Petshop of Horrors
Count D, a quite interesting pet shop owner from an area called Chinatown, sells rare and hard-to-come-by pets to people longing for something special, but with each sale comes a contract. If the rules of the contract are followed, everything goes fine, but if someone breaks the rules of the contract, the pet shop cannot be held responsible for anything unfortunate that might happen. Leon Orcot, a homicide detective, has linked many odd and unexplainable deaths together; they all were customers of Count D's pet shop, and he intends to find out why.

Watch Petshop of Horrors on the Internet Archive.

This was one of my earliest anime. I've had this series on VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray. Is it a great masterpiece? No. It is some really fun schlock. Think "Tales From the Crypt" if the Crypt Keeper were some hot guy. I've also read all the manga for this series and very much enjoyed it. Though it gets more urban fantasy than horror later.

Oh, this is a series I quite liked bacj when I watched it for the first time! I'm glad it's not lost to the internet so I can rewatch it now. :3
Out of the stories, the Siren stuck with me the most.

This and Kino are basically the "The Twilight Zone of anime" to me. Quasi-anthologies which tell in short form a different parable or morality tale every time. An examination of different snapshot instances of how intrinsic human nature can easily and quickly come to ruin different humans' lives.

One of my first horror series, arguably my first primarily horror series, in my Top 50, and one of my modest number of 9/10s. Count D also used to be in my favorite characters before getting crowded out. The aesthetic of this series, particularly in anything around and having to do with the titular pet shop, can only be described as sumptuous.

The only aspect of it which always puzzled me is the fact that it came out in the late 90s (1999) and yet character design and animation to me looks like more that of an 80s show. Also, I wonder why they didn't decide to make it any longer than four episodes if the manga it's derived from ran from 1995 - 1998 and therefore was already finished by the time this would air. I guess that makes two puzzling aspects.

I liked that anime; especially the Legolgel songs; the group also has a song in the ending of The Devil Lady, a series from 1998, great anime btw

Even though I know it's at best highly improbable and most likely never going to happen, I keep hoping that someday there would be a full adaptation of the manga as it has great subtle horror and includes interesting explorations of human nature and the relationships between humanity and the rest of the living world. The 1999 anime adaptation is lovely and captures the tone and atmosphere of the manga well, it just makes me wish there was more of it. Nice to know that it's on the Internet Archive as well so people don't have to go on a hunt to be able to watch it!

@shoetax If this were several years ago, I would say we would never see another adaptation of it. But new adaptations old happen every once in a while now, so who knows.

What I'd really love to see is someone finish translating Shin Petshop of Horrors since that was one of the titles Tokyopop just canceled when they "shut down" that time.
