| 1. The DVD has both Japanese and English audio on there. Is it that hard to press the fuckin audio button on your DVD controller. #2: Are you not aware a lot of our English VAs that does anime do non-anime work. Steve Blum who does Spike Spiegel and other anime voiceover is Wolverine for the X-men. Yet, I still hear people bashing Steve Blum because not only because of his anime work, some people bash him for wolverine and claim the Japanese voice is so much better and said Japanese does X-men better. The Japanese VA that does anime does non-anime American dub also. Like Koichi Yamadera who voice Spike Spiegel (like Blum) happens to did a lot of Disney voiceover. #3: I find "anime should be watch in Japanese because it's original" illogical. What about Afro Samurai? That anime does not have any Japanese audio at all? When this anime was shown in Japan it was shown in English audio with Japanese subtitle. What about anime based on popular Western franchises like Batman: Gotham Knight and Halo Legends. Should we be hearing Batman and Master Chief in Japanese ove English? Wouldn't Batman and Master Chief sound weird in Japanese despite it's an anime because people are use to hearing those 2 in English not in Japanese (unless you watch Batman: TAS in Japanese, and play the Halo game in Japanese). #4: The Japanese do really like our English dub #5: There are dub hater that are pulling double standard. Like they hate English dubs in anime, but they have been playing Killzone 2 in Japanese dub and watching American show like CSI: NY in Japanese dub. Anyone can buy those Japanese dub stuff off of Yesasia.com. To the dub haters: Splinter Cell: Conviction Japanese version has famous VAs voicing the character in the game. Does that mean Splinter Cell: Conviction is so much better in Japanese then English and does that mean Michael Ironside suck as Sam Fisher and Tessho Genda is superior? If you say that, you're a weeaboo and a fuckin Japanese supremacist. Stop acting like you're Japanese, you're way badder then a white dude trying to act black because the white dude listen to gangsta rap and talking street. #6: Fansubs are not reliable this day. Half of them as lousy translations, and half of them are censored (the fansubs are network TV version and are subjected to censorship in other word Japan does censor anime). It's hard to find a fansubs that are uncensored. Even I can't tell which fansub anime are censor or uncut. This is why I'm glad when Funimation licensed the anime, they put up the uncensored subbed anime online. |

Not everybody watches anime on DVD that is too expensive, and only a portion of anime get licensed and sent to America. if you watch an ongoing anime in english dubbed you are almost guaranteed a 100 episode gap and thats if they keep up with the dubbing. 2. I don't bash English VAs, i watched dubbed anime when i was younger without knowing what it was (pokemon, digimon, shaman king, beyblade, yu yu hakusho, dbz, zoids etc) . and when i got older and was introduced to English subbed anime i watched some of those that i enjoyed as a child in English subbed and frankly i liked it better in dubs because of the memories i have of those voices, but other times their voices sound all the same and the yelling sounds forced. I think i used to be one of those people that just bashed english anime because it wasnt original but now i think those memories that we have about those dubbed animes are good and should not be thrown away. but if you do want to learn more about the japanese language and culture, subs is the way to go. 3. From what i have read afro samurai was made by an artist who likes American hip hop and soul music, that sounds like an American voice would be more fitting for it, same as batman and halo like i said about memories about voices. but thats also only like 3 anime out of 3000 that are out there, there are also some anime that take place in america, maybe some of those would be better with english dub 4. I don't know about the Japanese liking English dubbed and they might like it. that's no problem with me there might be dubbed that people like more than subbed. 5. I am more of a listen to something how it was supposed to person, so i don't watch American shows or games with Japanese dub. and i haven't but i would like to try to play some of the final fantasy games which are Japanese with Japanese voice just to know if the experience would change. i believe that it isn't as much as hating dub as knowing that there is a original version out there which makes you feel like you could be missing out on something. 6. Yes Fansubs aren't 100% reliable but they are fansubs, they are subbed by people who don't get paid to do it and want other people to enjoy it like they do. They probably learned Japanese the way i did, by watching fansubbed anime but that doesn't mean everything i know is wrong, you never stop learning. But i have now gotten to a point where i can watch raw episodes and movies and understand everything except for a couple sentences, like if it overlapped with other words and i wasn't able to hear all of it or it is a word that i haven't learned yet.It is true that japan does censor anime but some anime are then censored to be used in dubs for children while others are then censored to be watched by teenagers. and they can be overly censored in dubs for children. compared to the uncut dubs that funimation is putting out for one piece compared to 4kids dubbed that was meant for 8 year olds when one piece would best be suited for teens and up. What fansubs do that dubbed doesn't do is allow us to be exposed to Japanese dialects like kansai and okinawa that dubbed cannot replicate. same with Japanese jokes, puns can not be translated because flower and nose are two different words in English but in japan they are pronounced the same, fansubbers can relay that to us and put a little caption at the top for you to read if you so please to. Japanese references to history or celebrities or old anime references would have to be taken out while in the subbed version you can then look it up. Almost all Japanese holidays and customs are changed to American ones like certain festivals like the obon or 7 5 3 temple visit. or the first temple visit of the year or the first dream of the year are all changed so they don't have to explain it on TV. Music is changed too i loved the Pokemon rap and still do like it but i now know that it was made up because they don't want to translate the ending song. Japanese Idioms are all changed. So with some animes that have to cut and paste so many things that the feeling and the atmosphere of certain characters or the whole series is changed. I have learned a lot about the Japanese language and culture from anime and i love Japanese culture and language and i believe that if i was watching dubs i would not love it because you aren't exposed to the culture that much. |

I'm going to use Skullgirls and Ghost of Tsushima as an example of why the dub vs sub war is stupid and why dub haters are hypocrite as cited by me on another thread. When Skullgirls got a re-released in Japan under the title, Skullgirl: 2nd encore for the PS4/PS Vita, it packed something extra that no western fans would expect: a Japanese dub. And this Japanese dub is not some generic one, this dub packed some high-profile talents like Rie Tanaka, Miyuki Sawashiro, Kana Hanazawa, Daisuke Ono. The US/North American version of Skullgirls on PS4/PS Vita, and I assume Xbox One/Xbox Series S/X, Switch, and Windows PC would get the Japanese dub via a patch. So that means North American fans are able to play Skullgirls with the Japanese dub selected as an option. Oh and Skullgirls isn't the only one where the US/NA gamers can play the game with Japanese dub audio selection. Ghost of Tsushima, another game made by a US developer was another American-made game that came with a Japanese audio dub, again like Skullgirls, Ghost of Tsushima's Japanese dub are professional and have background in anime. And just like Skullgirls, the US/NA version of Ghost of Tsushima comes with the Japanese audio. Now this is where I've said the dub vs sub war is stupid, and this is where Skullgirls and Ghost of Tsushima's Japanese dub inclusion in the US/NA copies of the game exposed the dub hater double standard. This is what I saw from a defunct website that talked about the Japanese dub of Skullgirls and oh boy, I managed to get and salvaged these comments before that website closed down: Oh Jesus, now I have to buy it. Goddamn this is one hell of a cast. I would be sold on HanaKana but Miyuki? Ayacchi? Nao? Sugita? Rie? Asami? Holy wow. The weeb in me is loving this. I don't even care much for the game personally (just ain't my cup of tea) and the Japanese VO is pushing me to buy. Yep, these are from the people whom I assume would normally hate watching anime in English dub now saying they're willing to play Skullgirls (an American-made game) in Japanese dub!!! I saw similar thing being said about Ghost of Tsushima when it comes to Japanese dub from people that are anime fans that hate English dub. What is the point of hating English dubs in anime when these same dub haters said they'll played 2 American made games with Japanese dub??? That really defeat the definition of dub hater!!! |
