Honestly, if AoT had had an anime with mediocre animation, poor direction, and a bland soundtrack, it would have been dismissed as generic and would have had no large-scale impact. I'd mainly blame the manga for this. The AoT manga, at the beginning and for a good part, is atrocious, not only in terms of the art, but also in terms of its setting, pacing, and dialogue. However, Wit Studio, with the legendary first season, seems to have corrected and better adapted most of the story, which took more shape than it is now. It reminds me a lot of the Demon Slayer phenomenon, a terrible manga but a stellar first season where it crowned its success. The difference is that AoT has a better story and characters going forward, but without the anime, I'm pretty sure it would have been forgotten soon enough.

Yeah for sure. Though it's not like manga tends to become a worldwide phenomenon on its own anyways.

Plenty of anime in this genre are more popular because of the anime. It goes for the majority of them just some more than others.

It did have decent sales before anime release

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-12-02/50-top-selling-manga-in-japan-by-volume/2012

The thing is anime is more responsible for a spike in sales outside Japan and continued interest in the franchise.

Inside Japan it's initially more responsible for advertisement for the source material. AoT anime had the author himself engage and say stuff like it's the final form of his work, so it was much more than an advertisement.

Regarding Demon Slayer, Ufotable struck gold:

1. Nasu liked it while Ufotable was engaged with Fate

2. A part of the studio took it as a passion project

3. Togashi (HxH) also loved it. Overall the manga just had the right reception to make it into a popular franchise.

4. Shueisha editors and Aniplex saw the potential. Ufotable was contracted anyway.

5. They put their passion into that 1st season and rest was history in terms of monetary gains.

You are right. The manga's art is not so good. Attack on Titan has become a masterpiece because of the anime.

It became successful because of the bad parts. The foreshadowing was so bad and simplistic that most casual viewers were able to predict the twist and that made them feel smart.
This viewer group does not care about plot holes, that's why SnK didn't fail in the later seasons either.
KnY is a bad example in that sense, because it didn't use simple foreshadowing. It is liked because of the good story.

Not at all. The manga was selling VERY good before the anime came out during a time anime wasnt as main stream as right now.

Obviously the anime made it boost its sales to stratospheric proportions but unlike Kimetsu, SnK had a significant fanbase before the anime.

I actually remember that before the anime people didnt know if Hange was a guy or a girl, and Levi was known as Rivaille by some minstranslations.

Have you seen the manga, of course the anime was the reason 1 this got famous. Look at blame, it took 15 + years to get attention.

The manga was successful before the anime airs.

The author was inspired by Muv-Luv Alternative VN, and he felt he should write a story with endless depth that everyone can enjoy.

I think the author mentioned it during age 20th anniversary:
When the author publishes the first volume/chapter of AoT, he won some award (so I don’t remember the award, is it Shuiesha gold award?). He felt guilty that AoT has ripped off MLA and went to the creator of MLA to apologise but he was chilled with it and invited him to dinner.

Years later, the anime airs and further boosts its popularity.

Yes, the anime made the series famous worldwide in the first place after all.

I've never heard AoT at all before the 1st season got adapted, and when the 1st season came out, many people were talking about it left and right.

There are more anime fans than manga fans, that goes for any series. Animation is easier to digest than reading the material.

this is almost true for every written work outside of Harry Potter and possible Twilight.

I bet LOTR isn't as popular as it would be without the movies.

If we're talking about the West, probably yes. But the manga had already been a sales success in Japan. Then you have to consider that people are reading less and less.

AoT has always sold well, but the anime has definitely contributed significantly to it becoming such a huge hype and popular all over the world, the manga would never have had such an impact on its own.

Yes, but the same could be said for 90% of literary works. People don't read anymore. There are tons of successful films without anyone knowing they're based on a book.

as they say anime adaptations are big advertisement for the source material anyway

so great entertaining ads will elevate the manga in this case

The art starts out, frankly, bad. But I would argue that about halfway through, it becomes great. and gets better and better. It's a slow and steady improvement. It remains inconsistent to the end, but at some point I found myself with an open mouth looking at some of those pages.

even the author said so, the manga is good but it has alot of flaws since its his first manga, with rough art in earlier volumes. the anime is just better honestly but i love the manga too.

No, I don't think so.
Why would a high-quality studio choose to pick up a mid manga?

If the manga is high-quality, it gets a high-quality studio.
