So... I have an issue. And that issue is called "all of the manga 'related entries' for this series are sorted in the database by JP releases and compilations and I have no idea how they all correlate to the compilation and omnibus sets for EN release like at the US Amazon".

Like... that honestly looks like absolute hell if I tried to figure this out on my own. Not to be rude, as a relative newcomer, but these anime have kind of reputation for not having the same effect as the manga, so I actually want to read all the manga first, at least all of the ones that have been adapted as a priority. Prior to organizing this, the books that are higher on my priority list to buy are:

  • Gyo & Tomie, as I not only already know they got adaptations, but they also match Uzumaki with the deluxe 3-in-1 hardcover sets, very nice. I'm guessing those are his "big" stories, since they're all matching and have their own anime?
  • Upgrading Dissolving Classroom, not because I need another copy but because my personal preference is hardcover, I also think I see an episode referencing them anyway too?
  • Souichi, because I've seen his name often enough to know he's a recurring character
  • and the Cat Diary one, because as a former-cat-parent I think I'll really enjoy the creativity in those stories, I think I heard they were inspired by his wife's cats or something, sounds relatable

So like, if I wanted to add the EN books that both this series and this series, which books would I need to be sure to pick up?

Just going by episode titles and the covers/names of database entries, I think I'm looking at having to buy Tomie, Souichi, Smashed, Alley, Frankenstein, Fragments of Horror, Lovesick maybe??, Shiver, maybe Tomb??

...Did I miss any? Get some wrong? For someone who knows his works better, maybe went through this already or already owns the same EN books I plan to, I could really use some help plotting this all out. Please, someone more informed, just solidify the whole list for me so I can go from there 👍

@Kampos GD, someone delivered! Thank you!

"Gyo: 19 chapters, badly adapted on a terrible movie" - oof, yeah, had a feeling. I mean, tbh I haven't heard the best about most attempts to adapt Junji Ito, to be fair. But the worst I've heard of is probably the Gyo movie and maybe a live-action Uzumaki made years ago with what I assume is unintentionally hilarious editing. Of course, having not read Gyo myself yet, I'll be making a note to read it first and try not to let the anime's reputation cloud my view when reading the story.

I appreciate the full list you gave me! This is really the tactical approach I needed for what I wanted to do. Especially pointing out works that have been adapted but not in EN releases yet, that was a great touch. That was all probably quite a bit of work, so thank you!

At the very least, I already own and have read a copy of Uzumaki, that I picked up on a tri out to a bookstore with a friend. The same can be said for Dissolving Classroom, but it was a copy a friend picked up for me since she works at a nerdy trade-in store, so it was really just luck of the draw that that one turned up. It was the paperback copy though, so regardless of if it's been adapted, I've been planning on replacing it eventually. So I still need to buy everything but Uzumaki, BUT I know which ones I need to prioritize for what reasons, at least, so there's that.

Edit: I found scanlations of the volumes with the missing chapters you told me about, and their entire here on MAL. Layers of Fear looks to be a one-shot, but while I can find where I can read it, it doesn't seem to have a MAL entry, unless I'm mistaken? Plz link me if I'm just being blind

@MoonSpider Layers of Fear is here

Also, I've read almost everything from Junji Ito and love making lists, so on my Manga List here on MAL I've listed each chapter on each entry. I think it only works on a PC tho, mobile version sucks

Small update since I can:

I was able to pick up copies of both Soichi and Cat Diary recently, so I now have that plus Uzumaki and Dissolving Classroom in my personal library. Baby steps since only half of them all have touched adaptations so far, but once again I appreciate being given the information so I know which manga to prioritize in the future. Logging them still looks to be something of a pain, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to them.
