The season finale.

Reflecting on all the events that happened, Hikaru kinda embraced his identity. His personality and actions in this episode felt more human than in the first episodes. We also got him and Yoshiki at the beach. Seems they managed to get out of some emotions in this, a mixture of anxiety and happy moments. Props to the VA for playing their characters so well and bringing them to life.

Season 2 got announced

Ya know, they almost had me fooled for a second. All lighthearted, sweet moments with Hikaru and Yoshiki, from the park, the train, and the beach, slowly spiral into shambles in a matter of minutes. Starts with Hikaru finally deciding to go back up to the mountains where he should’ve stayed all along. Ofc though, it makes sense that Yoshiki wouldn’t take that lightly.

All this happens while sentimental piano music plays in the background. I’m telling you, the direction in this show is something out of this world, I can’t even begin to explain it. That little moment with Yoshiki begging and expressing how he truly feels about Hikaru was oddly sweet. And again, amazingly directed with the transitions between Yoshiki’s inner self and his outward behavior. Seriously, I don't blame anyone for thinking this is a BL at first glance. Dude is on his KNEES here bro lmaooo.

Knew it was all for naught though when they shoed that Tanaka was there watching the whole thing... though, that's for the future. Don't know how to fully feel about this series tbh. On one hand, really like it when it leans into the eerie, unsettling horror I came for, but I'm not fully sold on how it keeps switching between horror and BL melodrama, with character interactions and emotional beats that could use a bit of work. It ends up feeling a tad jarring and pulls me out of the mood. While I don’t mind the mix in theory, I just wish it would pick one lane and stick to it. Truly though, the direction is so immersive I can’t help but keep praising it above everything else.

Seaon two though, if kept the same direciton, will be seated gladly.

INJECT SEASON 2 OF PEAK YAOI IN MY VEINS NOW. Cygames saved their best for last because they were so deep in their directorial bag for this finale oh my days this was incredible. Camera angles, holding certain shots, overlaying real world backgrounds with 2D animation, lighting, cinematography, this was everything I been praising about what they’ve brought to this adaptation from the start. Then you have our gayest and most angsty episode yet, perfect finale.

I LOVE how the two big scenes in this episode are contrasts to ones from earlier in the season. Asako confronting ‘Hikaru’ in the classroom and saying the exact same thing that almost got her killed earlier in the season had me so nervous, like girl why are you getting so confrontational with a supernatural being that can easily kill you. They played with your expectations making you think ‘Hikaru’ would lash out at her, instead, he realizes Asako and the others never got to properly mourn their friend and he reaches out to comfort her, wiping her tears and apologizing. Shows how much he’s grown to understand human emotions and social situations. The fact Asako accepts the new ‘Hikaru’ and doesn’t hate him is big too, showing him he does indeed have a place he belongs.

“No use in forcing her, she’s a girl after all” God, hearing Yoshiki’s gross misogynistic family members made ME feel trapped and I’ve only had to deal with them a few minutes, imagine spending your entire life surrounded by backwards people with outdated views like that.

Hikaru inviting him out to give him a fun time before ultimately trying to leave at the end js a nice play on the earlier episode when Yoshiki tried to kill Hikaru but wanted to give him one last fun day before he did it. Of course, this time it’s just ‘Hikaru’ leaving rather than killing anyone, but in a sense he’d be killing the relationship they had and truly killing off OG Hikaru because he’d be completely gone. Also, could be reading way too deep, but I feel like overlaying the real world mountains and trains in that scene is because they’re two styles that contrast each other, like how Yoshiki and Hikaru don’t really blend in their village because they don’t conform to the villagers’ standards.

“I don’t care if you’re a killer. I’m with you.” Oh he really can’t live without his man, I know that’s right Yoshiki. The headpat too and being on his knees for him. This is insane levels of yearning??? Hello??? There’s still people that will try to deny this is a gay romance show with LGBT themes at its core too lol. This scene is so important because it’s Yoshiki fully accepting that he’s fallen in love with the current ‘Hikaru’ and losing him would hurt just as much as losing OG Hikaru, not just because it’s his appearance, but because he loves this new personality too.

The fact Tanaka is watching this all go on like a damn J drama is killing me as well. I cannot wait for season 2 to see what he’s schemed up. This was an amazing finale!

And we finally saw the scene where they were at the train on the way to the beach where "hikaru" made the same funny face the real hikaru did at the last time yoshiki saw him at school, we also saw a part of this scene in the outro each episode, but we didnt know that yoshiki laughed after "hikaru" made this face, we thought he didnt laugh because it wasnt the real hikaru making this face, but he actually did laugh, its a small detail but it makes me happy for some reason

Didn't even think about how the class got robbed of their true chance to properly grieve for Hikaru, and the fact that 'he' realized that himself was pretty heavy.

I was so ready for Tanaka to drop one last ♪Kiminiii~♫ while the screen faded to black, maybe while a Season 2 announcement card popped up (which I know is confirmed but that'd've been a hilarious way to do it)

In a weaker season this anime would obviously be anime of the season, but this summer has so many strong contenders, it's actually a good sign that the industry is doing well in keeping quality as high as its quantity.

And yes, the sequel announcement, in fact I'm 100% sure this anime would get a sequel even without any announcement, I just know. I hope it'll arrive as soon as next year. CygamesPictures has produced two gems in this year alone, the other one is Apocalypse Hotel. This studio is good in both adapting and creating original anime.

Season finale, a moment of self realisation for the two, an emotional roller coaster. Hikaru has matured a lot and Yoshiki also came to face his true self. This episode had the vibe that Tanaka was gonna randomly pop in and stab Hikaru or something but didn't happen. He did came out the end though and it ended. What's he gonna do?

I quite enjoyed this. Unique theme and always love this kinda mystery/horror stuff. This one has an interesting story going on with nonuki/Hikaru but this heavily leans on characterisation more instead of focusing on more lore and mystery which I don't mind but would have liked focus on the latter more. Anyway the adaptation has been really good so far. Cygames Pictures doing a wonderful job adapting this. Looking forward to s2.

Quite an emotional rollercoaster for the 2 leads in this finale. I really enjoyed this show and I'm glad a 2nd season has already been announced.

Also, I'm definitely not tripping right, the train scene legit looked like a real life train that Hikaru and Yoshiki were then added to 💀 I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.

Fascinating. So we have a real heart to heart between our two boys and it seems Hikaru will stick around. Plus Asako fully confronts him. So in a way it feels we've moved past a lot of big character drama moments with our main cast and we just have to move forward with the plot. Which I guess is where our ghostbuster boy comes in with his own motivation. Perhaps going against his company or whatever and seemingly lying to that one dude. Obviously he strolls up on our boys now but I'm really not sure where we are going from here. Try to save the village without losing Hikaru etc, but I'm definitely interested to see how Tanaka will be involved. I think theres a lot of potential in this character beyond the sort of villain trying to catch our guy that he was originally introduced as.

Haha it’s still hilarious how almost all manga readers were defending the show on forum, saying it’s not gay show, when in fact it’s probably the most gay (non-romantic, though) anime ever. That’s not exactly bad, but I somewhat disappointed of being lied about true essence of the show.

CygamesPictures did a real master-class here. Perfect directing and eerie horror vibes.

Abrupt ending, which was expected, but gonna praise the author for psychological side of anime. It’s top notch. Sadly, Yoshiki is so fucking annoying that it’s hard for me to get a perfect enjoyment out of the series. Everything else is great. 6/10 (probably will rise it to 7 after s2).

When Asako started crying, Hikaru without thinking just went to wipe her tears away. He really has changed a lot since then without himself knowing.
He even made his mind to go to the mountains if it meant Yoshiki and others would be able to move on with their lives and be protected against the impurities.
Yoshiki finally spoke about how he truly feels about Hikaru and mostly about himself. Tanaka was sitting and enjoying this heartfelt romance unravel between the two monsters Hikaru and Yoshiki. The whole beach scene was so beautiful.
What a way to end this season with Tanaka walking towards them both.
So excited for season 2.

I was going to rate this an 8 but those last five minutes brought the score up to a 9. Give me the gay. I'm excited for the second season. It was nice to see the monster telling Yoshiki all the differences between it & the original Hikaru. The monster has different tastes. Yoshiki got so attached. I kind of wish we saw more about the little sister. She said "going to the pool with class mates" but she doesn't go to school...

How come they changed the whole ending and made it so gay?? The last 3 minutes are completely anime-only. In the manga Yoshiki made a clear distinction between "hikaru" and Hikaru (whom he loves), and feels no romantic feelings towards the child-like "Hikaru". "Hikaru" loves Yoshiki in his special way, but it is very carefully explained that this feeling is neither sexual nor romantic: the feeling isn't human.

The animation was great (when they don't over-do it), but why try to modify a story that is already perfect??

For me, it's definitely the anime of the season. It's a shame it doesn't stand a chance against series like Dan da dan and other popular ones... it's rarely talked about, rarely appreciated, eh. Such gems always get lost in the depths of other series. It's good that at least we have a second season announced.

Final episode. I was so glad that we got the second one-on-one between Asako & Unuki-Hikaru. When I skimmed through the manga in anticipation for this anime, that scene is the one that stood out as Unuki-Hikaru realized how important the real Hikaru had been and the fact that his friends and family should’ve had the chance to mourn him. Can’t wait to see how things will go in season 2.

Some of the best editing/cinematography in a 12-episode anime that I have seen, and on half the budget of season 2 of My Dress-Up Darling.

So this was the first BL anime I (and I am guessing a lot of people) have ever watched to completion. The story was intriguing enough in the manga, but the way Cygames handled the cinematography, editing, and series composition is what makes this stand-out and break out of the “yaoi ghetto” that such a work would normally be confined to. I can’t say that this will make me search out other BL works (I guess I’m more of a “Yuri Danshi” in that respect) as my initial exposure to this work actually led me to seek out other horror romances in anime & manga. I realized that this series and most modern horror romances got their contemporary origin from I love Aono-kun So Much I Could Die (which is ending its 10 year run this year) and the last decade has seen a lot of horror romances emerge in it’s shadow and Hikaru is just another offspring. Next Thursday, we get to see the GL version of The Summer Hikaru Died where we substitute mountain deity with a mermaid. See y’all in a couple days!

How to save time/cost? Use ED visuals and live action footage! lol
I love how this anime can make a sudden style shift work. They've already used live action footage before with the chicken, so a sudden shift to live action didn't even feel off. Instead, it pulled me in deeper.

Yoshiki is having a conversation with his family, a scene that didn't exist in the manga. It's like they're healing; a sweet scene, but also cruel in a way.

The class drew a picture of Hara-sen! lol I love that the creators of the show are just as much of a troll as the original manga author. The drawing of Hara-sen says "Himitsuuuu" like Hikaru had said in episode 1 in Yoshiki's flashback.

Asako's conversation with "Hikaru" got shifted to the final episode. But, I am glad they kept it. For a moment, I thought it would be cut out, since the conversation was the reason "Hikaru" thinks he's hurting Yoshiki's healing, which makes him go to Kurebayashi's place and also decide to disappear into the mountains. But here, the same things happened for a different reason, so I was worried the Asako scene had lost its reason to exist.

Tanaka told Takeda about Nounuki-sama!!! After seeing that scene, I was worried the ending from vol 5 would be taken out, since he was supposed to say it to Yoshiki and "Hikaru." But, after watching the whole episode, I must say I am grateful for that decision. If Tanaka had said it to the boys, the season would have to end in a very uncomfortable cliff hanger. But, not ending it that way let the boys be together for the end of the season, mirroring the start of the season.

In the Tanaka and Takeda scene, they laid the ground work for season 2 as well. Nounuki-sama was not the cause of everything going wrong, and Indou's ritual was pointless from the start. Which would imply Kouhei and Hikaru died for no reason.
But, how true is Tanaka's words?

I am not sure if the people in Yoshiki's house were his relatives or his neighbours, but the scene with them showed just how unsafe it feels to be gay around a bunch of conservative people.

"Hikaru" has again said he'll grant Yoshiki's wish, but Yoshiki doesn't want anything from him other than his friendship.

They went to the sea! Just like they said they would in ep 7!

I was not expecting "Hikaru" to start singing! lol

Yoshiki and "Hikaru' fought like they did as children! But this time, they're fighting for each other's happiness.
I thought Yoshiki was about to come out to "Hikaru." Maybe he did come out, I don't know. Some dialogues from vol 6 were brought here, the ones about Yoshiki calling himself a monster who has to hide himself and how that relates to "Hikaru," which was a good decision. That helped the season feel tighter.

Man, I am not okay. I love this anime. I love the manga. They're both so good, and also the exact thing I had always wished for: a queer character led story that isn't romance or coming-of-age, and has psychological horror and fantasy elements. If you look at my profile, I mention my favourite genres, and this anime fits all at once! lol
Season 2, I will wait for you!!! My brain hasn't quite accepted that season 1 is over...😭😭😭
