| A pretty good special episode, I like the cast of Kaiju No. 8 enough to watch them do SoL stuff for a while, although I’m ngl that was a bit of a blue ball ending lol, they gear up to take on a kaiju on their day off but we didn’t even get to see it, oh well, at least that song “Invincible” by OneRepublic was really good, I wonder if that’ll be the ED to Season 2 or not. And of course that shady deal Hoshina was part of turned out incredibly wholesome, you could see it coming miles away but I did still like the reveal, as well as the fact he knew he was being tailed the whole time lol, nothing gets past this guy. But with that I’m now more excited for Season 2, while this episode wasn’t anything crazy, it did help me get reinvested in the world of this series. |

| OK-ish episode overall. Nothing much to say aside from it being your average Special featuring most of the cast goofing around. Last couple of minutes were kinda wholesome tho. Anyways, looking forward to S2. |
| Reno finally found something interesting to do on his day off, and poor Kafka dealing with a bad stomach ache from overeating lol I knew Hoshino spotted Reno & Furuhashi right from the start, which made him enjoy his day off too I guess. |

| The OVA segment of Kaiju No. 8 where Captain Soshiro Hoshina takes quite the day off (before Season 2's airing in 2 weeks), it's every man for himself. Both 3rd Division recruits of Iharu and Reno tailing Hoshina to see what he is up to, and the Mini Cooper-driving vice-captain sure has quite the agenda to be around. From helping Shinomiya and the girls and to their restuarant for lunch together, to helping fellow Defense Force members and the general public get to where they need to be, both guys' patience is wearing thin. Eventually, the cast all come around each other to see what Hoshina is REALLY up to: dealing with some top-secret stuff that leaves everyone speculating what he's truly up to, giving some hardcases to what seems like members of the Yakuza. Which instead, goes to the Tachikawa Disaster Prevention Center and its president in taking care of kids, which everyone gives a hand since they're already much involved in the stalking affair from the very start. Even on a "day off" like this, Hoshina takes everything as serious as it comes, always prepared for the Kaiju emergency alerts whenever and wherever he is, Adding OneRepublic's special ED "Invincible", it's a nice episode to cap the start of Season 2 soon, for a breather. |

| As we await Season 2 of Kaiju No. 8, this special OVA offers a refreshing interlude—centered around none other than Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina on what’s supposed to be his "day off." But in typical Hoshina fashion, even downtime comes with a full itinerary and a serious tone. The episode kicks off with 3rd Division recruits Iharu and Reno suspiciously tailing Hoshina to see what he’s up to. Driving around in his tiny Mini Cooper, Hoshina somehow manages to be everywhere at once—helping Kikoru Shinomiya and the girls with errands, joining them for lunch, assisting Defense Force members, and even guiding civilians. Naturally, Iharu and Reno’s patience starts to wear thin. As more characters start crossing paths, the mystery around Hoshina’s true intentions deepens. At one point, he’s seen handing over mysterious documents to some rather shady-looking figures—possibly Yakuza? The reveal, however, is far more wholesome and surprising: it's all tied to his work with the Tachikawa Disaster Prevention Center and its president, supporting childcare initiatives. What began as a covert stakeout turns into an impromptu team effort, with everyone pitching in. Despite the lighter tone, this OVA reminds us of Hoshina’s unwavering commitment. Even on his day off, he’s alert and ready for any Kaiju-related emergency—a true soldier through and through. The episode wraps with a special touch: OneRepublic’s ending theme “Invincible,” perfectly underscoring the calm-before-the-storm vibes ahead of Season 2. | At first, I thought this was just a recap episode but I couldn't be more wrong. It's an extra episode! So glad I decided to watch this. I guess people who exclusively watch battle shonen would be disappointed by this. But I really like this episode. I felt like Season 1 was very lackluster in terms of giving the supporting characters some screentime. I liked Reno hanging out with his colleagues. It was fun. Tho they still require more development before I can start giving a crap about them. I didn't even remember Igarashi's name before this. That's how much of a non-character they are. But I'm not getting my hopes up for these guys to become recognizable like Hoshina or Kikoru. Anyway, what was with the weird dolphin sfx? Yeah, this episode was kinda predictable. But it was still fun. It's a shame that Kafka had to take a backseat tho. It was fun to see a story that took place before he got exposed. I'm guessing this episode takes place sometime after episodes 7 or 8 before the attack of Kaiju no. 10. Can't wait for Season 2. |
