Unpolished, unappealing and incredibly middling.
Well then, this was about as ugly as I was picturing. Colour scheme is awful, the animation was nothing to write home about... I might be alone on this one, but it even felt like there was some dissonance between the voice acting and facial expressions. As someone who isn't invested in these characters at all, this was torture.

Come episode 3, if I still don't like the new style this is a definite drop.

This was one of the most visually off-putting and lazily animated episodes of an anime series I've seen in my entire life, and dear Lord, I wish what I've just said was an exaggeration. Genos looks like a walking-talking metallic turd with lighting so awful I'm surprised I've not gone blind yet. The same applies to anything that resembles or is a cyborg. Heck it, everyone here looks bloody atrocious. Who thought it was passable? Who believed it's okay to produce something so lifeless, bereft of energy and any sort of personality? One Punch Man had one thing going for it, its visuals. They're not here anymore. There's nothing left. It's empty.

I'll suffer through and complete it like an utter masochist I am though. As terrible and painful as it may be, I want to see it till the very end.

Holy FUCK did Genos look awful.
I was going to find a frame of Genos to compare to S1, but because the only parts of the episode featuring him are the "fight scene", every single frame of him is fucking blurred as a cost saving method to mimic intensity. Not only this, but I was also brutally reminded that the entire episode consists of close up panning shots or jump cuts that don't actually show anything happening. The only shot that doesn't fall into this criteria is the one of Genos back-flipping through the air and even that looks like they took a character model in the fetal position and just rotated it at the desired frame rate.

This all not even mentioning that the sound design is obnoxious as fuck with blown out sound effects that might as well be screaming "za warudu".

If all season 1 had going for it was animation, all that's left now is voice acting talent (which has its own share of issues).

This is roughly about what I expected...which is bad but at least I wasn't disappointed. I'm more than able to forgo my memory of season 1 to view this as just another plain old seasonal but it's quite sad that this is what must be done in order to not find this offensive. The amount of panning shots gave me severe PTSD flashbacks to Food Wars season 3. Like y'all have already said, the animation leaves a LOT to be desired, the artstyle is just...off, and the sound design is obnoxious.

Aside from the technical aspects, the humor fell completely flat for me as well, which is a shame since the first season had me consistently smiling and lightly chuckling. The characters themselves have also lost their vibrancy as their seiyuus seem far less into their roles compared to last season imo. Overall, it's been completely drained of its charm and is borderline repugnant visually. The audacity of this to even exist after Mob Psycho 100 II is something else I tell ya.

I'm really only continuing this for Fubuki, hope that hot piece of ass gets a good amount of screen time.

Also, didn't King do some superhero shit in the final battle of season 1 when he lifted up huge ass pieces of concrete and threw them at the alien spaceship? Is that just being retconned or am I buggin'?

Amen to the Fubuki comment. I think this was King's introductory episode, although I'm pretty sure he was talked about a lot back in S1. No concrete tossing for him ;p

Ok, I just briefly skimmed over the last few eps of season 1 and he was introduced at the S class hero meeting but he didn't do anything, it was the black dude who threw concrete, my b.

Studio Pierrot pulling out all the stops with some of their best animation here.

Oh wait, this isn't Pierrot... This is JC Staff?

This is probably the last premiere I'm gonna watch for a while and wooo boy is this terrible! Everyone and their mother has torn the terrible visuals to shreds, what with the sheer lack of any real animation throughout a vast majority of the action scenes this episode, all the bad quick cuts with no semblance of flow or any cohesion to the point where the main fight of the episode is genuinely incomprehensible, the CGI, the inconsistent coloration for Genos, etc. etc. Sadly, this dead feeling extends to the writing as well, with tons of monologuing and joke delivery that feels absolutely dry compared to a lot of the exaggerative, punchy delivery of the first season. It's just taking itself seriously and frankly, I never cared when season 1 took itself seriously either and when that show at least banked on its stellar visuals, great music, and surprisingly decent emotional beats, and this first episode has absolutely none of that in any way, shape, or form, you know this premiere fails as a follow-up. It becomes all the more humiliating when you consider how OPM's counterpart, Mob Psycho 100, a manga written by the same author as OPM, got its adaptation's second season to practically push the boundaries of modern TV anime literally the season before this. It's embarrassing. Expect a harsh write-up once this season ends.
