I was looking back at older seasons and noticed that this became the 2nd most popular Winter 2020 anime after Haikyuu. Thanks to Wayback Machine we can see that it used to be in 6th place. It was also barely part of the 1000 most popular anime of all time when it finished airing and now it's 365th. It seemed pretty niche to me when I watched it so I wonder if something happened that made its popularity skyrocket.

Note that I'm not questioning the rankings (which would be against Anime Discussion Rule #2-e) but genuinely looking for info regarding this anime's apparent rise in popularity in the two years since it finished airing. If you think it should be higher/lower, good for you, but I don't need to know that.

Edit: Thanks for the answers everyone

I can only speak for myself but I discovered this anime through people constantly posting the covers online. The art was so intriguing I wanted to check it out. So my personal guess is that the initial popularity of the manga spread online and drew a bunch more people in

Tia Ballard was why I watched it. She’s a marvellous voice actor. The unique art also drew me in to check it out.

it might of got huge in Japan because toilet bound hanako kun is based on a real Japanese legend known ad hanako aka toilet spirit as for the west I'm guessing it's because of the art and animation

I think this Toilet Bound Hanako is a very popular myth in japan or I just often hear it getting mentioned in other places. what really made me watch this tho is the voice acting of the main girl and the artstyle is sick too

seems like people already gave the most obvious answer regarding its unique visual style, which i thought was pretty dope as well, but looking at your provided link from wayback machine (thanks for sharing that by the way), is it really that surprising hanako kun passed some of those shows in popularity over time? while i liked bofuri, it doesn't exactly stand out, kyokou suiri was incredibly mediocre in every way (in my opinion), darwin's game looks like hot garbage and ishuzoku reviewers is a meme, not the fiercest competition i would say.

I saw the art on Tumblr, watched the anime, and genuinely enjoyed it, so I'm sure others did too. It was one of the best of its season

i thought it was really cute? I get that it's not for everybody, but that's okay. Even if a thing is succesful or doesn't mean it has to be something everyone can enjoy. I wish it got a season two.

Like everyone else the artstyle drew me in, but personally i really like hanako-kun's personality and i do think part of the anime's popularity is due to him

I think a lot more younger anime fans liked it. It came out when I was 12 years old, and a lot of my friends liked it and watched it, but older anime fans I knew, it didn’t really appeal to them. I honestly believe the cute art style is what made it so loved initially. A lot of fans are artists if you take a look into the community and like to have fun with the art style.

it's probably because of the manga. I know that the anime wasn't too interesting but the manga is a lot better, as the story is deeper and the art style is better. It could also be the art style because its more unique than most animes. another thing is probably because toilet is in the title, I bet that made some people curious.

I think it is about Hanako, he is iconic and I think having a popular main character what makes mid animes blow (aka COTE)

Dunno about anyone, but I'm in love so far. The art is beautiful, I love the protagonists, the humor... for its category I'm not surprised it's popular.

The name caught my eye because you don't see toilet in a title every day. The art is gorgeous and has that cozy, spooky-cute vibe you often seen in art or video games. The story's a bit boring but it was also interesting enough I watched it through.
