Do I need to watch the TV show to understand this movie or is it standalone?

I would suggest having seen at least the first half of season 1 to know most of the characters there already, because they skim over that in the film a bit. Aside from that it isn’t absolutely necessary. I have friends who hadn’t seen the whole season when they watched the movie and they enjoy it and understood regardless.
If you want the best viewing experience though, doesn’t hurt to have seen it imo. (I’ve seen the movie in Japan)

Just saw it. From my POV, this is a glorified recap of events from first half of the 1st season, with nothing meaty added. I spent most of the time watching it, wishing to be watching the 1st season once more.

Still, it might be enjoyable on it's own, but the 1st season it's just much better.
