I would recommend reading from the beginning as there is a lot of context and characterization cut from the anime. It's really enjoyable so it's worth reading through, even if there are parts you recognize.

I know I'm late to the party here but would echo jendestroy, there is a ton that gets cut that is relevant later. The novels really give a lot bigger picture.
