Quite atmospheric and makes you think about the "mood" of your own city/country. Really appropriate title for the message (the mother of all sighs).

This film made me feel so uncomfortable. The music, the tone, and what's happening in the film completely encapsulated me in an unsettling bubble.
It's great at showcasing depression and a worthy watch.
I want to sleep...

I think the Whale is an entendre for both the individual and society. Since society in of itself is just a collection of individuals. We open up the film with a whale that is stranded and appears to be in the process of dying. We see the traffic lights switching from red to green, and lights of the buildings going on and off- indicating that life is continuing in this busy city while the whale continues to be neglected.

What's interesting about this entendre, is that wales actually explode when they die. Beached whales have to be dealt with both swiftly and professionally to prevent literal eruption. As a result, humans are told to stay away from beached whales at all costs. It's important that a whale is used in this story, as that [is likely] reflective of how we as society treat each other, especially in bigger cities where the motto is often "Keep your head down, mind your business and continue forward;" almost certain to avoid any unnecessary trouble. True story my uncle David, born and raised in Brooklyn New York tells of a time a man was going to commit suicide on the subway tracks and he told the man "He better not, because he can't be late to work because of him"

The whale's inevitable explosion of course is representative not only of the "death" of the individual - which can be taken metaphorically or literally, but of society in of itself. Neglecting sustained unhappiness only perpetuates further sustained unhappiness. After the whale explodes we're shown imagery of the once seemingly thriving city now essentially a "ghostown" with abandoned cars, buildings and a park covered in whale guts and darkness. The film ends with the shadow of the whale now patrolling the desolate city.

Let him be accursed
O Lord, Amen!

Excellent writeup on the film - really refreshing to read something worthwhile here, instead of the usual one-liner nonsense you'll see. I didn't actually know whales explode when they die (especially if they're interfered with as the article mentions), so this makes the symbolism even more meaningful.

Interesting imagery. The whale being an allegory to our neglected society.

From the description-

These sceneries are a remembrance of the depression which has been hanging over South Korea quite a while.

Unsettling in an enjoyable way. The film set up expectations very nicely with the music and was just the right length to explore desolation and impermanence. Every now and then I stumble upon a short dementia piece like this, something that leaves a strong impression and a mood that I can think about much longer than the running time. Just finding one of these gems makes it worth watching a dozen pieces that I can't connect with.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
