Why are there so few good male characters in this anime?

Aside from Naofumi and L'arc, the other male characters in the anime are:

+ Evil.

+ Incompetent.

+ Forgettable.

It wasn't the case in the first season with the evil Princess and the Pope breaking the mold when it comes to villainy. But the second season's introduction of a bunch of new female characters while shoving all the other three heroes aside without giving them any character development/redemption is just annoying.

When you compare it with other fantasy anime, this is pretty low when it comes to having a balanced cast. In Overlord, Ainz has a number of both male and female followers and they are all competent. In Goblin Slayer, there are a lot of competent male and female characters, and they all get to shine a bit during the final battle - something the other heroes other than Naofumi certainly didn't. Konosuba doesn't have any notable character outside the MC, but everyone in that anime regardless of gender is goofing around.

this season adapted a very "Poor, unwanted and unacceptable" part of the LN. Thus, it was shortened to 12 episodes and was rushed compared to season 1. (This is my opinion)

A lot of people are telling the next season will put other characters like the other 3 heroes, "Into the spotlight" and is supposedly a 24 episode season(?)[a collective opinion]

Probably because it's a kinda generic Isekai, and most of those have pretty bad male characters. Unless the Isekai is good like Tensura or Mushoku Tensei, then most of the time you can bet most male characters aren't going to be great.

Plus this season was just awful all around so naturally the character writing suffered as well.

I haven't seen season 2 and don't plan to but what you mentioned is one of the main problems I have with the show. Everyone who is not Naofumi or part of his harem is a fool, insane or evil. It is so annoying constantly being reminded what an incredibly perfect person Naofumi is, and watch as people constantly mistreat and oppress him for no goddamn reason.

You asked why. IMO it's one of two reasons. Either A) the author suffers from Main character syndrome. Or B) He wrote the story to pander to people who suffer from main character syndrome.

Well, I guess it’s trying to go for more of a realism approach by showing that if normal people were actually isekai’d they would probably treat it like just a game, which it’s ok for this anime to portray that. Narratively it makes sense, but I’m fine with only have one moral male lead.

Also I like Lark, he’s not bad

The right mindset when watching an anime is hoping that it will break your top 10

Hey hey, let’s not forget about the chad blacksmith who appears in 1/5 of the episodes.
