I like this anime but I kinda agree with the latest review. The use of 'sorry' and 'thank you' feels a bit excessive. What do you guys think?

100% agreed
Even though it serves to be a wholesome series, it needs to stay natural. Saying komenasai every 10 seconds period remains as something i would personally change since it is in fact very annoying.

I think it's to fit the tone of the series. There is some awkwardness on how Rintarou and Kaoruko meet for the first time - especially given the typical behavior of Kaoruko's prestigious school that held back their relationship, but now they've grown more noticeably comfortable with each other compared to their earlier, awkward encounters.

While it's a bit excessive to some, I don't see that a big problem because the leads are kind and respectful compared to the more toxic dynamics in some romance anime.

I think it just makes up for better communication through characters. One main problem I have with romances is the MISCOMMUNICATION!!!!! Seriously, and saying "small" things like "sorry" or "thank you" just shows the bond through these characters and love that they have for eachother by saying those things, if anything its something i love about this series even if its "overdone" its better than saying absolutely nothing at all

I mean I get what you're saying, but it's to be expected with the amount of sensitive characters with good hearts we have.

The foundations of their relationships are built off the awkwardness, misunderstandings, minor conflicts, and whatnot, so it feels natural.

What I think is that they use it excessively now and later it’ll lessen and lessen until the over-politeness is gone. I’m assuming it’s there as a small detail to eventually show the progression in their relationship. But that’s just my theory if it even makes sense.

As I was saying since the very first episode, they talk weirdly. Most conversations are full of exclamations, reactions, and small comments either apology or praise. The umpteenth "sorry" doesn't necessarily make a character kind. It only makes the awkwardness more forced.

It’s how Japanese society works. How many anime do you need to watch before figuring that out? Watch Disney channel if you find typical Japanese behaviour annoying. Or battle shonen.

Relax old man, being 58 might make your patience load slower than Windows 95, but that’s no reason to be rude to someone just asking a normal question.

if you have a problem with characters being excessively kind and apologetic with each other then that sounds like a you problem. The whole series is about how both schools don’t like each other, just being nice and respectful to each other shows theyre trying to stop any miscommunication happening between them.

Plus the vibe of the anime gives off wholesomeness, more depth and respectfulness for every character, we need anime like this more.

I actually find the dialogue to be very natural and one of the best part about this series, but I do live in Japan which the series is set in. Of course non-Japanese are going to dislike this because it really wasn’t made with global standards in mind unlike a lot of other series that has more generic dialogue.

Best take I’ve seen. Given the context they need to be extra respectful and considerate, and it also makes sense given the tone of the story. If one does not like this type of show they should drop entirely instead of singling out this one part to complain about.

My dear grandpa my point is, with all that free time, you could be out feeding ducks at the park. Instead you’re here snapping at harmless questions. Who knew it takes more than 58 years to outgrow tantrums?

Everything’s okay grandpa, don’t let the blood pressure spike over some lousy kids like me. Drink a warm cup of milk, put on your slippers and head off for your nap. The forum will still be here when you wake up refreshed from your short snooze.

Such a funny guy! Just cruising the threads looking for someone to bait. When I’ve finished feeding the ducks at 3am to make you happy I will of course make a nice relaxing brew. But I’m sure while I’m enjoying that, you will be continuing to masturbate over your huge self esteem, thinking your clever witticisms were soooooo cool. I may be ageing a little, but it will be a quite while yet before you reach maturity. Keep them pathetic comments coming, at least someone else is getting a break while you make a jackass of yourself here.

There are several reasons for this:

1. Politeness is instilled in (east) Asian cultures. Children are taught to be as polite as possible, and parents are often quite strict on this.
2. The characters carry a lot of trauma and past hardships, and apologizing excessively is a very common habit.

No, it only works such way in Kyoto or in rural areas, which this anime is obviously not in such setting.

Your East Asia here only mean Japan and Taiwan, obviously not including China and Korea in your context.

To be serious though, regional variance in Japan is large enough to prove your statement is wrong… if it’s in rural setting then you are right (Tagaki reference), but in cities, no.

Rubbish. Yes there are different levels of politeness varying from person to person, and in big cities a bit of coldness towards foreigners more from fear of misunderstanding than dislike, but generally with half the population over 60 old values are holding up well. There are sub-groups of society trying to become western, but even in Tokyo they are a minority. Have you been, and do you have some ability to speak Japanese? I have and found the attitudes of young and old to be refreshingly kind and thoughtful.

“Sorry” is used quite a lot in Japanese culture and Anime’s. However, I’ll agree that this series overuses it. There’s been a few moments I’m like OMG stop apologizing back and forth over something trivial or already apologized for.

The show shines brightest when being thankful for the good moments. The contrast helps but there’s other ways to show sorrow than regret and apology.

It’s small stuff like this that prevents me from rating the show a 10. I also think the series could have lent a little more screen time to world building.

@ForestWoodSL It absolutely does. Children in China for example are taught to be as polite as possible to people. They get constantly judged by their parents on things such as table manners and manners in general. Even your posture can be criticized. People want to avoid conflict, be seen as respectful, and don't want to lose face. It partly makes the parents look bad if the kid isn't polite, and hence kids tend to grow up with certain ethical values. You can see this with east Asian kids in general who grow up in western countries.

Many users have pointed out that this is hardly noticeable to Japanese viewers. This apology aspect is hardly mentioned by them at all; it's mainly western viewers that appear to be weirded out by it.

The dialogue is what makes the show.
Like many others said, being polite and respectful, even overly so, is a natural part of Japanese culture. Especially when it's people in opposing groups sorting out their differences and becoming friends - they definitely don't want to say or do the wrong thing so they end up apologising more than necessary.
