What exactly is the source material for this show?

What is the source material? This is what i was told to watch first, so i am, but i wanted to know what it was based on. MAL says the manga came out years after the television show.. unless I'm just slow.

My taste is trash. So is yours.

Stand Alone Complex is almost entirely anime-original, but it takes some stuff from the 1989 manga. The SAC manga and light novels both came out after the show. If I understand right, the light novels are original stories in the same universe and the manga is a direct adaptation of the anime.

Ghost in the shell, is a franchise with a range of different timelines, a lot of newcomers to the franchise think that everything is linked to the same universe, the movies are separate and the shows are separate, they have the same characters but are shown differently, SAC compared to Innocence and the 1997 movie is more action packed, the manga is a different portrayal of the characters, I'd say that the manga adaptation of SAC is not worth it but the original (which is kinda hard to get hold of) is worth it, but personally I think the vast anime adaptations of GiTs are superior, except for SAC 2045 of course
