Hello! For anyone wondering, I wanted to list the major pieces of content that were cut from the manga.

Anime adapted chapters 1-15 and a bit of 16 (volumes 1-3). Movie adapted from chapter 16-28 (volumes 4 and 5). We're currently on chapter 38 (halfway volume 7).

=====

First of all, the movie pretty much didn't alter scenes nor dialogues. For its short length, it actually tried to adapt everything as faithfully as it could, which is pretty much what's expected from Lerche (they always try to do right by the source material).

That being said, they made a LOT of scenes shorter, by cutting dialogues, inner monologues and some visuals. If you noticed pacing issues, it was most likely because of this. I would say, generally speaking, they cut 15-20% of the scenes they showed by making them shorter. However, the art of the movie definitely did right by the manga, which has exceptional art.

=====

They also cut 5 longer scenes (almost whole chapters). These are as follows:

=====

Chapters 18, 23 and 25 were mostly about Ue & Mafuyu

3 major scenes (1 per chapter) were cut entirely, which quite frankly is good news! Because they can very, very easily revisit and repurpose all of this content if they make a second season.

Chapter 18 - The boys are feeling distant and have an argument (precious chapter).

Chapter 23 - Mafuyu spends the night at Ue's house. He also meets his sister.

Chapter 25 - Uenoyama and Mafuyu arrive at the contest stage for the first time (as spectators). This scene was short in the movie and they focused it on the conversation Haruki and Mafuyu had. In the manga, however, Ue finally meets Mafuyu's childhood friends, Hiiragi and Shizu.

=====

Chapters 22 & 24

Chapter 22 was almost entirely cut. The dramatic fireworks scene with Haruki and Akihiko was actually only the end of this chapter. It's actually a very funny chapter that begins with Take-chan visiting Haruki and confronting him about his decision to let Akihiko live there. Then we get Mafuyu and Hiigari meeting each other at the festival wearing yukatas; they talk about the upcoming contest and the lyrics issue. Then it gets very cute when Ue finds Mafuyu, since he wasn't expecting him to wear a yukata; they also talk about what's going on with Haruki and Akihiko.

Chapter 24 was cut too. In the manga, Mafuyu's struggle to write the lyrics was much more developed here, and we also get to hear from Ue's highschool friends.

I don't believe we will get back this content because it was an organic part of the Haruki & Akihiko plot. These were probably the biggest "sacrifices" the studio settled on.

=====

That is all! Out of the 13 chapters that the movie adapted, 5 of them were mostly cut, and the remaining cut content was done by shortening scenes.

During the credits of the movie they showed isolated pictures of the cut content btw.

If they had added just 10 more minutes of content to let the plot breathe, the movie would've been beyond perfect.

So far we need 1 more volume for a second season. It might take 2-3 years before it airs, but I'm sure it will happen!

No, it wouldn't.

The movie was mediocre in nearly every way. From disturbing implied sex, to characters smoking and drinking. It was pretty bad overall, and there was nothing that could make it enjoyable.

Lmao with this take. There was no sex, what they showed is what happened and then they stopped.

And a guy as miserable as Akihiko, smoking and drinking? Who would've thought! That NEVER happens in real life.

Not everyone drinks and smokes. And why does Haruki smoke, then? It seems like every anime character that's 20 or older drinks and smokes, which is stupid and offensive.

Haruki isn't the face of mental health either; they're both a mess. Plus, "cool" and troubled anime characters tend to be shown smoking quite often.

This anime does no effort to promote or glamorize smoking and drinking. Find another reason to dislike it because that ain't it.

There's nothing "cool" about smoking and drinking. It's a real turnoff.

I didn't like the Given TV series for the music. I liked it because of the character development, but the movie lacked those things.

I said "cool" and troubled characters are portrayed as smokers in anime. You must have noticed this, it's a stereotype they have going on.

And Ugetsu, Haruki and mainly Akihiko are wildly developed in this movie. It doesn't lack it, it's all about it. That being said, you probably didn't relate to it because of the pacing, which is fine and I can see that happening.

If you liked the anime you could give the manga a chance, the "beyond perfect" description I gave in a previous reply is based of course on the manga, where the character development was certainly conveyed and the "sex" scene is shown differently because of the dialogues, a lot of scenes felt different in the movie.

Ugetsu, Haruki and Akihiko are not interesting characters in my opinion. Maybe that's why I didn't like it.

Also, if there's any more "sex" in the manga, then I don't want to read it, because sex weirds me out.

Yeah I practically watched while rereading the manga. I bet anime-onlys had a much easier time
