| I finally finished reading this volume after putting off reading it for a while now. I quite liked it a lot even though over 70% of the volume involved politics and most of the story was told through Atsuomi's perspective. Atsumoi, even though a despicable human being is quite interesting as a fictional character. We learned a lot about the White Room project and the people involved in it through this volume. Big names like prime minister Kijima and Koenji's' dad showed up in the final volume of Year 2, so it is possible for characters like Yuki, Shiro and the instructors like Suzukake, Ishida and others to show up in future volumes of the main story. Kiryuin Fuuka-senpai is somehow acquainted or related to prime minister Kijima, so she can also make an appearance in the future volumes even after graduating ANHS. Reading this volume changed my perspective on many characters, like Tsukishiro for example. He is even more of a dangerous fellow than what's shown in the Year 2 volumes. It looks like chairman Sakayanagi and Kijima are righteous good-natured people as opposed to despicable politicians like Naoe or Atsuomi who seems to be playing the ambitious villain or anti-hero role. Also, my view of Kiyotaka went from a 10/10 character to an 11/10 after reading this volume. Dude is literally a monster. He is so far above even the other excellent White room students and instructors that even the notion of comparing him to regular students in ANHS seems stupid. From the conversation between Atsuomi and president Amasawa, we learned that Ichika was a test tube baby and her father don't care about what happens to her in the White room or after she graduated it. Now, she also has a younger sibling who's going to join the White room due to her dad's infidelity. Also, Yuki's dad seems to genuinely care for his daughter and from the conversation between him and Kiyotaka, it seems Yuki has a younger sister. From the events that took place in the main story, I'm almost certain that her sister is Tsubaki. I'm looking forward to the reunion between Kiyotaka and Yuki now that he himself expressed the feeling of wanting to meet her again when taking to Tsubaki in Year 3 volume 1. Also, Shiro seems like a cool dude. He was like "I've had enough of this White room bullshit" and decided to drop out voluntarily even though he can survive longer lol. He seems to be the second most strongest character skill wise in the CotE series. Hopefully we get to see him again in the main story. This is just a guess, but I think that Kiyotaka's new classmate Shiraishi Asuka might somehow be acquainted with Shiro, since she is looking at Kiyotaka like she's reminiscing about someone else she knew a long time ago. She's also super interested and actively flirting with him to gauge his reactions. Lastly, I'd like to talk about the head instructor Suzukake and Atsuomi's view on Kiyotaka. They are absolutely convinced that he lacks emotions completely. But from Kiyotaka's monologue while he's in Atsuomi's car after meeting Yuki, we see that it's all an act to catch Atsuomi off guard in the future and he has his own plans to sharpen his fangs as he put it and counteract whatever fate that Atsuomi has in store for him in the future. So, he does seem to have some semblance of emotions. Oh I forgot to mention, I was truly surprised to know that Kiyotaka's mom Mika was a prostitute worker for politicians. I was hoping for his mother to at least be someone with a decent character, oh well. A child born of a despicable father and an unloving mother, abandoned in an experimental facility since birth for 14 years but still managed to survive and master the toughest curriculum of the White room, truly a genius know as the White room masterpiece but lacks fundamental human emotions like love, joy, anger or sadness. As Suzukake put it, we all hope for such a miserable but excellent existence to find true happiness before he dies. Hopefully the author can write the story in such a way that the connections he formed during his high school years with Horikita and the rest of the students will eventually lead him to finding that true happiness in the future. If he pulls some bs towards the end of the series and end Kiyotaka's life or something like what the author did to Aqua in the Oshi no Ko series, I'm gonna be extremely pissed for a long time. I don't trust Japanese authors to properly end their works, but I can only hope that Kinugasa-sensei is different and can do a better job. That's all my thoughts regarding this volume. I'm totally looking forward to reading more CotE Year 3 volumes in the future. |
