered on US TV on Toonami, January-February 2001. Haven't seen it since. Really looking forward to this.

The confusion doesn't apply if you only watch the first one or two OVA series :D

Following discussion we will now be doing a simulwatch at Bajar's "de geso" CyTube channel (see instructions there about installing the script), but this thread will still be the main hub. I'll paste the stream chat here.

And welcome, Mishukax!

It's easy to look like a normie girl in Tenchi, because everyone else is a space alien or worse and no one's right in the head (well I guess the loli Sasami is normal enough, I remember her as an oasis of sanity for Tenchi)

But... look at her, compared to that top image. Pudge would make her more likeable :P

Well there's one POV. I've been wondering for 18 years whether I would like her and that series more if I rewatched trying to accept her from the beginning -_-

UNMARKED SPOILER WARNING:
Spoilers for OVA 1 episode 1 begin here

The OP. I suppose having an instrumental OP rather than a song is sort of a 90's thing, Trigun for example. I wrote at the soundtrack club:
nDroae said:
What was your first favorite piece of anime music?

Mine was the instrumental OP of the original Tenchi Muyo OVA, 天地無用!魎皇鬼のテーマ / Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki's Theme, by Seikou Nagaoka.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8SiM2vuNcE
However, there's a complication: to me, that track was the ending credits music of my actual first anime, Tenchi Universe (a TV reboot of the original OVA). Toonami made that switch, and I'm glad they did; it remains one of my all time favorite pieces of anime music. I would like to confirm whether Toonami also used it as the credits music for the original OVA and/or Tenchi in Tokyo.

Here's the 30-second intro Toonami created for Tenchi Muyo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOaMxCvWwkY

When I first filled my favorite character list, I struggled to come up with even one male favorite anime character. I eventually settled on Tenchi's grandfather, and Lord Yupa from Nausicaa. I like cool old warriors.

Tenchi sure does have a round head.

We can make this work

Tenchi isn't in the "protagonist seat" at back left, probably because he won't be spending much time in this classroom. Stranger, the seats are oriented so that the windows are on the right.

I originally posted the following here: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=5071697#5071697

The better question is, why are the windows always on the left-hand side from the class's perspective, with the doors on the right (one front, one back) and a long hallway outside that only has classrooms on the one side? It doesn't matter whether the show's set in a decrepit rural school from the 1940s, or an ultramodern Tokyo academy, they all have the same layout. Is it just easier for animators to always work from one pattern, or do Japanese schools all use one standard design?

Still curious about why the windows are on the class' left (is this actually how most schools are, or is it just anime being the same for convenience's sake?).

Because the majority of the people right handed, and if the windows are on their left side, their shadow wouldn't cover up what they are writing. Sucks for left handed people haha.

I teach in Japan right now and I can confirm, with the schools I work at any way, that this is actually the case. The main blackboard and the teacher's podium (or desk sometimes) are all situated so that the students will have the windows on their left.

I saw some posts about this possibly being to catch in incoming warm of the sun. I doubt this. The schools are insanely hot as it is for half the year, and as for having the sun brighten the pages for right handed students again I think this is not the case as large (usually hideous 60s sea foam green at my schools) curtains are dragged across to blot out all the sunlight.

If I had to guess why I would have to go with it's just simply the 'Japanese way,' which is the answer I get from lots of my Japanese friends around here when I ask them why, such as why does (almost) everybody reverse stall park instead of pulling head in? - Japanese way.

What's funny to me is that until I saw this post I never really thought that it was weird that all the classrooms had the windows on the left!

EDIT - Also, it is true about two sets of sliding doors, on a the front and one at the back. All of my class rooms have this without fail. Apparently there is even a correctly half in each set you are supposed to open if you want them open, even though they both sides work fine.

This Redditor seems to suggest that placing windows on the left was once standard in schools worldwide. (Was it, though?)
https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/2j4gfm/is_there_a_reason_that_classroom_scenes_always/cl8a0mt/

The Onion-type satirical article:
https://www.animemaru.com/high-school-to-experiment-with-windows-on-other-side-of-classroom/

In retrospect, it's kind of funny how Tenchi's brief classroom scene makes you think "Oh, another high school anime," only to BLOW UP THE SCHOOL and spend the rest of the series in other locations. Tenchi in Tokyo, conversely, I remember being quite happy to retain the familiar setting.

Now then, Ai Orikasa as Ryoko. I have heard the Japanese voices before, in Ai Tenchi Muyo and the fourth OVA series, but Ryoko and Ayeka have minor roles in those, while Tenchi sounds very much the same in both languages.

Ryoko was never a favorite in the dub - I didn't dislike her, but she sounded like if she were human she'd be twice Tenchi's age or more, which I'd be fine with in some shows, but not so much this one. I had seen Crunchyroll user lawdog write: http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-1001339/new-catalog-titles-tenchi-muyo-tenchi-in-tokyo-kaleido-star-new-wings-noir?fpid=56736155 (I've corrected Petrea Burchard's name spelling)

And then we come to Petrea Burchard, who was the English VA for Ryoko, versus the magnificent Ai Orikasa.

All too often, the reaction I've seen when those used to the English dub here the original version for the first time, is something along the lines of "That's not Ryoko!"

The problem of course, is that Petrea Burchard's version is not Ryoko, and never has been.

That's not a diss at Ms. Burchard, who has a great voice. The problem is that the English version of Ryoko is infused by Ms. Buchard with a level of sensuality that was never intended for her character. The character lacks the playful immaturity given to it in the original version. The result is that dub version viewers often seem to have a problem reconciling how the character of Ryoko was intended to be designed...and then throw in that Yumi Takada's Ayeka doesn't have a snooty fake British accent, and the world view of how things are supposed to be usually gets rattled, in some cases, badly.

It's tricky because of the difference in standard pitch between cultures, but even so, I would say her voice itself sounds older in English. Hear for yourself: https://youtu.be/ZSf8tO7QIDc?t=892 The actress was about 40 at the time, though of course that doesn't necessarily come across in voice acting.

My verdict: Ryoko in Japanese is SUPER CUTE! She could potentially even be best girl. This is really exciting. Suddenly the Tenchi Muyo franchise as a whole is looking better than I ever thought.

Yeah, that teacher said he doubted it because of the curtains, but to me it seems most likely that that was the original reasoning, and remains standard whether it still has any practical purpose or not. Like driving on the left originating in wanting oncoming traffic to be on the side of the right hand sword, though I don't know whether that's proven as the reason.

I made the throwaway comment of the show being older than electric soldier porygon during a particularly active background sequence, but going through other stuff from around that time period it really is noticeable when something like that happens since obviously you don't see it anymore.

Incredibles 2 had that problem bad :D https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/incredibles-2-epilepsy-warning/

It annoys me when OPs dip to darker because of the fear of that, I wish there were a raw flashing option on CR like the uncensored option on some shows. :P

I think that scandal was the first time I ever read the term "anime." I was pronouncing it "uh-neem" for years.

UNMARKED SPOILER WARNING:
Spoilers for OVA 1 episode 2 begin here

Jurai = basically Japanese space-elves, without pointy ears. Their ships and tech are all made from bioengineered trees and wood. One of my favorite worlds in fiction, I love the aesthetic and the aura of it. Unfortunately the Juraiians themselves are... not much fun, for the most part. (Unless by fun you mean INCEEEEEST) (And I don't mean you x your imouto incest, I mean more like you x your great aunt) (I guess both are on the table though) (Anime~)

I forgot about the voyeur gag with Tenchi's dad (Noboyuki). I wonder how his later second wife would react to this. The fourth OVA series wasn't all worthless, I did like the parts covering the wedding.
https://tenchi.wikia.com/wiki/Rea_Masaki

Rea's actual purpose is "let me bear your child." Anime~~~ [2]

[18:29:26] ap_0001: can't believe he hasnt fallen face first into her chest yet
[18:29:30] must not be a light novel origin

Anime~~~~~~~~~ [3]

I find it odd that Tenchi would have a bikini pinup in his room, considering his notorious appearance of near-asexuality.

Maybe his dad made him put that poster up.

Tenchi's house is similar in the reboot universes, with a red roof and some other changes. I've always liked its design and wanted to make it in SimCity in the early 2000's, but never did. A year or two ago I finally made it in The Sims. This is the second version; first version was closer on the outside, but I found it was impossible to fit the large living room shown in the show inside.

WHOAH

I uh... I hope this is the first of many surprises. XD In the dub, she said "you're tickling me." https://youtu.be/x7L8xgX4vdo?t=611

Tenchi shows up carrying Sasami, but Ryoko does not make any lame "oh so you are a lolicon" type jokes. Nice.

People don't understand suspension bridges:
http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/movies/thecore_review.html
It's also wrong. A suspension bridge is actually pretty simple in theory. In this case, there are two towers. Cables are anchored on the shoreline and pass over the towers, going through loops at the top. The towers support the cable. From these cables are hung hangers (also called stringers) which support the deck, or roadway. The main cables apply an upward force to the hangers through tension. Tension keeps the cables taut, and is essentially a force to the sides, pointing toward the shoreline.

Think of it this way: imagine you and a friend, holding each end of a rope. I then hang a heavy weight from that rope. You both apply a force to the rope that holds up the weight. You are pulling outward, away from each other, which supplies tension to the rope, which holds up the weight.

The bridge is doing the same thing. The two main cables hold up the road by applying a force outward. Now, imagine that I take a pair of scissors, and cut the rope between you and your friend. Which direction will you fall? You'll fall outward, away from your friend (as he will fall away from you), because that's the direction you are pulling.

Get it? In the movie, when the main span broke, the cables would suddenly feel a huge force to the sides with no opposing force from the road. They would snap outwards, violently. They might pass through the tower loops without damaging the tower, though I suspect they might actually bend the towers. But the towers would bend outwards in that case, not inwards as depicted in the movie.

That said, that was about the middle of the bridge being melted away in The Core. If the middle were actually pulled down by the ship before breaking, then maybe the towers might lean in....?

One of my oldest surviving online footprints is... currently unavailable, but it's a blank SimCity 3000 terrain made from a picture Ryo-Ohki and uploaded to SC3000.com, when I was 13. I had a vendetta against Pokemon at the time, so when I saw a Pikachu terrain, I made this.

*enclosed

I also uploaded a Japan terrain under the mayor name "Tenchi Masaki." I never actually built a city on either.

Until now.
https://www.gog.com/game/simcity_3000

The readme.txt:
Thanks for downloading Ryoh-Ohki Island! As you can see, it is in the shape of Ryoh-Ohki, who is fortunately NOT a Pokemon. There are three terrain levels, at the 1, 2, and 3 levels, plus the underwater levels. The dark spot in the corner is the word "ARSCT". You can probably figure out what that means;-) I don't know how easy it would be to build a city on it, but the outline should remain after the rest has been flattened. Enjoy!
AndromadaRoach/Andro Cowei

Wow a typo on my own username :DDDDD

Most of the preserved detail is indecipherable, and I couldn't find the original image I used. Oh well.

The big white tower is "Pan Pacific Insurance," one of my old favorites from the game's official Asian building set. It's based on Yokohama's Landmark Tower, which turns up in anime occasionally.
http://www.skyscrapercenter.com/building/landmark-tower/547
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yokohama_Landmark_Tower

I think I recreated Pan Pacific Insurance in Spore in 2008. This guy recreated it in Cities: Skylines in 2016.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=628101617

Also, the blue tower above right of Pan Pacific Insurance above (two in the screenshot below) looks like it was based on Tokyo's NEC Supertower:
http://www.skyscrapercenter.com/building/nec-supertower/2366
http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=4223

In conclusion, the result is weird and creepy. Don't make terrains out of pictures of anime characters.

By the way there is another El Hazard OVA

Also there is a spinoff of Outlaw Star (not sure if there is any connection to the Tenchiverse)

Now that I look into it, I see that Ayeka, Mihoshi, and "grandpa" were all recast in the fourth OVA series (Japanese version). And that grandpa and dad had the same seiyuu in this and several other series. https://myanimelist.net/people/142/Takeshi_Aono

The monk in Dororo isn't technically a grandfather, but he is certainly cool. 1969 version:

[19:34:43] nDroae: her clumsy is maximum
[19:34:55] ap_0001: failure levels approaching 0.2 space kaos

90's!

I'm hoping I'll like Mihoshi more in Japanese; so far she seems alright, but the test will come when I get to Tenchi Universe. There, Mihoshi was the annoying boke to her tsukkomi partner, Kiyone. Longsuffering Kiyone was my favorite, but doesn't exist in this official/original canon.
https://www.giantbomb.com/kiyone/3005-10051/images/?tag=Screen%20Shots

A few years ago I discovered that THE KIYONE FANS are regarded as a plague: https://www.google.com/search?q=%22kiyone+fans%22

https://www.uselesstenchi.org/Forum/index.php?topic=231.45
Dr.Soviet: I think the majority of Noike hate comes from Kiyone fans that are still 10 YEARS LATER mad about Noike being in OVA 3 and not Kiyone. Also she was a common enemy for shippers that felt "Threatened" by her.

bishopcruz: And yeah, the Kiyone fans. Kiyone is a fun foil people, but she's barely a character!!!!!!!

LightHawkWing: Hate to admit it but you're right about Kiyone. What else did she have going for her besides her partnership and disdain for Mihoshi?

Tenchi Ryu: Kiyone isn't exactly a special character to me. I definitely don't hate her, nor don't wish for her to never return. But my overall opinion of her is..."meh". She had the cop-duo thing going on with Mihoshi, but if you took that away, you didn't really have much else. I also think it took away a lot of Mihoshi's independence. Even in OVA 3, Mihoshi might be a clutz, but she still has her own life and her own hobbies.

جبريل 無道: Do you guys really want to give my Kiyone-fangyrlishness time to shine? Anyway, the Kiyone we see in TU [Tenchi Universe] is not the original Kiyone who had an attraction to Tenchi in nearly every continuity except TU.
(...)She was very interesting. That TU took her and made her a 1 trick pony is par for the course for TU, in how it flatted every character is no surprise.

The wiki: https://tenchi.fandom.com/wiki/Kiyone_Makibi
Saddled with the bumbling Mihoshi as a partner, Kiyone's career suffered; she has become somewhat bitter and depressed with her misfortune, hoping that she can earn a promotion and transfer away from Mihoshi, which would ensure much better prospects for the future.

As a 12-year-old, I picked her because I liked her hair color/style, and because of the primitive appeal of a girl trapped in a pathetic situation, longing for rescue. Which seems to be a popular fantasy at the moment, judging by superlative positive reactions to Shield Hero.

"Top anime fathers." -Mishukax

Reminder that MAL's current genre tags on this OVA are "Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi, Shounen, Space" - but neither Ecchi nor Harem - as we hit six plus minutes of nude Ryoko.

[19:41:17] ap_0001: the thing is they just treat it as part of the episode and keep the flow going
[19:41:28] as opposed to just "stop what you're doing here are some nips"
[19:41:36] nDroae: yes this is much better
[19:42:01] also works better for the censored toonami version
[19:42:45] ap_0001: now they'd spend 45 seconds panning up the girls bodies before the bottom part of hannen's swimsuit falls off and you don't see anything anyway
[19:42:58] and that would be the joke

One advantage the American animated film Heavy Metal (1981) has in this area is that its creators were able to draw a thick bush, rather than the sexless Barbie look Ryoko has below the waist. Though I suppose my preference may be in the minority now. :P

"We are more and more directing the desires of men to something which does not exist - making the role of the eye in sexuality more and more important and at the same time making its demands more and more impossible."
-the demon Screwtape, from The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis

That moment at the end where the villain's huge spaceship shows up.

it's good to know norio wakamoto was god-tier as far back as 1992. Really enjoyed Kagato the last couple episodes. Being only six episodes, it didn't have the same "now suddenly, DRAMA" feeling that I hate when 12/13 episode series do it but on the other hand, the series never felt like it found a footing of what it actually wanted to be in the first place.

I never really felt that any of the girls besides the main two rose to the level of "harem member" (which wouldn't really make it a harem, per se) but maybe that changes as the continuity goes along? I also didn't find any of the girls aesthetically appealing in the slightest which is kind of an issue for a show with a lot of girls in it. The grandpa was a lot of fun. I went in expecting Tenchi to be closer to an ataru from urusei yatsura and he wasn't that at all. He could have used more characterization and screen time I think - the minor girls just weren't interesting enough to warrant what they had.

You already quoted my point about the nudity - it's there, but it's very rarely a focal point of the scenes where they happen. It's just like "oh ryoko just happens to be naked in this scene" and you notice it but they don't go flashing alarm bells and cloisters at you, and it's refreshing. Not like how you evolve a kirara and they show more skin like 95% of the time (not that I'm complaining in kotone's case). I expect it to become more like the modern shows as we progress through the timeline.

Dropping Heavy Metal (1981) references in here, goodness.

There's a Super Best Friends reference for everything

Pat: Why would king weeb Woolie watch the shameful dub?
Woolie: Miss out on fuckin' best boy Norio Wakamoto?
Pat: Why don't you just fly over there and suck his dick already?
Woolie: He's really old.
Matt: Isn't he dead?
Woolie. No. No! He's super alive! He just did Cell in Dragon Ball FighterZ!
Pat: You love him, but you won't suck his dick cuz he's old. That's horrible.
Matt: That's sex- that's ageist.
Woolie: Hey. That's the only thing stopping me.
(from a conversation about Legend of the Galactic Heroes)

It's difficult for me to assess how well it succeeds in being what it wants to be, because of it being my first anime. Yeah, generally you only get Ryoko vs. Ayeka seriously wanting and fighting over Tenchi, or at least that's how I remember the dub. Kiyone was disliked by some for being the only one who seemed to have no interest in him at all.

"as we progress through the timeline" - Oh, do you plan to continue? I will, but I wasn't expecting anyone else would. :D

The fourth OVA series (2016-2017) also has that kind of casual nudity... I think War on Geminar (2009) had the most "YO, BOOBS" in it. I remember GXP (2002) having a lot of fanservice which I *think* was more the former, but I'm not sure.

Heavy Metal '81 references EVERYWHERE!

Tenchi seems to have been cut in half. Didn't notice that before. Could've given him spider legs!

[19:29:36] bajar: I'll take stereotypical evil dude things for 200 alex
[19:31:25] ap_0001: it's one of the first entries on tvtropes for ominous pipe organ

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OminousPipeOrgan

Anime and Manga entry #2: "Kagato in Tenchi Muyo! is, well, not quite introduced, but featured, playing a series-original Bach-esque piece on a truly enormous science-fictional organ."

Those giant pipes should be literally deafening, no?

[19:32:48] ap_0001: ugh nobody likes assholes who cast petrify

Apparently Mihoshi has the power to turn serious threats into googly-eyed comedy fodder:

Fifth girl is the mischievous mad scientist Washu, with the hair that looks like crab legs (or an entire crab). I always liked her, though I never saw her as a contender for Tenchi; I find it interesting that some do.

Which finger is that?

This episode also introduces the cosmic entity Tsunami. More about her, and her connection to Sasami, is revealed later on.

[19:41:46] ap_0001: kinda seeing why it's called tenchi muyo
[19:42:34] he's been about as useful as kaos since like... episode 3

After this there were some comments about Kagato being a good villain because you want to see him defeated, but I didn't save them before Bajar cleared the chat :P

Magical boy transformation and the Kurosawa duel shot

So Tenchi's power pretty much flatlines from the end of episode 1 until this moment, where he unlocks his true power, suddenly becomes much stronger than Kagato, and easily wins in one slash. No clever tactics, no great exertion, and he's not really an underdog anymore; he's just an OP MC now. To me, this is the "original" default for anime, so I accepted it completely in Sword Art Online and even Smartphone, which skips to max OP from the very start and focuses on having fun with it. Not that I necessarily prefer it this way (an obvious counterexample being Jojo).

Given the similarity here, I went looking through the TV Tropes page for Thor Ragnarok. Conclusion: while Tenchi/Thor is being beaten by Kagato/Hela,Spirit Advisor Tsunami/Odin makes him realize that innate power Was With You All Along, resulting in an Epiphany Comeback.

I'm keeping my original 8/10 on this OVA.
