Aside from the expected... tension, I enjoyed the interactions with side characters and family. The whole sequence of trading simple things that lead to Masashi getting a morning glory that Asako is fond of was cool.
It reminded me of the old Japanese folk tale about a man finding something unimportant. By a series of trades with people who need what has and winds up rich.
