Plot Summary

In a Holy Grail War, Mages (Masters) and their Heroic Spirits (Servants)
fight for the control of the Holy Grail—an omnipotent wish-granting device said to fulfill any desire.

Years have passed since the end of the Fifth Holy Grail War in Japan.
Now, signs portend the emergence of a new Holy Grail in the western American city of Snowfield.

Sure enough, Masters and Servants begin to gather...
A missing Servant class...
Impossible Servant summonings...
A nation shrouded in secrecy...
And a city created as a battleground.

In the face of such irregularities, the Holy Grail War is twisted and driven into the depth of madness.

Let the curtain rise on a masquerade of humans and heroes,
made to dance upon the stage of a false Holy Grail.

Having watched plenty of Fate stuff, this special feels a lot like the first episode of Fate/Zero and Fate/Apocrypha in which the maters are all gathered for this Holy Grail War, albeit a fake one here in a city just outside of Las Vegas. Great to see some familiar faces here in Gilgamesh and Enkidu with an epic battle between the two, all while Waver and Flat from the El-Melloi series show up with Flat pretty much doing the same thing Waver did back in Fate/Zero. As for the MC, she doesn't appear until the end as it becomes clear and obvious that a TV series is coming. That was some great stuff, and in the meantime the FGO anniversary panel is coming this evening.

Having sadly never watch any fate (due to content availability), can this one be watch without any prior knowledge or not ? (And by extension the future long anime coming from it) It's look interesting, but knowing that Fate as like a plethora of sequel, prequel, side stories, etc etc, it can be a bit confusing. Thanks you for your inputs

From what I can tell this can be watched without too much trouble.  Most of the background details have been laid out by the older mage who got gunned down and the bugger who killed him.

Long and the short of it
There was a ritual in Japan to gain the holy grail by having a fight between mythic heroes summoned by mages. The winning Mage and Hero team each gets a wish.
Some group in the US has tried to copy the ritual and do the same thing  Near as I can tell they seem to be connected to the US Government. So presumably the goal is to get a Wish for the US Government.

This new ritual is either flawed or changed (I'm not clear on that), so only 6 servants are being summoned instead of 7; Archer, Lancer, Rider, Caster, Assassin and Berserker.  The missing one is Sabre
There is an extra class known as Ruler that was hinted at.  Ruler is more of a referee than a contestant.

Part of the fun is figuring out who the different servants are.  They gave us some of them right out; Archer = Gilgamesh, Lancer = Enkidu and Berserker = Jack the Ripper.  That leaves us with Rider, Assassin and Caster as unknown

and of course the post credit gave us a Sabre, despite that class supposedly being excluded.
Mystery Girl is basically a Spanner in the works for whatever the whole plan is.

Outside of the series Gilgamesh and Enkidu are directly connected in human mythology. First Class Frenemies those two,   So the two of them being summoned into the same Grail War is a big deal.  and in case you didn't notice, they are both ridiculously powerful, age of Gods heroes.

Well, yes and no. Ryōgo Narita (author of original LN) made huuuge amount of nods and references to previous Fates or even Nasuverse works in this series. For example Franceska (white-haired girl) casually mentions Satsuki Kurogiri - magus which only appeared in sixth movie of "Garden of Sinners". In my opinion hey should very rarely bother in reading (now watching) this series but it ultimately depends on watcher.

Absolute Demonic Front Babylonia also gives some extra context to their relationship so watching it (or at least being familiar with that chapter in the online game) might make it more meaningful, but probably not absolutely necessary.

Simply put, there's no need to have watched anything else from the Fate franchise since this incarnation is a stand-alone story. You will get a better appreciation for it if you had watched any of the other Fate series (at least with Fate/Zero, one of the Fate/Stay Night series, and Fate/Grand Order Babylonia), but again it's perfectly fine to watch it without having watched anything else in this franchise.

Well that was something wasn't expecting a mini movie. Reluctant Saber (or whoever it is in this iteration) should be interesting.
As for needing watching anything before, well it will up your appreciation and enjoyment of the characters. Gilgamesh certainly was extra gilgameshy haha :D

The first episode came out today, and while Crunchyroll is streaming this show, the first episode is out on the Crunchyroll channel on YouTube. The subbed release of this is coming on New Year's Eve. From the look of things, this TV series will most likely be coming for the Spring 2025 season.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8tCmS5OLq0

The special introduced most of the other players in the fake Holy Grail war that's happening in Snowfield, which is in the Las Vegas area, while Ayaka doesn't appear until the very end. And now, Ayaka is properly introduced here as she came all the way from Japan without knowing the exact reason why she was sent there. All she knows is that she had to be in Vegas for something. And there's that amusing phone chat between Orlando and Caster as they got an unusual bond with each other. So Ayaka ends up inside an opera house where a variant of Hassan attacks her, but is saved by Saber, who appears to be King Arthur seeing that he used Excalibur to destroy Hassan, as well as the opera house. And the episode ends with Hansa, who is revealed to be some kind of cyborg, hitting up the casino. Pretty interesting start here as it lays the groundwork for several mysteries to be solved.

The first episode is coming today on Crunchyroll, and for the first time subbed. I can expect an announcement to come as to when this show is going to air, but I have to think that Spring 2025 is the most likely season.

HMM...I think it would help to have at least watched Fate/Stay Night or Unlimited Bladeworks, and have some knowledge of Fate/Zero.

I've only watched Fate/Stay Night and UBW, The Case Files of Lord El Melloi II and have working knowledge of Fate/Zero and Heaven's Feel

Although, I don't think the ominous implications of the little girl in the hospital would be known unless you know more about the story of "Heaven's Feel" specifically it seems

The Nasuverse, specifically Fate is too large to expect most people to know it all. It's especially hard for non-Japanese because a lot of the stuff was never released outside of Japan.

@GridironOtaku Wait...they aired the special which started the series back in July, air episode 1 today, but they aren't even airing the series in Winter 2025? That's so stupid...just wait to air the first episode when the whole series is ready to go....

I just put this in the Discussion thread index for Winter 2025....ugg

I wouldn't have wasted 2 hours watching this today if I knew that, would have just waited until the season it airs

So now we have to go back and watch 2 hours worth of the prologue...Japan is pretty stupid with their early previews that are 2 years too early

Apparently that was a "preview"...so I guess they are going to start by showing episode 1 again Saturday???

After more than a year since the first episode aired in advance of its broadcast that was originally supposed to have happened last year, the show finally continues.

Episode 2

To start things off here, a theme song composed by the great Hiroyuki Sawano.

Where things pick up, the Holy Grail War supervisor Hansa heads to Las Vegas with Gil, while Ayaka and Richard are in confinement after that incident at the opera house. And then Hansa encounters Orlando and his police comrades, and sets a trap for the police by deploying Assassin. And then Assassin's master Jester walks in and rips off one of the policeman's arm. He introduces himself as a Dead Apostle as he's as strong as a servant, and sends his servant away. But while Jester claims nothing can reach him, Hansa manages to spill coffee on him. The war is in full swing here as Jester is the first master to make his move, all while Hansa wields more power than a supervisor is supposed to. And of course, Gil is being his usual self that he is in the other Fate shows.

Well, this looks like a chaotic mess that breaks the rules with every character, and no one seems to have a grasp of how to manage things. Which is probably someone's plan.

So, assassin just wants to end this thing, too bad she ended up with an actual Vampire for her master

Ayaka is being used as a magic conduit for Saber. She might legitimately not be his master, more of an inbetween to funnel mana to Saber while the real master is someplace safe. Somewhat typical of Einsberg tactics, they have a thing for proxies. Which brings up the question of Who Saber is talking to. The real Master or someone else.

Ending Animation gives us a look at everyone...curious about the Horse

Episode 3

Lord El-Melloi II is now alerted that a something strainge is going on and that this Holy Grail War is going on is a fake seeing that it hasn't even officially started. And then Hansa and Jester have their fight spilling out into the streets as Hansa continues to do something that goes beyond his job as an overseer. Through this fight, Hansa realizes that the dead apostle is after the Holy Grail. Flat just so happens to be there and is looking at the matter himself. And El-Melloi is starting to piece everything together seeing that Gil is one of the servants, all while he sees that a Saber has been summoned. Something is definitely strange here seeing that if there was a real Holy Grail War, El-Melloi would have known by now, but there are several things going on that shouldn't be happening.

ok....
A Fake Grail war with 6 servants, serving as the catalyst for the Real Grail War with 7 servants.

True Saber being the first of the real set and I'm guessing True Archer at the end there. Not sure what class the one with the Puppets would be.

13 in all.....oh this is a giant pile of chaos isn't it.
Would not be surprised to see a Ruler added to the mix.

also Gil is gonna be Pissed to discover he's being used as the opening act

Episode 4

With a Dead Apostle being a master, that is quite a big threat to the civilians of Snowfield. Francesca shows what kind of monster she is as her torso is a mouth and she attacks Tine and Gil. This Grail War apparently has two Archers, but the other Archer is actually an Avenger. So Gil goes out to deal with Avenger, and then Rider shows up to deal with Avenger and calls him out for attacking a girl. And just when Rider was about to attack both Gil and Avenger, everybody gets teleported to a snowy forest, which is actually an illusion. After that, the Avenger reveals himself as Alcides (which is the birth name of Hercules who is better known as a Berserker) and Rider is Hippolyta, but Gil refuses to reveal his name. And then Richard tells Ayaka his history and that the one who killed him is Pierre Basile, and despite being warned by Ayaka to not out his true name to somebody other than his master, which Ayaka deems herself to be unworthy of it, he does so anyway. So more servants are vealing themselves as there are two Archers in this war, and Rider shows herself all while Richard now reveals his true name to Ayaka.

3 Demi-Gods
1 Divine Construct
something that was enough to give both Gil and Enkidu a shiver.

Episode 5

Here comes the mercenary known only as Sigma, who grew up being a soldier in a wartorn land. He was recruited by Francois to take part in the fake Holy Grail War. And then Hercules is summoned and unlike the Berserker from Fate/Stay Night, this guy starts out being human before his master corrupts him using his command seals and taking on his birth name of Alcides. And then Sigma gets cornered and is told that he has the potential to be a soldier who goes down in history. Francesca and Francois sure are enjoying themselves through all the chaos they have brought on. And then Assassin attacks Sigma and runs into Ayaka with Richard stopping the attack. Quite a lot going on here as it's clear that chaos is part of the reason why this fake war is happening.

And the ending animation has changed to give it a more Vegas feel to it seeing that Snowfield is right next to Sin City.

François Prelati the Alchemist. Not the first time he's been gender swapped for Anime. Come to think of it the last one I saw said something about the Female form being the perfect form of humanity so I wonder if gender change was part of his ideology pursuing Alchemy.

and she summoned herself...that is just wild....wonder what the differences are? Servants aren't the person themselves but a version of them based on how humanity sees them so the two of them might not be as alike as they seem.

The Watcher is something new to me and I'm curious if it's various manifestations can do more than watch and advise. Certainly an interesting batch of people there. I've got a guess on the captain but the others area a mystery.

and then we have Mr. Black....who is basically just collecting lives for the little girl to play with in her coma. Seems to be associated with disease, yet has no specific form...so something legendary but not something human.....The Black Death... maybe something more mythical than that. A Biblical Plague maybe.

Ep 2-3, great fight with the vampire. Reminded me of the fight with Shinobu and Koyomi in the Monogatari movie. Hansa is pretty cool (so are his girls).

Ep 4, nice "abs". Cool heroes this time. I love how every show creates a new loophole (or 2) to bring even more onto the show than the "rules" allow. Hippolyta a little small for a "Amazon", but she's a redhead so I will overlook it.

Episode 6

Ayaka and Richard meet up with Enkidu to form an alliance with the Lancer servant, and Richard must prove himself with a battle. It turns out that Richard can use something like a tree branch as a sword, using that to unleash Excalibur. Of course, seeing that it's just a tree branch that Lancer easily blocks it, but he proved his strength to form an alliance with Enkidu. Assassin ends up tagging along as well as the three servants form an alliance until the three threats have been dealt with, but Enkidu remains in the forest until his master's safety can be assured. They set up a base of operations, and they meet up with Sigma. In the meantime, Flat continues to dig around and finds something suspicious going on in the hospital. So now that Saber, Lancer, and Assassin have formed an alliance, there are threats out there that need to be dealt with as something sinister is definitely brewing.

And in related news, Richard I has arrived early to the NA version of FGO. He would have debuted in January 2027 had it followed the Japanese timeline, but he's here already.

Episode 7

Here comes Halri Vorzak, who was ready to die but was given a new purpose by the Einzbern homunculus Philia. She is the granddaughter of Odd, who was killed by Kiritsugu in Fate/Zero, and more specifically in the background episode he is the guy who killed his mentor that led him to becoming the schemer that he was in that show. Sigma reveals that his servant is the comedian Charlie Chaplin, a Lancer servant. And then Halri and Philia go out to destroy the workshop. Halri was pretty much just there to complete the master roster and she has shown that she's more than worthy of being a master after setting the workshop on fire. But Halri gets cornered and was about to use a command seal to bail her out, but before that Francois causes the ground to fall as they need to ensure that the war continues. And then at the end Sigma reveals that the US Government orchestrated this fake war and everybody is seen as just pawns. Tension is building now that all the masters and servants have emerged in Snowfield, and it's going to lead to even more sparks flying.

@MenchiK1 Sub seemed fine, just Buffering like every five minutes. No problem with any of the other shows on Crunchyroll just Fate.

They don't say it out right but her Posing during the fight is a dead give away on who she is. Can only assume she is here because of Gil and Enkidu.

Who ever is behind this whole thing, it is rapidly spiralling out of control. The fact that she is here, unrestrained and uncontrolled is a huge problem.

and WTH is that Berserker?

Works fine now but it literally said "There is no Sub but you can watch this episode dubbed" weird.

Anyway they are summoning mecha now? This fate going in every direction, probably exactly what you should expect if the US government was in charge.

There are various Golems and Constructs in different mythologies; Talos for example or considering the rules for servants I suppose even Pinocchio could become a servant.

but that thing is a right Beast of a machine

Gonna need to dig into my "Encyclopedia of things that never were" to figure out what this one might be.
