What If S1 didn’t exist, and S2 was the beginning of the show then after the show ends, they make a separate show to tell us throfin backstory but exactly how season 1 went

last episode of season 1 was "END OF AN PROLOGUE" which means that entirety of season 1 was just a prologue and series actually started in season 2

It wouldn’t work nearly as well, both seasons compliment each other perfectly as is. They could both stand on their own (season 1 probably better than season 2), but the impact would not be there without the other half bringing the story together. I think it’d be pretty foolish to make season 2 the starting point, completing the story, then making the prologue another show afterwards.

I’ve seen people say Yukimura (creator of the manga) initially planned on starting the series out with the farm arc, but the editor told him to make a prologue first to show how Thorfinn got to that point. I personally haven’t seen any evidence of that being the case, but if it is, then that editor made the right call.

What if...?

Well, we wouldn't feel nearly as much compassion for Thorfinn and his road to pacifism, as we do now, cause the masterfully crafted Story and careful writing would've been reversed and totally jumbled up...😅

It would replace a well written Character Arc for a "What happened a year before..." -Moment, instead.

And many Anime WILL just do the hacky Flashback. This Show didn't. It's well made.

Also another thing: It had to start with the tragic Death, to pull people in. It's just how Stories work.

There are series obviously where starting off in the main series becomes popular and having prologue movies/arcs after I.e star wars, kuroko no basket and JJK being the main 3 that come to mind when I think about it off the top of my head. But obviously like what ilhan said, I doubt vinland saga would be as big as it is if we started on the farm arc rather than on S1. In my opinion, the editor made a good call.

Nope

If Thorfinn would just straight away follow his father's teaching without learning the hard way what happens if he ignores his words, his development would be inexistent.
S2 is all about Thorfinn deeply regretting his actions from S1 and and the evil stuff Thorfinn did are essential for his development.

I’m glad this was season 2 instead of season 1. It would’ve felt less impactful had this been the first season because we don’t actually see Thorfinn as a madman. We would just hear that as part of his backstory.

It means a lot more seeing Thorfinn actively be a bloodthirsty killer but then changing into the man he is today.
If I had to choose between One Piece and a girlfriend...I think I'll go with One Piece

I definitely wouldn't have preferred it that way. I generally prefer a much more strictly chronological and linear form of storytelling, with the only exception being some mysteries and time travel stories where that type of jumbled jumping around is inherently a fundamental part of the plot.

I also still slightly prefer season one over season two, not due to the more prevalent battle and combat scenes which is the case for some and which some folks say or imply is the only reason that others could possibly have any preference for season one (or in extreme cases, even like season one at all, as some disliked or hated the first season and only care for season two), but because of the character of Askeladd and his presence, the political machinations especially prominent in its last quarter or so, and some of the religious philosophical dialogue including that surrounding Canute's transformation.

Although, with that said, the penultimate episode of season two (episode 23, or episode 47 of the series overall) was probably better than any one single episode in season one.

I rated season one an 8/10 and season two a 7/10, but combined and for the series as a whole I would lean toward an 8/10. At least for now. The final evaluation will depend on if there is a third or fourth or however many more seasons and if they're sublime or rubbish or anywhere in-between, but not worth worrying about that until when or if it comes to pass.

So… lets have a character growth without showing who the character was to begin with? It’s kinda interesting but I don’t think it would really do much for the show other than making jt a little more confusing

could be cool if they use the s1 content in between as flashbacks.

I feel like it would be the case of one of those series that after sometime of its release people start giving chronological watch orders so ppl will watch it as it is already.

I've heard the author had actually planned to start the series with a slave, but his editor thought it would be too boring. he then wrote the season 1 content. Obviously, double check that, but if I remember correctly:

I think there’s something particularly beautiful about how raw season 1 is. Thorfinn is practically unrecognizable by season 2 and that makes it so much more powerful, knowing how season 1 went. Eventually, by the end of the flipped version, people would have an understanding similar to what we have as S1-S2 watchers, but it wouldn’t nearly hit the same.

I probably would’ve never ended up seeing all of it then, season 2 wasn’t my style at all bored the hell out of me
