Personally I prefer Season 2 by a landslide, but I did enjoy Season 1 too.

The first season was very action packed, the second season had too much dialog.

First season was action packed with some revenge plot + Askeladd was quite a good character, while Thorfinn was annoying little brat + action ehhh I'd rather not speak about action as searching accurate stuff is an impossible mission [Yes I know there's one anime which have little historically accurate fights - it is in my PTW]

Second season was more chilled, with some little nice action, Thorfinn has became finally a good character maybe not as good as Askeladd, the everyday routine of early medieval life as a slave was nice to watch, although I would nitpick about the settlement etc.

In overall both of the seasons were great and I rated both of them as 10/10, there are places in which you can nitpick on historical/archeological accuracy etc. and maybe for other stuff but these flaws doesn't disturb the joy of watching. Personally I'd pick second season as I remember it better than the first one.

@Serafos I checked up your MAL and I couldn't find Vinland Saga on your anime completed list so, how do you claim season 1 is better when you actually haven't watched Vinland Saga.

@Zettaiken I rated season 1 9/10 and season 2 10/10. Season 2 is just completely on a whole different level for me. The character development and storytelling are just top-notch plus it genuinely made me cry.

I liked Season 2 more. It had several wacky or plain naive moments, but it was way more enjoyable to watch than the first season. No matter if a scene had action or not, Season 2 managed to harmonize everything to satisfy both fans of good looking action and people who prefer slower, more story-driven moments.

Season 2 for me, Thorfinn’s transformation is just amazing, if I don’t know both teenage and adult thorfinn, I wouldn’t recognize him both physically and personality wise as same person. He went from angry and revenge driven person to a pacifist. He become such charming guy. I also like Snake’s character, a formidable fighter but compassionate and reasonable individual but not without flaws.

s1 bored me just like every Wit Studio anime except After the Rain
s2 is super ugly, I just saw one panel of the manga and it was a billion times better; I also have some issues with the writing. s1 wins by a small margin

First half of season 2 was very boring, second half reached a similar niveau like the first season. So I prefer the first season.

Askeladd was the real protagonist of the first season. Thus, it will never get better obviously.
Btw, Thorfinn changing from a dead inside vegetable to a naruto-pilled messiah was as ridiculously fast and unconvincing as Canute turning from a girly sob to a violent sociopath in a blink of an eye.

Season 2 for me.

Season 1 was like a 7 whereas season 2 was more like an 8.

The story told in season 2 was more original and the use of music was amazing.

Season 2. It is from that point VS was Thorfinn's journey, as well as having probably the best character development I've come across in anime.

Please excuse my boring answer ahead....

Both are excellent, I enjoyed them both so much, each have different "flavor" from each other I couldn't really choose which one is better :)

Both a great seasons. I like S1 more because Im an action guy, S1 has a very good ending, and its where everything started. S2 is slower but still very enjoyable to watch though.

Both seasons are good for different reasons, almost like 2 different shows. But I like season 1 more.

@MillerEvans23 Timeskip for nothing? Was there any development in those 3 years? He didn't change an inch during that time. As I said, that was just uncomfortably fast

I’ve only watched both once, but I think for now season 1. Could change on a rewatch. 1 had Askeladd who was a fantastic character, and the story was great. More action too. That being said, season 2 was also incredible and my favorite anime of last year. “ I have no enemies” is probably the best scene in the entire anime and the character development in 2 was immaculate.

Season 1 if craving for frequent bloody violent action scenes. Season 2 for the significant character development Thorfinn undergoes.

Honestly, both have different directions for their storytelling when deconstructing the glorification of Nordic conflicts that work really well for the series.

I really want to pick the "can't decide" option. But if you hold me at gunpoint, I'd have to say Season 1.

Mostly because I was not expecting much and was then blown away by it. I had high hopes for Season 2, and its weak points bothered me a bit more.

Neither of them are perfect, but both of them are amazing and near and dear to my heart.

Season 1 easily. In season 1, the whole 'WAR is le BAD' schtick was more tolerable.
I didn't like Planetes second half either. Maybe this guy just knows how to start stories and not how to continue and end them.

Season 1 was a good meal, while season 2 provided good digestion. Each adds to the whole experience and both are great. But there are lots of great shows, it's only after s2 it became something special for me, so in that regard I prefer s2.

Season 2. I honestly did not like the first season that much and was hesitant to pick up the second season. I ended up loving season 2 and looked forward to it every week when it aired.

2. It has actual characters I give a shit about at that point.

For season 1 like...Thors dead, only really thought Askeladd was cool during the climax of his death. Everyone else (sides Thorkell and secondary antags since they are just unexplored yet got a GLOWUP season 2. Actually made me like Canute and Thorfinn, too like holy shit the development.

It’s hard to say both are amazing but i’d choose season 2 since it shows it doesn’t need action to be good and I think it’s the second season that makes it really stand out from other action shows.

season 2 is better in terms of character development, growth and great moments. season 1 is better if you want badass action scenes and great story telling.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.
Feeling half happy, half sad.

I'm not into farming slices of life so I preferred season 1 by a lot, and I won't be watching the rest.

Good second season though.

Voldemort above me nailed it.

Season 2 definitely. It did way more for me in terms of enjoyment, vastly elevated Thorfinn by giving him more to do beyond seeking revenge, and it even made me appreciate season 1 more than I already did.
Don't let others ruin things for you. Even if a toxic fan pisses in your cereal, you could just get another bowl of cereal.

Whoa this is a topic I've been lurking for.

I'm a huge fan of both seasons, kinda find it hard to vote for either of them. Season 1 was a hit because it brought me into the series + Thorfinn with the double daggers goes unbelievably hard. Huge fan of the mangaka and the anime.

With that being said I feel like I lean towards the second season for a lot of different reasons. The main one being the absolute vibe that was portrayed. Following Yukimura-sensei on twitter really gave me a fresh perspective of what anime and manga could be. Without his live commentary on the 2nd season I think I wouldn't have the proper outlook on what the season was trying to produce. I'm thankful to him and to MAPPA for delivering an experience that was disconnected from the regular. In general I'm thankful that Vinland Saga has gotten the attention it deserves, it may be on the mature side but I think most anime watchers should check it out if they're interested.
