IT'S BACK!!! THEY'RE BACK!!! GINTAMA'S BAAAACK!!! YEEEEEAAAAAH!!!
Everything is great! Flawless! Perfection! Masterpiece! Wakadaisho! xD

Seriously though, it's really hard to get most of Gintama jokes without those 'notes' for the references (I wonder if there are still some fansubs out there that does that). It only worked for me since I'm already familiar with each character's shtick and banters. I can understand if people dislikes this because of that. As for me, I'm just happy it's back ^_^

1000/10. Hedoro said so.

I just started watching this, and while I haven't watched most of Gintama and the 350+ episodes this show spans, I decided to check this out, and it's really funny stuff. Lots of random stuff, but it's all great stuff here.

And thus, it starts off with Gintoki becoming a teacher at this school going by the name Ginpachi Sakata, and he's doing odd stuff like in the original series, but teaching odd subjects instead. Whether it be giving his students tests they can pass or what not, he's doing his best despite whatever shenanigans come his way like the principal Hata spying on him or his students getting in trouble.

In the latest episode, a trio of robbers invade the school and are holding the students hostage. Ginpachi goes against advice not to provoke them as the robbers demand that Hata drops the barrier, but Ginpachi knew that the students would come through. Kagura sucker-punches Shinpachi that causes the bottle of chemical to go flying, eventually spilling the contents on the robbers to defeat them. They got a pretty handsome award, but unfortunately Hata squandered it on decorating his office in gold. Pretty funny stuff once again.

A new batch of Gintama Alumni has entered the chat: Gengai, Sakamoto (fittingly, a Math teacher), Matsudaira, and of course, the one! the only! Tsukuyooo!!! Hopefully, we get a lot of Ginpachi x Tsuki banters.

Admittedly, the punchlines of the show hasn't been hitting well for me these past 2 episodes, especially with non-reference/parody jokes. Even for Gintama standards, this show's slapstick is a bit too light. I assume they can't afford all of the VAs to be in the same episode at once so they are limited to what they can do with the characters, despite all of them being in one place. A lot of them are definitely awfully quiet in this episode.

YESSIR!!! Another on-brand Gintama episode! The comedy for this episode (6)- with Shinpachi being a 'straight man' for the whole episode, and all the reference jokes- was so Gintama. And who just decided to be the highlight of the episode? None other than... MC ZURA!!! Yo! Yo! Zura never fails to be funny. xD

Glad to see Tama finally be involved. But sad to see Kyubei remaining to be a background without a single line.
EDIT: I also just realized that Hedoro, Yamazaki, and Sarutobi was missing for this episode. Kyuubei who had no lines was present, but they can't have those three as well? Sadge.

(Episode 8)

Classic Gintama 'camaraderie' episode, where everyone helps a troubled person without stepping on personal boundaries, by stomping on every boundary. xD

Finally! They gave Kyubei a line! xD Yamazaki and Sarutobi got some too this time-- very little it might be.

As always, Zura just keeps maximizing his little screentime. He's supposed to dress up as a "Maiko" (an Apprentice Geisha), but instead went as "Michael" (... Jackson) xD

Another episode with a school situation, and a Gintama solution. This time, a Grinch tries to steal Cultural Festival. xD

Yamazaki finally got more than just a line and presence-- he's actually the center of the episode.
I actually forgot that he's shipped with Tama. Kinda wish they had Tama do more as well for this episode.

Otsuu's song though... "Not even 5!" xD And the shoutouts to Gojo Satoru, All Might, and Coach Ansai.

Katsura and Elizabeth never fails! The show should've really had those 2 more often since the beginning.

And speaking of characters that should've been involved more, this is another episode that missed a big opportunity to involved the other characters. When they were having auditions for the female lead of the movie, I got a bit excited, thinking they'd have most of the female characters do a bit, which unfortunately didn't happen. Would've loved to see Tsukuyo, Sarutobi, and Kyuubei do a lottle something as well-- even Ane and Mone playing flute or dancing or whatnot. (The casting budget limitation really is the biggest weakness of the show, imo).

This goes to show that not all delinquent fashion is created equal. Hammer pants are definitely the sign of one there and the so-called Monk Hunt emphasizes that.

Fans be getting wet right now; Takasugi is back! xD And if that's not enough, Kamui and the Yato crew finally entered the chat.

Glad to see the show acknowledging and making jokes about its BTS situations. They did 4th wall breaks of playfully admitting that the setting of the show is awkward for the Gintama cast, and that how the scenes plays out are being affected by production issues. xD

As a Gintama fan who's not really that satisfied with how the show is turning out, that's all I really needed: Honesty. And they did it in a Gintama way, by exposing the production issues through 4th wall breaks-- Love it!

No wonder they couldn't include majority of the cast more often, they used all the budget on this (11th) episode. xD
Every present character finally had dialouges. And the animation for the Shinsuke/Kamui fight- even though it made their character models look off- really energized the episode.

I'll admit defeat; They got me. I thought the 4th wall breaks they were doing regarding the production issues were just the usual Gintama on-brand inside jokes. But they actually used that 4th Wall as a main serious issue for Takasugi's motivation for being rebellious in the story. It doesn't get more Gintama than making something meaningful out of absurdity.

When the characters did a bit about being Takasugi's "comrade" one by one, it was really reminiscent of how they would joke around during a serious fight in the OG series. And Man! When that 'Donten' music hit... I'm all hyped!

This show may have not exactly met my expectation, but it's still managing to hit my Gintama weak points.

Just when it looked like last week's episode was the last, it was up front in saying that there's one more episode. And it turns out to be a class reunion episode where all the students from Class 3-Z get together and look back. And of course, it didn't hold back with the craziness as Kagura transforms into King Chappa (whose name is censored for obvious reasons), along with other Dragon Ball characters being parodied, as well as references to the Chunin Exam in Naruto, as well as Dragon Quest. Then they played the opening theme song twice as their way of saying to take things back to the top. But what Shinpachi meant was top of the episode, not the entire series. And it ends with a teaser for a second season that may or may not happen. There's no more fitting way to end things here given how wheel-breaking the Gintama series is.

Final Thoughts

As somebody who has only watched the first two cours of the original Gintama series that I only understand part of the show's humor and appeal, but it's as I remember with the numerous jokes and stuff that make this show go. The humor is great, the characters are a wild and fun bunch, and the show is pretty creative and unafraid to make fun of itself. So in all it's a fun time to be had even if some of the segments weren't up to snuff with the rest of the series.

Aight... that's a very good Gintama-style finale episode. I loved how they ran with the PR ad til the end.

7.5/10.
As a Ginrama fan, It pains me to not give this a high score, especially when I anticipated it to become my favorite this season. After long years of craving for Gintama to come back, it finally happened. I was so freakin excited when I saw the trailer and heard the OP theme; I thought it was perfect.
Unfortunately, it just didn't meet my expectations for how funny it's going to be, now that it's in a setting that's has more freedom to fool around with. It didn't work for me as a fanservice since the production budget was clearly limiting the appearance of some characters/VA, which effectively affects the original dynamic of the characters as well. It was also hit and miss for me as a comedy show in general since the show was rowing a boat in two different rivers: redundantly using Gintama's running gags, and trying to be the Novel version.
But of course, Gintama is my favorite Anime series of all time so, I can't hate on this; I still appreciate it for bringing back the Gintama crew. I just hope that the 2nd season they teased (if it's not another "scam" like Gintama The Movie xD) will be much better in handling the characters/VAs. BE FOREVER YOROZUYA!!!
