I'm fine when shock value is well done but this doesn't do it very well at all like "Hey let's put a torture scene in the fucking first panel we're so mature" and having the villains do an insane amount of taboo shit to try to make them "interesting" as possible. Even Gantz which also does shock content poorly did shock value much better.

Shock value is subjective, I also think the focus was more on weird/sick value. I know I just made the term up but it's not the same thing as shock value.

i dont think fire punch is a manga you should read as your first or second manga. reread it, after you gained some experience

This is the type of manga that even as a seasoned manga reader still disturbs me, so seeing it as your second manga ever, it’s not surprising that your thoughts on it would be like this

The depiction of torture, violence, and various ideas that could be described as sick or extreme is not used by the mangaka in this case for shock value. On the contrary, they are used to quickly and effectively convey the conditions and the state of the apocalyptic world in which the story will unfold. In conclusion, I would like to remind that humans are capable of, and one might even say prone to, resorting to such behaviors when placed in extreme environments like the one presented in the story.

It fits the setting well (it is a rough and painful world to live both in weather and people), plus complements the aesthetics and charm of it.

On gantz it is good too, though in a different fashion.

Overall it is average in terms of violence, typical for a gore tag. Love it
