She was the strongest to represent the school.

It forced her to interact with others in public, so they all could see that she was powerful, but not evil.

And the prize was something related to dark magic, which is like her own magic.

Yumiella is super strong having the only person with level 99! Just for that reason, the school academy let her participate in the tournament!

This would put her in that people's radar, so that when she was included in the team to murder the evil king, people would know who she was.

Old topic, but interesting question.
The only thing Ronald said on the topic is that he really wants her to participate, but nothing about the reasons.

There was no need to represent the school, because the school already had 4 strongest participants that would win everything (Alicia&co).
And in the first place Ronald doesn't have any reason to worry about schools performance, because he is there only temporary to keep Yumiella happy.

There prize amulet is irrelevant, because as Ronald said he would've given it to her anyway, it was her gift from the king.

There was no reason to justify her inclusion in the maou kill squad any further, because all nobles already knew she was 99 and had a dragon.

If he wanted to give her a stage to appear strong but not threatening, that was a massive miscalculation, and Ronald is pretty smart.

My guess is that he just wanted give Alicia&co an extra boost of motivation to level and train. If they won the tournament, they could've become full of themselves while still being 40 levels short of actually challenging maou.

Another reason could've been to give her a stage to be super threatening to nobles. Since unruly noble faction already failed to win her over, now they have to think twice before picking any fights with the king.

Yet another reason could be that he wanted to make her prominent so she can later be decorated as saint instead of Alicia. Even though in the moment neither Yumiella nor the king are interested in that route.
