One of the loudest criticisms I've read online about Tokyo Revengers is how the premise deals with middle school gangs. This was largely scoffed at by most people outside of Japan watching the show because it seems silly to imagine middle school gangsters because we all remember how dumb we were in middle school. But upon researching this topic, middle school gangsters in Japan aren't entirely a far cry from the truth, and it has to do with Japanese laws regarding juveniles.

Japan has interesting laws regarding minimum age of criminal responsibility that tend to protect youths more than other countries. In America, most states have no minimum age. In Japan, however, the minimum age of criminal responsibility is under 14. For this reason, it was easy for middle school kids in Japan to join gangs and be active in gang activities because they couldn't be held criminally responsible.

People weren’t criticising that the middle schoolers were in gangs. They were criticising the fact that 80% of the cast look like grown ass men and not 14 and 15 year olds.

some of them literally criticized about why they are being 16 yo, when l was their age l was bla bla bla. criticized about how unrealistic this show by making a child gang and doing crazy stuff. and also what you saying about why they look old? cause they are, you can literally look at Google rn about Japanese bosozoku, they are 80 or 90 generation look like an old guy riding crazy bike, but many of them are in fact is still in their high school.

just don't underestimate high school dude, maybe in your country they are just dumb child who doing silly thing, but in some country like mine, there are some gang fight between school, they use weapon like machete or knife, and in some fight some of them end up dead.

so for who ever saying this show unrealistic is just stupid, just because it's not happening in your place doesn't mean it's not real.

The author was himself in a bikergang in his Youth, so he nows what he writes about.

How many times have you seen high school students who look like middle-aged men?

Sure, but did you know that a 14 year old is only 2 years different from a 6th grader? Let it sink in.

ins't Tokyo one of the safest cities in the world? Like, the show isn't set in the 80s or 90s, but in early 2000s. This alone is kinda unrealistic since the city is depicted as filled with delinquents and nonsensical violence inherent to power disputes.

but of course this is not an exclusive Tokyo revengers problem.

Huh. Interesting. I was one of the people who dropped it because of the reason you stated above. I might try to pick it up again.
