I'm playing the visual novel and enjoying it a lot so far.

Do you need to play Higurashi to read or play Higanbana?

Higanbana and Higurashi aren't related but if you play/read/watch Higurashi you should play/read Umineko no naku koro ni too ( don't watch the anime it isn't worth it ), you can also read Ciconia no naku koro ni and Rose Guns Days but these aren't related to Higurashi (maybe Ciconia a little)
