I'm really enjoying this anime, but I'm confused about the plot.

So, has the cult appeared from Sids imagination? And is he unaware that it all actually exists, and that he just thinks everyone is still pretending? I'm so confused

They are not born from his imagination. They actually existed, Its just a coincidence that his bullshit turned out to be a fact. He isnt aware of the latter part and only thinks 7 shades are buying his bullshit and playing along to keep him entertained.

Yeah cult is a bunch of whiny babies compared to an atom bomb anyways. Might as well be a pretend play thing

There is still the theory that the whole Isekai part plays in his head while he is in a coma or while his life flashes by after the got hit by Truck-kun.

Would explain why he has godlike powers and why everything happens according to his will.

Basically, Cid is just too oblivious and also doesn’t care enough to actually listen or communicate enough to find out what is actually going on, even when they explain real events that he is physically present for, he just brushes it aside as “pretending” which makes no logical sense and is just ridiculous.

Willful denial due to a total lack of care to put any thought beyond what he wants in this life.

But at the same time, he doesn’t know what he wants and was just going through the motions without care.

He is a terribly written character, the entire show is embarrassingly predictable, and all the “misunderstandings” are due to no communication between the parties and individuals.
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

@ponygobyebye he is overpowered, but not a parody, he is his own brand of terribleness

The author wanted to make Cid funny because of his oblivious attitude, but sometimes that just destroys the depth of the plot. Funny events tickle only when serious events have gravitas. If he is completely oblivious even in serious conditions time after time (a few times is understandable), then that makes the character very shallow.
Or maybe that's the entire point, the MC is just very shallow.

Yeah, a “theory” right… Those are the same people raving on about how Touch Me is actually watching Momonga commit his evil deeds from afar in Overlord, and he’ll come to stomp on him with “righteousness” somewhere down the line

Bunch of shitstains projecting the visage of their former bullies onto fictional character and wanting to watch them fall smh

I think the best way to explain it. Shadow Garden is a cult/church that follows the doctrine Cid lay out for them. Cid is a bored god that has no interest in the world he is in. So he does whatever that amuses him the most.

That's only as much of a theory as it is for literally any Isekai and thus should be dismissed out of hand.

In simple words - Cid doesn't know the Cult actually exists, he just made that story up in front of Alpha. He just thinks that the girls are playing along with his delusional storyline . Whatever enemy he faces, he believes they are some bandits or bad dudes. So in summary, whatever bullshit story he comes up with actually becomes real in that world lol. That's why it's a misunderstanding comedy anime
