The eighth and latest season premiered in November 2020 and ended with 14 episodes last March. A ninth season is currently in development, scheduled for a 2022 debut.

Shirow Miwa (Dogs: Bullets & Carnage) serialized a manga adaptation in Ultra Jump from November 2015 to February 2017. VIZ Media released the manga in English weekly on their Weekly Shounen Jump magazine and published the single volume in January 2018.

Synopsis
In the world of Remnant, humans and Faunus—human-animal hybrids—carry on their everyday lives despite the omnipresent threat of the monstrous Grimm. Dedicated Huntsmen and Huntresses battle Grimm with both customized weapons and their own "Semblances," unique abilities derived from the energy of one's soul. Some warriors also utilize a crystallized energy propellant, "Dust," to bestow their weapons with elemental properties. In this dangerous line of work, rigorous training is required to stay alive. To that end, each of Remnant's four Kingdoms have established schools to properly groom children holding aspirations of becoming licensed Huntsmen.

At Beacon Academy in the Kingdom of Vale, a promising group of future Huntresses make their debut as Team RWBY. Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long each come from different backgrounds and often butt heads as a result. However, when they cooperate, they are a formidable force who have even attracted the attention of Beacon's headmaster Professor Ozpin. Alongside fellow students such as those in Team JNPR, the young prodigy Ruby and her friends engage in adventures which pit them against an extremist Faunus group known as the White Fang. Every explosive encounter also brings them closer to the true villains orchestrating conflicts from the shadows. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Lots of promising staff and cast, wow. But too bad the Williams aren't going to be composing the music

It'll be an interesting watch for sure. The main series is in English, so I hope the Japanese VA's do them justice. Kind of funny it's the reverse from normal.

Massive hype.

Was so hyped for this when the project was first announced but I was never expecting a RWBY project to get some top tier talent on board.

A RWBY remake by studio Shaft with Japanese staff and I even see Urobuchi's name on there. Uhmm....okay. I guess for now I'll remain optimistic with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Let's go!!! It's been god how many years since I stopped watching any RWBY (since post-Monty RWBY just straight up sucks).
Now let RT learn how Shaft-senpai (a.k.a a real japanese anime studio) do things....

Welp, there goes the "RWBY is/isn't an anime" meme. I can see it dying before my very eyes

On one hand, I like RWBY. It's not great, but it's far from terrible either, IMO. Haven't watched it since Volume 5 originally came out on YouTube though. Plus Void_Chords for the OP? The band who did the Princess Principal OP and which features a musician from my favorite Touhou doujin music circle? Heck yeah! I love seeing them get more work

On the other hand, and I know this is gonna be very controversial, I do not like Urobuchi's work. He seems like a great guy, don't get me wrong, but it's just not my cup of tea, personally. Same can be said of Studio Shaft. Only thing I've really been wowed by in terms of Shaft was one of the Kid Icarus Uprising ONA shorts. Still, while both of their participation makes me a bit cautious, I will reserve judgement until I actually see the anime. Maybe it (and the upcoming Madoka movie that I'm probably gonna watch with my roommate who is a huge PMMM fan) will change my views on both of them?

Small correction to MAL rewrite though (unless something has changed in this adaptation or since I last watched RWBY) - IIRC, the Faunus are not "hybrids". They're just a different humanlike race that happen to be distinguished by having animal ears or tails. At-least, I think so, anyway. Definitely gonna have to double-check that though

Cast makes it almost painful that I will deliberately ignore this show lol. Also, I don't see anything strange in this, Shaft was already working on an adaptation of the all-female action figure franchise last year. I don’t know if this is due to the need for money, but this is the second their consecutive adaptation of the media franchise.

Well, the same anime as X-Men or Batman. I don't know how the final show will turn out, it looks like they put quite a lot of money into it. But your franchise doesn't become an anime because you commissioned an anime adaptation from the Japanese. Also, I don't quite understand why you listed Gen as the screenwriter. The script will be written by the current writer of Psycho-Pass.

Indeed, the original CGI RWBY cartoon itself will never be an anime (unless its production shifts to Japan as well, but I don't think that's likely). But I don't think people (jokingly or not) who are arguing whether RWBY is an anime or not will not have much to say since, well, there is now an anime that is RWBY. Then again, maybe that will just increase the amount of people who think the original show was an anime too? IDK

Me? I didn't? I said he was working on the show (which he is, as "animation concept", whatever that means) and that I've never been fond of anything he's worked on

While writing is the main aspect of a show that I look for, both when watching, and when criticizing, I can still point towards other aspects of a series if I don't like them (or, in the case of pre-release, if they set off a few red-flags). For the same reason I identified Shaft as a studio whose works I've never liked, the same is true of Urobuchi

I have nothing against Urobuchi or anyone from Shaft as people, I'm just stating that their inclusion raises a few red-flags for me, personally (mainly in regards to animation, since both of them are in animation positions here)

SHAFT doesn't really fill me with hope TBH, I find their animation to be rather hit or miss. Still, judging by the promo art, it looks like this one might be a hit, at least in terms of animation so I guess I'll just have to see how it turns out.

I think you should just look forward to something like the past Lily Bouquet. I doubt that this show will be especially SHAFTy or just CG made by the Japanese.

I only watched volume 1 and half of volume 2 of the original CGI series, i guess i would jave to watch the others to get more context, unless this is a re-adaptation of the first season.
Anyway, i'm excited, i really like the main charater designs.

What a weird announcement and staff. I enjoyed the first few seasons of RWBY when it was about funny school hijinks and cute girls and cute boys doing occasional cool things. When the "story" kicked off, the show's writing took one hell of a nosedive. From what I have heard, it gets even worse and worse. So, I actually think this anime is gonna be a huge improvement.

Japanese voices are superior to the original btw

oh wow, I never expected this getting an anime adaptation. It's quite nostalgic since i watched the CGI animated one like 5 or 6 years ago. I don't know if I still like it up to this day because it gets pretty worse later from what I've heard from some people.

The staff looks packed, even TK is composing the op theme. That's double the points

I might take a look on this one
