Self explanatory title, imo definitely lesbians, it doesn't take light yagami level IQ to see the clear queerness of this show and its story, like come on two girls who are more than close fighting fantasy h/tler, literally the gayest thing ever

This is a beautiful quote.

It sits in a gray area. The girls are really, really close, and there is no opposite sex love interest for either of them. On the other hand, they aren't explicitly in a relationship.

This is all at the level of speculation, since they simply would not be able to ignore it further if they had sex at some point. Not to mention, anime has a unspoken rule that any teasing or bait does not involve intimate romantic interaction. If this happens, then you have an open and intentional romantic show. But Izetta is not like that. So, this show does have an intentional yuri bait (and Ichiro took that formula to its finale in G-Witch, which is in many ways a copy of Izetta), but it was never an objective romance.

As for your "shorthand", anime mostly only uses such things as jokes. It's like if someone unironically using metaphors of predators chasing prey in a modern Hollywood movie, lol. Seriously, I get it, but I'm starting to get confused by people trying to read old clichés from 20th or even 19th century literature into modern media. In 10's Japan, no one had to be so old-fashioned metaphorical to be "published." Although what am I asking about, if Western shippers, even after decades, completely throw out the “becoming a couple” phase and try to place any pairing in a supposedly already existing relationship, when even the very fact of the existence of affection is still a subject of interpretation.

@Fail_Man_X Ironically, despite the fact that Ichiro basically copied 90% of the plot of this show in G-WItch and even made it a literal yuri, the relationships of the characters there turned out to be even more ambiguous, lmao.
