For me it's just a hobby. To be honest, I feel like Japanese isn't particularly useful and there are more useful languages I could learn like Russian or Chinese. But I actually ENJOY Japanese media which I can't say about stuff in other languages. It's more based on feel than on usefulness, I guess.

I feel very similarly. I find the Japanese language a lot more interesting than other languages theoretically because of kanji and fascinating etymologies, but a big reason for me is also that I just don't have interest in media from other languages. In English we have pretty much all our needs met in terms of content. The only content from another language I'm interested in is Korean dramas and even then its not super high interest. For languages without content you're interested in, I feel immersion learning isn't viable and it would be much easier for people to learn it by living in the target country (which they do).

i got bored in pandemic so i learn it

reason i learn japanese out of others:
1. i learned hangul and kana a couple years ago, so why not continue
2. i've heard it's one of the hardest language in the world, and yeah i agree, can't think a language that is harder than japanese
3. outside of english and my native lang i'm only interested in japanese content
