Episode 1
To start things off, this show premieres with a double-length episode, and the animation style stands out, for better or worse. If not for the inferior animation quality, it looks as if Shaft animated this, but it's Deen who actually does it, using the style of animation for their horror shows that they are known for. There are a number of moments where the characters are faceless, which has some special meaning in it.
So it starts off with six girls being gathered to play a death game as they are struggling in life and playing death games is their only means of making ends meet. The girls gather around the table where the keys there are underneath a serving tray, and as this place is rigged with traps that the girls need to be careful. Kokuto ends up getting taken down by one of the traps. Next room the girls need to find a way to escape a flooding room and figure that they al need to pull the levers at the same time while wearing the handcuffs. That causes the rooms to separate and for guillotine blades to come down, but those keys not only unlocks the handcuffs but stop the blades. Unfortunately, the girls wasted too much time fighting over the keys against Yuki's words and Aoi is cut up by the blades. And then they get to the elevator but it can't carry all the girls and only goes down once. Trying to figure out how to lose one girl's weight, Kinko decides to stay behind. But Yuki realizes that even without Kinko the other three are over the weight limit and the girls cut off a leg to get under the limit. The girls reach the exit, but they haven't cleared all the obstacles all while the place is on fire. With Yuki being ruthless as opposed to the other girls, she sacrificed Kinko to make it out. So in the end, Yuki cleared the game with Beniya and Momono also making it to the end. It turns out that Yuki has played this game 28 times before and is hoping to clear 99 of them seeing that her life depends on it. Lots of drama here, and these games are quite brutal seeing that compassion can get these girls killed. That was intense there, and while it's fine for a first episode, I would like to see some more backstory moving forward and I wonder how things will play out as this show will feature a rotating cast of characters as Yuki is only there to play and win. |
