Over social media I have seen many people siding with Ugetsu following the release of the movie and I am curious to see other's opinions. I read the manga and believe the movie didn't do the relationships justice. Also, as I express my opinion, I am in no way saying Akihiko is perfect or justifying his behavior towards Haruki.
As we see in the movie, Aki and Ugetsu had a very emotionally manipulative, toxic relationship. Ugetsu wanted out and wanted to do so by hurting Akihiko enough to make him leave. This lead to him bringing one night stands and boyfriends home all the while still entertaining Aki if he wanted him. Ugetsu had the man completely under his thumb.
As for the apartment scene, Akihiko has taught himself that his only value is his body and if he can use that to his advantage, he will. In addition to that, Ugetsu would sleep with him whenever he pushed so he learned he could get his way. Everything up until that moment he was taught was ok but when he realized it hurt Haru he went and worked to be a better person.
The difference between Akihiko and Ugetsu is that Aki worked to be a better person whereas Ugetsu became depressed when he finally got what he had been asking for for so long. I've seen many people share the scene of Ugetsu crying when Aki finally leaves, sympathizing with him and saying that he deserved better and Akihiko hurt him which I genuinely don't...understand?? He wanted to hurt Aki beyond repair so the man would leave him and when he finally did, he was sad?
I also see so many people making Akihiko out to be the villain and there were Aki "hate clubs" even when the movie was released. Which again, how he treated Haru in the apartment scene was not ok but he did the right thing and worked to become a better person. People can be taught things are right by their circumstances and have no clue how bad they are and I think in this case, thats what happened but at least he didn't continue with the behavior. I find Akihiko to be an incredible character.

I don't get how people can pick sides, because they were toxic to eachother, it wasn't a one sided thing. I think they're both heavily in the wrong.

I personally don't like Akihiko that much, especially after a specific scene with Haru, but I can understand where you are coming from entirely and I agree with you.

Idk why people choose sides, both were wrong, like Ugetsu was emotionally manipulating and cheating on Akihiko for years, that is as bad as the thing Aki was about to do to Haruki in that scene. Also I think the hate for Aki increase after the movie release because the movie didn't go that deep with Ugetsu and because of that people think he wasn't that bad.

i know this is months old but i thought i'd add a thought as someone who's watched all the anime/movie and read the manga up to about episode 9-10 of the anime

personally i like ugetsu but i also have a penchant for the asshole characters (see: izaya, akechi goro, akashi seijuro, dazai, chuuya) so obviously i am biased as hell

kaji left a bad taste in my mouth, and this is speaking from a pure movie only perspective. ugetsu was kind of implied from the start to be an asshole, so him turning out to really be an ass with the toxic relationship wasn't surprising since the relationship was also kind of implied. kaji however, was shown to be this cool reliable big brother type of guy, who seemed to maybe-know-maybe-not-know about haruki's crush and was nice to the people around him - that's why in the movie when he hits a low point and was an asshole, it hits harder.

also as a viewer, we've built up this affection for kaji in the anime to now, so it's kind of a betrayal emotion that he turned out this way when we thought better of him. ugetsu hardly appeared in the anime so he's just shown to be an asshole and it's easier to accept that "yeah he's an ass, so what?" versus kaji being this cool respectable dude that ended up being different from what we thought.

clearly they're both in the wrong, though i think there is still a difference.

firstly, i don't think it can be said that ugetsu cheated on kaji because they Did break up - it just wasn't a very official one, like being demoted from partners to sex friends. in the movie, although kaji called ugetsu's partner his 'violin boyfriend', i don't recall it being said if he was dating other people or just sleeping around (feel free to correct me on this one). essentially they were clearly not in a strict relationship anymore, so i wouldn't personally call it cheating.

secondly, i think why kaji's actions left a bad taste was because kaji knew what it felt like to be strung on and thrown away. ugetsu and kaji's relationship turning toxic was their own result of bad stuff combined (not communicating, not officially cutting off the relationship because they got codependent and ugetsu's own case of cowardice, etc). it's both party's fault. - on the other hand with haruki, kaji is in my opinion to be blamed, he knew what it was like and yet he did it to haruki, he knew he couldn't reciprocate it (in the anime at least) and yet he still played along with haruki's feelings because he liked receiving attention which he couldn't get from the person he actually wanted to get it from. haruki was fine with it being one sided, he knew kaji had a history of sleeping around and stuff, kaji took it to the next level by giving him false hope and using haruki's emotions for his own satisfaction - or even if he did like haruki back romantically before the mess that happens in the movie, it doesn't give him the right to string him along like that when he was in no position to return it, seeing as he was still focused on ugetsu

finally the difference between kaji and ugetsu after the mess, i would say both of them got fairly depressed. kaji slept around, committed a whole ass crime, and even then he was pushy and continued sleeping at haruki's house after it (which was so icky, i really hated how pushy he was in so many parts of the movie). the difference is more so that kaji moved on faster, he had haruki by his side to "get back on his feet". even then, he still did some wack stuff like skipping the day before the contest when the rest of the band members showed up to look around, and he didnt even bring his phone or tell anyone he wouldn't be there (aka the day he went back to tell ugetsu he was moving out)

ugetsu had no one. it was only when mafuyu visited that he realized kaji really wasn't coming back anymore. they'd been in this pattern for so long, ugetsu's used to him eventually showing up, so he's still half expecting it until now. when kaji finally came back to say he was moving out, ugetsu was fine with it, he was starting to accept it - when he gets mad at kaji during this scene, it's not because he wants kaji to stay, but because he thought kaji was going to forget the violin. music has always been the love language in given and for ugetsu and kaji, it was the violin. he says it too in the movie, even if they can never stay the same, he hopes at least the music will stay the same. i like to think that the violin symbolizes not just their memories of their relationship but also their relationship to music itself, the starting point of their passion for the arts and dedication to it. what kaji said that set ugetsu off was specifically "i want to leave here and play different music", i personally interpret it as forgetting your own roots, which of course, to ugetsu who is a professional violinist and loves that music, would feel disrespectful.

at the end, i think even if kaji didn't run after ugetsu, it would still be a break up, it's just that with the verbal communication (that they were missing this entire time) it hits harder. i think that also helped ugetsu to accept the real end to their relationship a lot faster than if he didnt get this confirmation, he too had loved kaji all this time, it's the knowledge that they were both hurting each other more than helping each other that had set this whole mess in the first place. and because ugetsu loved kaji but was also too cowardly to give him up despite that knowledge and thus hoping kaji would be the one to sever their ties instead - which he did, along with the consolation that kaji did love and appreciate the violin. more musical love language lmao

i hope what i wrote makes sense, i havent slept and i literally just finished the whole series an hour ago lmao anyway in conclusion, i like ugetsu who's weakness was one of the many causes for a bad relationship, i don't particularly like kaji who's weakness hurt an innocent person. everyone else is Good Boy material, especially mafuyu, ue chan and hiiragi. also take chan best friend

Ugetsu and Akihiko together would’ve just tore each other apart until neither of them could do it anymore. They were too toxic together. They were miserable. It just wouldn’t work. I’m not even joking, when they officially broke up and Ugetsu turned around and lifted his foot to go after Akihiko, I pointed at the screen and said, “No, don’t you dare move.”

I think Haruki can do better than Akihiko, tbh, but he viewed the apartment thing as consensual; Akihiko bettered himself over the course of like, half a year, maybe more; Haruki accepted. So I guess that’s where it’s gonna go.
