Very nice poster. Really faithful to her original manga design. I wonder if the anime will also include, well, graphic content of all sorts, known from the manga. ;p

The art style seems cartoon-ish in a bad way. and the font with illogically variable in width is nonsense.
You can read a short comment from the original author here. Kind of chill / objective comment.

You just said what I wanted to say. I read the original pirated manga (in Chinese, traditional characters) when I was in middle school.

@RobertBobert More faithful adaptation to the original manga unlike Mamoru Oshii's 1995 movie which is a classic but wasn't faithful to the manga.

@Andreapova I don't know how deeply I'm willing to invest in this, as cyberpunk has never been a particularly favorite genre for me.

I can't say with 100% certainty 'cause we still don't know what the plot of this is gonna be; but I'm willing to bet that it'll be fine to watch this on its own.

Basically, the GitS anime franchise so far has 3 separate timelines (Mamoru Oshii movie duology, Stand Alone Complex, and Arise). And seeing as how this doesn't seem to have a subtitle that's associated with any of those timelines, it's looking like this might be its own thing. The Major's design suggests that this anime might follow the original manga more closely than its predecessors.

@Andreapova Are you suggesting that I won't pay much attention to this show if I'm not a big fan of the genre?

@Orororurando How big of a difference are these timelines? Are they just different arcs or are they like three different works with the same characters?

It's more of the latter. Each timeline has its own set of conflicts that the characters deal with, and there isn't much overlap between them (aside from maybe a couple of callbacks/references here and there, mostly coming from Arise which is a pseudo-prequel). The Major herself largely feels like a different character in each of the timelines (her character arc in the '95 Oshii movie is not consistent with how she's characterized in the SAC series, for example).

The overall tone/vibe is very different between timelines, too. The Oshii movies are very philosophical and introspective in nature, while the SAC series is more of a straight-forward, episodic police procedural, and Arise is more action-oriented in general.

Studio who? It looks like this studio has done a lot of high profile stuff, I am familiar with Heiki Story (it's brilliant)
Production IG has been involved with almost all Ghost in the Shells.

The design of Motoko looks exactly like the manga.. so we have come full circle to Ghost in the Shell being a cutting-edge always futuristic anime, back around to looking toward the past, so I wonder what kind of story this will be. A near-future or present-world political thriller.. I am on board for any

@RobertBobert
I wouldn't go so far as to say they're different genres, since they all do still share the same cyberpunk genre conventions and tropes for the most part; but yes, they're stylistically different enough from each other that calling them "reinterpretations" sounds about right.

Now, I haven't read the original GitS manga so I have no real authority to speak on it... but from what I gather, it's not really a plot-driven nor a character-driven story, but more of a showcase for Shirow's ideas and vision of a futuristic society in a cyberpunk setting; the worldbuilding is its main appeal. Hence, none of the GitS anime titles so far have really tried to do a faithful 1-to-1 adaptation of the manga; it's more like the creative people behind them have instead opted to take all these various elements and character attributes that Shirow presents in his work, and use them as inspiration to spin their own story.

@Orororurando Well, to be honest, I've been wanting to get to know this franchise for a long time, although it's not really my area of interest. But I didn't know where to start, since I didn't see any starting point for all the versions. This is one of my problems with old original titles, they often lack a particular vision and what you are used to associating with them can very easily be thrown out in subsequent reimaginings.

@SuperAdventure Sorry, but what's wrong with Amazon? Is it because they don't promote their shows enough?

Well, if you ever wanna try to get into GitS before this new one comes out, then either the '95 Oshii movie or Stand Alone Complex Season 1 are perfectly fine starting points.

You can just pick whichever one sounds like it fits your vibe better:
do you feel like watching something atmospheric, mindfucky, and visually arresting? Go with the original movie.
Do you like episodic format shows that allow for fleshing out the worldbuilding and a variety of interesting cases/scenarios? Then start with the SAC series.

Some might try to suggest starting with the Arise OVAs since they're pseudo-prequels that feature a younger Kusanagi and the formation of Section 9... but I honestly wouldn't recommend those in general 'cause I just think they're kinda boring and mediocre, lol.

And yeah, personally I don't mind seeing different artists getting to flex their creative liberties by reimagining established IPs, but I can understand why the lack of a consistent vision and direction for the long-term would be a turn-off for some people.

@Orororurando I'm not against different perspectives on media, as long as it doesn't grossly violate the core IP. But I don't like it when you can nominally love a franchise for its sandwiches, only to find out when you try to enjoy it again that its new vision is based entirely on cakes.

yea i hope they do this much more, as they kinda have been as of late, like with Urusei Yatsura an Ranma's remakes basically keeping the 80s character design

as an older anime watcher, it does get a bit annoying how so many anime have basically the same artstyle, mainly due to lack of animators lol

Really excited for this one. I first read Ghost in the Shell waaaayyyyyy too young at like 10, so I barely understood it. The art style looks fantastic, very reminscent of the original manga as opposed to the film.
