Well, the OP song is kinda catchy for this show.

Looks like this anime is taking a deep dive into magic mechanics including the usage of magic swords. This includes having Oliver participating as a member against his opponent Nanao. Not sure I feel about Chela in this anime yet. Something tells me that smile of hers may be hiding something.

I do notice that the how takes its magic context seriously, and probably will get more complex later on.

Where do you even find episode 2? It isn't on crunchyroll.
There's something called being able to understand Japanese/living in Japan and watching the raw episode (which ended in Japan like 12 minutes ago btw).

Michela first doing Oliver a favor by wanting to duel that red haired guy, then helping Nanao and lastly helping to find Pete's book with Oliver. Such a good and capable girl.

Oliver is also someone refreshing to have as an mc so far.

Ok, ngl, the 1st EP is nothing that impressive. The 2nd EP however, seems pretty solid.

Also, like how others have mentioned, OP is lit AF!

The duel looked okay, didn't look as impactful as it seemed to Nanao. Good for her though, she found her match? New girl seems troublesome but I don't think she's a villain.

I liked the 3D in the OP. The music is good too.

"I don't want to kill you, and I don't want you to kill me!"
"Why?"
What do you mean why lol?
Tho there's probably some important reason they acted like that during the fight. I'm interested in learning more about Nanao at least.

Episode title screens are interesting in this
At 22:03 (this episode's title) it's written ソードアーツ (soodo aatsu) - "Sword Arts" and in the back it's 魔法剣 (mahouken) - "magic sword"
Then at the very end (next episode title) it's ソルジャー (sorujaa) - "Soldier" and in the back it's 死兵 (shihei) - "death soldier"
The first episode was called セレモニー (seremonii) - "Ceremony" with 入学式 (nyuugakushiki) - "school entrance ceremony" in the back
So in the background are the titles written with japanese native terms but with some nuances

Nanatsuma fridays. Lets gooo.

Love the OP, really conveys the sense of magic and wonder that this world has

Even better episode than episode 1. Animation was already good, but it looked even better. The nanao and Oliver fight was solid, just about as intense as I imagined it.

Lot of world building covered today establishing just how rich and complex a magical society this one is. Good introduction to some magical concepts, classes and aspects of the school like the dungeon and how dangerous it can be at night.

JC staff have done a good job omitting some details that made volume 1 quite long and I’m ok with it. Took me 3.5 hours to read, so I’m not complaining about them skimming thru a few things.

Mommy dommy vanessa and Ophelia introduced. Voiced by Kayano Ai as well! Love how good she looks in the anime and they convey the seductress vibe so well. Cyrus looks about 50 tho lmao.

Can’t wait for next week

Well, that's not really my point. But anyway, apparently Stark does understand enough Japanese to watch the raw episode wherever he may be and understand most of it.

Anyway, back on topic, after watching this ep, I would say this episode is much better than the 1st ep with the setup in the 1st ep now out of the way. Definitely curious about what other craziness lies in store for this school.

That dude and dark-skinned blondie does know about this "SCHOOL".. don't know if it's a right term though, as they seem kind of too flexible with the minimum age requirement to fit the criteria of a "student" here... but okay whatever, so it makes sense they tagged with the nerd.

But lol, look what that eventually lead up to. We know that hot senpai would later become an ally of our mc, though fine let's just see how they gonna get out of this mess.

Oh my, some of the visuals in the ending and opening are fantastic, they're pulling all the breaks. Very entertaining episode, loved it. Though Livermore somehow aged heavily in the anime lmao. He's supposed to be 20, and his LN look certainly does look around 20, but his anime look was err... More like 40 lol. It's kind of sad since I thought his LN look was quite cool tbh.

As expected, episodes 2 continue its course through the prologue, accumulating more hints about the future story as we had in the novel, but without rushing through the prologue to reach the main story. I suppose we'll reach the end of the main story prologue by episode 4 or 5 at this rate, for 3 volumes in total covered by the anime.

Ooho I seem to have misjudged it a little in the 1st ep... They should've named it episode 0, as it was just for introduction purpose.

I can see where this is going with the darkness but still I am not impressed. I did a little background research and found out that all the main characters in this anime are average.
Oliver : got only the wits going for him, his strength is not a strong suit.
Nanao : the dumbest character ever.
..............
Well thats it I don't want to spoil any further. And that Cyrus guy is a 20 year old but looks with a aging syndrome [>_<]

Squeepigs are rutting. Most interesting episode. Looks like there swords are alive in the sense they can potentially overcome the swordmaster. MC clearly not an ordinary student with his shadow. Then we have the 4th and 5th years appearing after dark. Cliff hanger moment. If I was writing this show Id have our first years annihilate the 4th and 5th, go on a demon style berserk rampage and then destroy the world.

Which is why they dont let me tell stories. Or direct anime, in fact they keep me at bay with barge poles.

I'm really getting into this show, looks like many treats are in store

As I dont know Japanese I cant comment on what they are actually saying, but as far as I can tell in Kenshin they are taking the pee on subs with the yoda style speak translation, as when he talks it dosent seem different to the tens of thousands of other lines ive listened too without understanding them which didnt get yoda style translation

As far as I can tell, she (and Rurouni Kenshin if he sounds similar, I suppose, though I didn't watch it) is just using archaic polite language as a "look, it's a samurai" speech tick like degozaru. Nothing about it suggests reversed speech.

Nanao consistently frightens me with her lack of concern for her opponent's well-being, instead focusing solely on her own disappointment at not being able to continue.

The lesson involving silkworms strongly resembles a class from Hogwarts' Care of Magical Creatures. I'm relieved that Oliver addressed Katie's behavior, as her excessive care for magical creatures, even at the expense of others and herself, was starting to annoy me.

The recent revelation sheds light on the headmistress' address in the first episode. It's quite absurd that the public is completely accepting of a school built on a labyrinth that transforms it into a hazardous environment. What's even more astonishing is that the dangers seem to arise from other students who are literally attempting to harm their own underclassmen.

Oliver and Nanao had a very intense duel. After seeing her battle scars it should be apparent to Oliver that Nanao blade has killed people. She's absolutely seen love combat and experienced hellish conditions on the battlefield. Nothing like any of those ordinary students have seen. Oliver struck something within her during their duel. The conditions at this school are far from ideal, with every class being aimed to put you in impossible situations. It should come as no surprise a large portion of students don't survive at all. These teachers definitely don't so much in the way of helping and their individual classes almost counter each other. I couldn't imagine going from one class to the next where each teacher tries to teach the same general subject but their own way. One teacher saying to hone your sword skills the next saying wands are all you need, talk about confusing. On top of this labyrinth that encroaches upon the school at night. With upperclassmen whom want to rip you apart there's no safe haven anywhere at this school. I'm with Katie saying I don't accept what this school says is good enough. Her trying to safe all the worms was very sweet. She's got a good heart and I'm glad Oliver cheered her up.

Glad you noticed this and it is deliberate. There is big theme in the story how mages don't not think like regular humans. They value results and study magic above all else which justifies the sacrifices and risks taken to achieve that. This also why a lot demi-human aren't give rights and goes back how some characters like Katie find it hard to a fit in at Kimberley if not magic world in general despite being mages themselves.

decent episode.

a lot of the close up face shots of the Kimberly gang were great:
  - Chela's wink
  - Guy's goofy face on the floor when eavesdropping
  - Pete NOMS that sandwich real well
      - uptight mouth face when concentrating during the Magical Biology class
      - panicked face in the evening
  - Nanao tears, slurps
  - the smile Katie shows and when she is flustered. banger scene in the infirmary.
      - the sunset lighting through the windows is chef's kiss

the close ups on Ophelia and Vanessa were good too.
  - amusing choice to show Vanessa licking her lips when hearing the students failing a cocoon
  - the emphasis on Ophelia's eyes when inviting Oliver Pete Chela to come closer

the last section of the OP animation was done really well.
I love how Nanao was animated when deflecting the wind spheres and running towards that birb monster using the elevated debris as stepping stones.

Just finished! The pacing in this episode was a lot better compared to the first. Loving the ominous yet fantastical vibe the OP gives off. Oliver and Nanao's duel was well-done, especially in the following scene. The dynamic between our main cast is just as cute as it is in the novels. They're also really hitting it home for anime-onlies that mages do not think like regular humans, that their world is cut-throat and merciless compared to that of a nonmagical's. Nicely done!

Ophelia and Cyrus appearing at the end made for an exciting cliffhanger. Cyrus is in his fifth year, so that makes him about 20 or so. I see some folks saying that he looks too old, but I think he looks fine here, spot-on with his novel illustration. Given what he specializes in, I expect him to look a bit disheveled. And if it's about his beard, that's ridiculous. I had a full beard at 20 and some of my male friends had them ranging from 15 to 17 years of age.

As a fan of the light novel series (currently halfway through volume 8), I'm thoroughly impressed with this show's presentation thus far. I hope that J.C. Staff keeps it up and gives us quality comparable to DanMachi IV, which was undoubtedly their best season yet. We'll have to wait and see.

Was never into magic type stories personally, but I can see the parallels between this and Harry Potter. With that said, it was wrong to have so many characters as the main cast. After seeing the hippy witch trying to save the life of the bugs. It left a bad impression that they may flesh out the other characters to be one dimensional. Except for Samurai gal and Oliver.

In terms of a story, it's interesting how they set up a lot of loose ends. But juggled with a cast of six leads and Oliver's secret. I would be more inclined to focus on Oliver if given the chance. Seeing how he still hasn't made an impression in the series thus far. Anyway, it was a solid episode not too bad and not too good.

Lmao definitely some cringe dialogue in this series. Especially the monologuing during that duel. There's obviously something wrong with the degorazu loving samurai otaku. Misses starts crying during the fight and then is like plz lets fight for real next time. There's clearly more to that but it's also kinda hard to not cringe a little with her fight to the death fetish or whatever.

The OP was pretty cool tho. Although I have to say when I saw the big boob lady in the OP I was like "yup typically female villain character in edgy anime" and look what we get at the end of the episode. Just a classic.

There's a lot of melodrama even for anime, and as other noted Nanao's why just came across silly, but it's pretty fun. I like the relationships the main six are building. Points to Miss McFarlane for being the only character ever with ojou rolls to also be a good person.

It's like I am reading the first books of Harry Potter.

Nice 'world building' to establish the rules and logic of their world/academy.
That rift that formed between Oliver and Nanao was kind of unsettling. Maybe Oliver sensed something deeper than those 'battle scars' on Nanao are saying. They might not only be skin deep after all since it feels like Nanao is looking for her death on the battlefield.

Looks like the 3 of them or in for some senpai introductions

Decent second episode! I do wish they’d have expanded on the spell teacher as that scene in the novel was in great contrast to sword arts’ Master Garland but whatever — maybe next week’s episode she’ll get her due. Other than that, solid work, again they hit all the right story beats. Maybe things like Oliver scolding Nanao could’ve been better as here is looks flippant but it works. I like the way they realized the intense scenes when the hallways started to be encroached. That had a neat air of scary.

I did enjoy the Oliver vs Nanao scene, very well done and I like the way they realized the illustration when they were clashing.

I can see why some people are comparing this to Eminence, it seems like our mc here has some sort of hidden persona + his own shadow garden perhaps? Well I do wanna see a serious Eminence story so maybe gonna stick with this series till the end.

Decent episode, still has some weird shits going on, but eh I enjoy it. I do wonder if this is actually a "magic school battle harem" or not tho? It has an equal gender casts, but the mc seems like rizzing all main girls?

Oh the oped sounded better than i anticipate. I feel like the pace is even slower for this time, but i guess this is where to take your sweet time very well. Appreciate 'em. Tho i do like where the duelling part happens. Pretty on-point with their interactions even if its still holding a very big mystery to both side. Don't know why the animal-loving girl kinda be unnecessary especially our mc doing a massive rizz with the girl. I also can't tell if the labyrinth part with the upperclass folks were a serious matter or they just wants to do some fun shit, to the point that shall i consider it for a better vibe or nope because the cliffhanger really can't help it imho. But oh well, by looking at all the first-day encounter problem, all in all, welcome to the spellblades magic school system, you guys!

So I'm guessing Nanao & Oliver were being "consumed by magic" during their battle with each other? Or are we to guess Nanao is a reincarnated being?; because that would explain why she was foreseen to have killed so many people in her past lives(?).

I'm still figuring out if watching this anime adaptation is worthwhile as a seasonal watch given everything still feel basic though we get an overall idea on how Katie's beliefs may contradict or be incompatible with this school's indifferent norms & strict rules.

I wonder if those seniors are meant to be the Big Bad's assistants though I assume this is all a test for we know magic school stories will have the Random Test setups.
