I Just think this relationship while wholesome and Sweet especially within this recent episode, i feel as if their relationship feels bland as if Its Just "A nice relationship" and thats it. Like I cant tell if its tropes or not which technically is a good thing. But tropes i believe arent bad if done with a interesting hook or premise. But with these 2 theres Just no substance or any interesting hook here within their bond besides i guess being opposites attract sorta? But they dont even play into those personality traits either like.. They are just well... them i guess. As if anyone in the world can be these 2 in which maybe is the selling point of this anime idk. I just know in dangers in my heart (an anime I see in this similar criteria) I see there's a similar opposites attract premise here yet there is a hook that atleast tries to grab and have you invested in their relationship. Why must I care about it here?

Maybe the "vanillaness" of the relationship is for those looking for a realistic vanilla wanting audience and the naturalness is the hook i guess. I mean who am i lol i love trashy rom coms and relationships that are hella unrealistic and wont happen irl. But yea im just getting big horimiya vibes and sorta blue box vibes and was curious if anyone else was feeling the same. As if there's something mute or gray about the relationship that makes you go "they're cute" and that's kinda it.

also why I have a problem with this is that im seeing this as a comfy romance. So I believe in these, the relationship has to really want me to ship them heavy. But I just see it as "oh yay they're uh together now." definitely could be a preference thing I'll be honest there.

To be fair, they've both known each other for 3 days where they barely interacted on the first. Do you really expect them to have a deep and open relationship after not even a week? The fact that Kaoruko is as open and honest as she is after just getting to know Rintaro should tip you off that there's more at play here. The fact that they even get to know each other based on the tension their schools are facing is a miracle, and Rintaro just last episode finally got to know that what school they go to doesn't matter in the eyes of Kaoruko. You've seen how Kikyo girls treat the boys at Chidori and how that's left a sour taste in their mouth, but you'll also get to know just why the girls are as agressive as they are soon enough. But with that behind them, they can finally move on to getting to know one another on a more personal basis. Trust me, their relationship will deepen, but it's been two episodes, just give it some time.

I get where you’re coming from.

But as someone who’s followed the manga for a while and now seeing it adapted, I honestly think that’s exactly what makes this series so good.

@Lervikingen ...I do think you can expect characters to have a relationship after three days, not in a romantic sense, but in so far that we get what they see in each other or at least see why they fit together (if they do). I also think their "relationship" feels flat this far, and it's not because they haven't fucked yet, but because they have like no chemistry. They feel like characters, not real people, and so their interactions feel just as artificial. That's at least how I feel when watching the show ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's only been 2 episodes, they just met, or do you want them to open up completely after just a few days of meeting, revealing their true selves and falling in love? Calm down, I can't guarantee that the next episodes will be good for you, but judging an anime after only 2 episodes is a bit too much.

@Dellio_man as an active manga reader of Kaoru Hana, in my opinion, you get the right feeling of this anime. Because hey, they are still strangers to each other at this point.
I mean, it's not like they are a childhood friend, former classmate, or the already a year classmate. like most anime romance stories. they just meet twice and not much to talk about. so yeah it's still bland, maybe uninteresting.
tbh, I still read the manga actively not because of the romance. romance wise, I'll rate it 8/10. but on how the mangaka bring stories beyond romance for main character and support characters equally its why it worth 10/10. and its probably the reason you'll see more of the comments that said this manga is wholesome, rather than said this manga is romantic.

It's been two freaking episode and people already passing on judgement as they are bland. They don't even know eachother that well only been 2-3 days since they first meet.
And isn't the school circumstances enough for a an intresting premise. If wholesomeness is problem then watch toxic romance.

Not really judging taste but maybe am judging slightly..

It's not abt wether its early or not. In my opinion there needs to be atleast an instant hook on why I want these 2 to be together. Thats my problem with the anime. Doesn't even matter if its a slow burner or not for the relationship. As a romance i feel I should from the get go "feel" like they should be together like I've felt with many romances before. Yet here it just feels like wtv in which is a problem for me.

As I said im not going by how there relationship develops. But the hook with WHY I should root for them in the first place. Thats why I said it could be personal preference because lol as u mentioned yes I did drop kaguya for a sorta similar reason bc I just wanted the relationship to be interesting first so I could root for them But the comedy just got in the way alot of the time. And I say that as a rom com enjoyer.

@Dellio_man mb I might have worded that badly, my point was just wait a few more episodes and see what happens, I've never read the manga so idk what happens either but lets see how they develop.

its understandable if its bland since its still in the early phases of their relationship

@queenofautism Counterargument: Demon Slayer.

Also, a great manga can still have a bad start, and I find it absolutely valid to critique a work no matter how highly rated it is. OP was just honestly asking how other people felt regarding the superficiality of these characters, and I think that's more than valid. I expect this show to get a whole lot better, but I can still look at it and say, that its beginning is rather weak so far.

I misread your comment as "If this anime/manga was bland, it wouldn't have been rated so highly on this site", which, to be honest, is the more intuitive way of understanding it, but still, that was a mistake on my part, sorry.

@APEMODE11 ...yeah? That seems pretty reasonable to me, to expect two characters who get like 70% of the screen time together to have some form of relationship that is compelling. If you want romance examples that managed to establish a compelling relationship within thirty minutes: Kaguya & Shirogane (Kaguya-Sama), Mai & Sakuta (Rascal does not dream), Hori & Miyamura (Horimiya), Mitsume & Sousuke (Skip and Loafer), Mitsuha & Taki (Your Name), Yuu & Touko (Bloom into You), Taiga & Ryuuji (Toradora), Akane & Kotarou (Tsuki Ga Kirei), Nukumizu & Yanami (Makeine).

To make this clear, neither OP nor I are/were talking about how far they got into their relationship, but simply how they work together as characters and what chemistry they have, which in this case they seemingly just don't.

yesss u get me exactly its not about "how it progresses" but gang what is there to pair here 😭 i just find this aspect starting the anime disappointing because in many animes you mentioned (especially toradora) the bond and potential character dynamic is established in the first 30 minutes watching the anime. Its been about 40 minutes and I still dont feel excited for them to be together thats my general issue here.

I enjoyed it, just because I love some me some diabetes anime, the only thing I'm having a difficult time understanding is why Waguri is so popular, more popular than for example Yamato Rinko from Ore Monogatari, when they seem like the exact same character (except Waguri eats cakes and Yamato bakes them lol). I'm 14 chapters into the manga and I still got the same feeling. And there are more characters like these two out there, so what makes this one special?

@Infernalization Completely the opposite, I disliked the manga due to the amount of unnecessary drama and subsequent chapters of nothing but apologising

I'm still going to watch at least some of the adaptation, but it's truly the most average-good show that's been severely overhyped

It's a very good summary of these characters and their romance. They simply are. For example, I'm not a fan of Horimiya main couple (I find Hori toxic), but there's chemistry between them, and these characters are human. Here, it all feels so artificial, bland sometimes melodramatic for no reason at all and
I don't know... fairytale-like.

yea man idk im conflicted. Just watched ep 3 and im still left with this exact same feeling. Im just not getting it when it comes to their relationship and chemistry. The apologizing part was nice tho with his friend toward kaoru tho.

But yea still feels very flat and just nice.
