| I think comparing one thing to another one is not something bad, because we need something to compare to when we make a measurement, so it is necessary. Even I think we unconciusly to compare the thing with what we have experienced in the past. Should it be avoided? yes when we have a universal standard that objectively everyone agreed on. But that is not the case, cause what we have now is a guideline to judging its good or not based on experienced of majority. So in the end to have a good judging on anime we need to watch a lot of anime (even the bad one). |

| I guess when thinking about a show individually it would be best to only be thinking about that show, but when giving ratings you should definitely be thinking about other shows. A rating is supposed to represent how you feel about a show when compared to other ones. For example if you give Mushishi a 9/10, that means you're saying you like Mushishi more than everything scored an 8/10 and below, but you like it less than anything scored as a 10.
