So, I wasn't there to see the golden age of mecha, but there are a few I really like. I really enjoy SSSS.Gridman and SSSS.Dynazenon this season and I was wondering, what old mecha fans think of it.

As a Code Geass and Neon Genesis Evangelion fan, I think of it as a new-gen mecha... Mecha with strengthen technology in general. I enjoy it, though mecha these days are kind of similar and lack of uniqueness.

I've seen a lot of older Mecha like Transformers and Bubble crash and Neon Genesis.

I've not seen gridman I skipped to Dynazenon and I've been really enjoying it at the moment

Yeah, personally, I feel like a kid watching SSSS. series and it's really cool. So I tried watching older mecha but it's not quite the same. I feel like SSSS. series take the old mecha archetype and adapt it to new generation.

Yeah that's why "mecha is dead"... but when I see SSSS., I'm glad it exists.

It's tough to say. I think a big audience for this are people who grew up watching Tokusatsu and 70s mecha vs real robot and beyond mecha. What's neat is beyond the clear homages there's so many anime fans who've never seen shows like that and thus this anime feels fresh and original to them.

Yeah I didn't watch a lot of old mecha anime or tokusatsu series, but I can feel the homage and references hiding in this show

No, I'm a fan of mecha thanks to Gundam, when I saw Gridman I had high expectations but with the fanservice, characters like a blank sheet and 0 tension, I got bored. Hope 86 is better.

Depends. Fans of classic “Real Robot” series like Gundam, Dougram, Ideon and the like probably will not enjoy this show (as some of the comments seem to support), because it lacks the gritty realism & political subtext of that genre.

However, fans of “Super Robot” series, especially later (post-Go Nagai era) shows like Giant Gorg, GaoGaiGar, Gurren Lagann, etc will likely enjoy it because of the shared use of overblown action & characters, plus a tendency to not take those characters or story events entirely seriously.

I’m personally in the “like it” camp, as my love of Super Robot mechs, tokusatsu-style action, and Studio Trigger tongue-in-cheek writing find a nice home in Dynazenon, as it did in Gridman before it 😁

Yeah, I get why old mecha fans that liked the politic aspect of shows like gundam or lotgh would not like this.
I'm glad you like it too ^^

If nothing else, it’s got a slick visual style, the intrigue of yet-unrevealed plot lines lurking below the surface, and hilarious scenes like the drawn-out churro conversation in ep5 😄

Same, I was happy to hear that Tsuburaya Productions is doing a "Gridman project", so I hope we will see other SSSS. anime series :)
Seeing this one already made me want to rewatch Gridman ( I love the openings )
But yeah, it's funny how I was sceptic at first when I looked at this childish, kind of like, robot, with average teenagers characters ( that I don't really see in old mecha anime, but seems like the characters could be fan of old mecha or tokusatsu series ). But it ultimately has more depth than this while being fun :))

I liked it story wise and thought it was a good watch but I did wish that trigger decided to not make all the fights cgi

As a mecha show? its shit, I dont really view this as a mecha show but more on character relations and whats happening behind the scene, Gundam does that a lot too but the mecha fights in Gundam are hype af, fights in the SSSS series are full on cgi, cant really enjoy them even if I wanted too.

there are 2 kinds of mecha shows one is realistic robot genre and the other is super robot genre so i guess Gridman borderlines to Super Robot Show genre and because im a fan of Gurren Lagann you can point out that im enjoying Gridman too

Gundam is realistic robot genre

A bit to much shounen. If it was a little more seinen, it would have been better.
