Protagonist reject his friend because it represent what he wants to reject. Its pitiful. Even if he dosent like his father, he must truly like other parts of his past life, like her child-hood friend. I thought the way he reject her is that because he really wants to be proud of himself, like "hey, i did the best choice".

But now that i see the scene again, maybe its different. Maybe he realizes that he has chosen a path that maybe he shouldnt have taken. Maybe he dosent want her to be with him on that path. And maybe thats the reason he says that to her. Like to driven her away from him. Also, he couldnt be able to say anything. Probably because he dosent know how to say, i love u too, but u can not stay and i can not go back. He really must think they will kill him if he goes back.
