Scarlet... Would you use your "afterlife" as a second chance for life or a second chance for revenge. A very interest premise that kinda falls short unable to bring point A to point B and C. These are my random thoughts...

The animation is really good. The characters are really flat for the exception of Scarlet herself which is the only one that shows actual emotions but the movie kind of tries to put her development in a way too forced. (Bonfire scene).

The nurse guy is the weirdest co-lead, he doesn't has any development. Basically he just tells Scarlet to stop killing people.

The movie tries to touch many themes like: revenge is bad, forgive yourself, if you were born in a different time,, you choose what to do in your life.

The worst part is the ending...

I really can keep going with other weird things, like that afterlife is supposed to be timeless but for some reason only the japanese guy is from the future era (and the elderly people they met is the only different culture) and all the rest of the people are from Scarlet's world/era.

So, enjoyable movie but don't try to be deep about it.

Holy hell, it's a real treat to be able to witness Mamoru Hosoda's growth as a director and storyteller! After how lackluster "Belle" was, the bar that he had to clear wasn't very high, but I did not expect him to follow up his weakest film with what's possibly his strongest film to date! Granted, I'd have to sit on that more to be sure, but the fact that I'm even considering "Scarlet" to be his best film so far is a good sign to myself.

The trailer undersold me on this film. Based on what I saw, it seemed like this movie was about a princess in a fantasty land who was involved in a war, but the story turned out to be more interesting and original than that. The concept of a girl who is so focused on seeking vengeance that even after she fails to do so and dies, the revenge carries on with her in the literal afterlife is admittedly badass and not something I see very often. One thing I was wishing for this film was that the fantastical setting would be fully utilized and more developed than in "The Boy and the Beast" and it delivered on that. This afterlife is so familiar yet otherworldly. I'm glad I saw this in theaters because it made those sky creatures all the more larger than life in a way that struck fear and awe in me.

I like Scarlet and Hijiri as the warrior woman and healer man pairing. The last time I saw that was with Balsa and Tanda in "Seirei no Moribito" who I also really like, so it's great to get more of that because there's not a lot of it. I was reminded of "Mirai" with the character arc heavily relying on visual storytelling through metaphorical scenes. I liked it in "Mirai," but "Scarlet" did feel more impactful and I can see that Mamoru Hosoda is maturing. It makes me expect that his next film will be even more daring and abstract! "The Girl who Leapt Through Time" also crossed my mind towards the end and it makes me wonder if Hosoda was purposefully teasing us with a reference to that film. Similar to Makoto and Chiaki, I thought we were going to get another near-kiss that doesn't happen, but this film actually gave us a kiss. Makoto's promise to Chiaki is much more possible than what Scarlet promises Hijiri though... I could see this film losing some audiences with how almost naively idealistic the finale is, but the majority of the film is so strong that that strength continues to prop it up for me. Fans of "Vinland Saga" might find merit in this movie for similar themes.

Lastly, I kept my "Belle" slander to a minimum but have to add that the music in "Scarlet" is more memorable. On another note, the 3D animation that Mamoru Hosoda started to utilize in "Belle" got more polished with "Scarlet."

EDIT: Mana Ashida does a great job with her voice acting, too!
